Lorde Wore Her Hair Around Her Neck Like a Scarf

Lorde just invented a strange but creative way to keep her neck warm: wearing her hair around it. Yes, you read that right; this is a thing that really happened.

On Wednesday night, November 17, Lorde attended the 2021 Guggenheim International Gala in New York City, where she also performed. It was a chilly night, but she wore a strapless burnt orange belted gown with a pleated skirt.

Lorde paired the fall-foliage-colored gown with silver drop earrings and rings. For makeup, she wore orange eye shadow to complement the dress and a glossy, natural pink lip, which together accentuates her iconic and dramatic brows.

The hair is where things get very, very interesting: Instead of wearing it in any particular style, Lorde decided to wrap it around her neck as one would a scarf on a chilly winter night.

Lorde eventually released her neck from its hair prison and changed into a gold suit with a fitted blazer and extremely wide-leg pants for her performance. She wore her hair in braided pigtails with matching bows.

Other attendees of the event who got to witness Lorde’s hair scarf in person included Jurnee Smollett, Maya Hawke, Glen Powell, and Kat Graham.

Lorde has always been up for experimentation in her music, hair, and wardrobe. In the music video for her song “Mood Ring,” she wore a wavy blonde wig that made her look like Anya Taylor-Joy. “I sort of underwent something of a transformation for this video because the song is satirical,” she said during a livestream, per Page Six. “I was writing from the perspective of a character who is not me, although I have at times shared some of her traits. She’s very cool, I love her vibes.”
