Olivia Rodrigo Plays a Terrifying Cheerleader in Her New Video, and Fans Are Obsessed

The breakup banger of the summer has arrived, y’all, and it’s “good 4 u” by Olivia Rodrigo. The “drivers license” singer just released the third single off her upcoming debut album, Sour, and it’s a prickly pop anthem sure to resonate with anyone whose ex moved on a little too quickly.
In the video, Rodrigo plays a pouty cheerleader having a very bad day. Sick of pretending to be happy in the wake of a split, she puts on latex gloves and picks up a jug of gasoline (plus a snack for the road!) and sets her bedroom ablaze so she can stop crying on the floor. Then, she takes off into the woods and escapes via lake, her eyes glowing demonic red, in a moment reminiscent of Jennifer’s Body. The video is directed by Petra Collins, the cool-girl actor/photographer who will soon helm her first feature film, Spiral, starring Selena Gomez.
Some of the lyrics in “good 4 u” are honestly pretty biting, like the lines “And good for you, I guess that you’ve been workin’ on yourself, I guess that therapist I found for you, she really helped, Now you can be a better man for your brand new girl.” Ouch, Liv!
Fans online are honestly psyched the teen star delivered something upbeat—not that her first, moodier offerings were bad, but sometimes we wanna head-bang, you know? The track is drawing comparisons to early Paramore-esque, punk-infused anthems with scream-along choruses.
One fan compared the song to Rodrigo‘s major inspiration, Taylor Swift, contrasting lines from the two artists’ songs: “when Olivia Rodrigo said ‘Good for you, you’re doing great out there without me, baby, God, I wish that I could do that’ and Taylor Swift said ‘It takes everything in me just to get up each day, but it’s wonderful to see that you’re okay.’”
Rodrigo is set to be the musical guest on the next episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Keegan-Michael Key. We can only hope she gives us a taste of “good 4 u” live…but leaves the flames at home.
