Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton Reconciling Is Reportedly Just ‘Wishful Thinking’

Despite hopes they might patch things up, it sounds like a Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle reconciliation isn’t in the cards yet, according to Omid Scobie, co-author of Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of A Modern Royal Family. Following tensions in Buckingham Palace, the duchesses’ relationship has been more newsworthy than ever. And now,  Scobie is giving us updates.

“I think it’s wishful thinking when we see people say that Meghan and Kate are going to work on a Netflix project together or they’re talking on the phone,” Scobie tells Entertainment Tonight. “I even read a story about how they’re Zooming whilst making cakes or something, quite recently.”

With Meghan Markle and Prince Harry living in California and Middleton and Prince William living in the U.K., the Sussexes and the Cambridges are more distanced than ever, says Scobie. He doesn’t think the distance is based on any bad blood between the duchesses, however. He chalks it up to the hierarchy difference between Prince Harry and Prince William, calling the four of them a “Diana Ross and the Supremes situation.”

“[Harry and Meghan] wanted to do just as much as the Cambridges,” Scobie tells ET. “They wanted to be just as front and center as William and Kate were and, of course, public appetite was there for it, but the institution is very quick to remind you that you are in that position. Harry is number six in line to the throne and must always remember that as he carries out that work. It means that he can never overshadow his brother.”

Still, there seems to be a mutual level of respect shared by the duchesses, and a desire on Markle’s part to keep the peace. “If you love me, you don’t have to hate her,” Markle said in her viral March Oprah Winfrey interview. “And if you love her, you don’t have to hate me.”
