Meghan Markle Just Wore a Rare Bold Lip—And We Love It

Meghan Markle made a surprise appearance December 13 on CNN Heroes, the annual special that honors those who have made great contributions to society during the year.

It was her first public appearance since revealing in a New York Times op-ed that she had suffered a miscarriage earlier this summer. The Duchess of Sussex spoke about the everyday heroes across America this year who helped their neighbors during the coronavirus pandemic.

“In a year that has been universally challenging for everyone, I’m inspired by the stories of compassion in our communities. Across the country, people have put their own needs aside to come together and support the collective well-being of those around them,” she said.

“We saw the good in people, in our neighbors, and in entire communities coming together to say they would not stand by while our neighbors went hungry,” she continued.

And while her words were certainly the point of the appearance, we couldn’t help but notice Markle’s gorgeous makeup as well. While she’s typically a fan of more neutral tones, especially when it comes to lipstick, she opted for a bolder lip this time around with a berry shade. Just look at how beautifully the flowers in the background accent her choices:

Back in 2018, Markle’s makeup artist, Daniel Martin, explained why she sometimes avoids a bolder lip. “The one time she did a red lip, she just didn’t feel comfortable in it,” he told Glamour. “She likes to talk and she’s not a fussy person, so she doesn’t want to have to worry about anything.”

The neutral and earthy tones look amazing, of course, but we love to see this turn toward berry shades. While we wait to see if any of the products Markle actually used are leaked, here are a few of our current favorites:
