‘West Side Story’ Star Rachel Zegler Will Play Snow White in Disney’s Live-Action Remake

Disney has done it again: A Snow White live-action movie is coming to our screens. Here’s what we know so far about the film:

Rachel Zegler will play Snow White. The West Side Story actor shared the news to her personal Instagram account on June 22, writing “Well… hello to a dream come true. 🍎✨.”

The Amazing Spider-Man and 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb will helm the project. “Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence, and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale,” he said in a statement about Zegler’s casting, per Deadline.

The West Side Story movie, directed by Steven Spielberg hits theaters December 10. It stars Zegler as Maria, Ansel Elgort as Tony, and Ariana DeBose as Anita. Spielberg told Vanity Fair about his adaptation, “This story is not only a product of its time, but that time has returned, and it’s returned with a kind of social fury. I really wanted to tell that Puerto Rican, Nuyorican experience of basically the migration to this country and the struggle to make a living, and to have children, and to battle against the obstacles of xenophobia and racial prejudice.”

Disney execs were reportedly “blown away” by Zegler’s performance in the movie.

The movie will include original music. Songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who worked on La La Land, The Greatest Showman, and Dear Evan Hansen, will write new music for the film. O.G. songs like “Heigh-Ho,” “Someday My Prince Will Come,” and “Whistle While You Work” will also appear in the film.

Production will begin in 2022. Disney has yet to announce a release date or whether it will premiere on Disney+ or in theaters. Or both!

We’ll update this post with more details as they come in.
