The 1st Trailer for ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Is Here, and Fans Are Excited

The first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie starring a primarily Asian cast is happening: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In the film, Simu Liu plays Shang-Chi, “Master of Kung Fu,” alongside Awkwafina and Michelle Yeoh in undisclosed roles.

The first teaser trailer was released on Monday, April 19, and fans were immediately excited to see this character hit the big screen.

Many are excited about the potential for amazing fight sequences. We’ve seen, frankly, enough of robots fighting holes in the sky or aliens knocking over buildings while someone uses their laser vision or whatever. This looks more hand-to-hand, using basic weapons like sticks and swords, which could make room for some really cool choreography.

Others, meanwhile, are ready for great new characters.

But no one had a better reaction to the trailer than Simu Liu himself. Marvel surprise-dropped it alongside a new character poster on Liu’s birthday, and the actor could not contain his excitement, tweeting, “GHUUFXDTGVXDFGHVCDDTGHUIKKBVCDSTYGHJHGGHHJBVGGFYFYGUBIH THIS IS THE BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Let’s take a closer look at this trailer, shall we? It looks like young Shang-Chi trains as a fighter and eventually moves to San Francisco, where he parks cars and makes friends with Awkwafina. See, below, when he gets into an altercation on the 1 California bus as it passes Ghirardelli Square.

Back to Shang-Chi. He gets glowy bracelets, fights a white guy, heads back to his home country to meet up with his dad; there are glow swords, a man in a mask, a woman with a blunt bob, and most importantly, a lion! Yes, always be on the same team as a lion!

Still no hint as to what the 10 rings are for, but we are so down for this movie.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hits theaters September 3.
