Zoe Saldana Defended Britney Spears in 2014 the Way Everyone Should Have

The New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears is an eye-opening look at Britney Spears’s current legal situation but also a poignant analysis of how our media treated her in the 2000s. Zoe Saldana is someone who crossed paths with Spears at that time, co-starring in the singer’s 2002 movie Crossroads. Saldana appeared on Watch What Happens Live in 2014 and was asked about Spears—and she used this opportunity to call out the culture that, at one point, thought it was “cool” to diss the pop icon.
“I have a huge amount of respect for Britney Spears,” Saldana said. “I’ve always said this, and I always will continue to say it: She was the one big, big celebrity that I met when I was starting to work in Hollywood who literally was humble. Whatever was going on in her mind or in her world, it was never about hating her neighbor.”
Saldana continued, “She was the only pop star at that time—and I can name a lot of prominent figures right now, that today are more famous than Britney, that literally got to where they’re at by hating on Britney…because it was ‘cool’ at one time to really just diss her. Britney never did that. She had the biggest fanbase, and I do believe people and children gravitate toward good energy, and she’s definitely an abundance of that.”
This isn’t the only time she was asked about Spears on WWHL. Saldana welcomed twin boys in 2014, and she confirmed three years later Spears was the one who broke that news to the press.
“Literally the way that it happened was so innocent that I never even thought of holding her accountable to anything,” Saldana said. “We were on the same flight from L.A. to New York, and we just talked for the duration of the flight. She has two boys, I was having twins; we had such a beautiful talk. And I forgot, it never even occurred to me to tell her not to say anything. We weren’t trying to hide it; we were just trying to be discreet. And then when she disclosed it, she was just being Britney. I love her. I don’t mean that in a negative way. I mean that in the way that she lives her life in such truth.”
Two queens.
