Zendaya Wore a Metal Spine Dress—And Fans Are Noticing a Spider-Man Influence

The press tour for Spider-Man: No Way Home has begun, and of course that means new Zendaya looks will be blessing our feeds.

On Monday, November 30, the fashion icon appeared at the Ballon D’Or photo call in Paris, sporting yet another iconic dress. This Roberto Cavalli ensemble was an open-back black dress with elbow-length sleeves. From the front, it’s a simple yet sleek LBD. But the pièce de résistance is only visible when Zendaya turns around.

A metal spine runs along the back of her dress, re-edited from a 2000 collection by Fausto Puglisi. The golden cage is linked by micro chains and runs along her back as though it were carved to match her vertebrae. It’s reminiscent of the internet-breaking Balmain gown she wore for her Dune tour, which was sculpted to match her bust. She’s also no stranger to metal chains in her press tour outfits.

The outfit didn’t need much more adorning. To allow the spine to take the focus, she accessorized with matching large gold hoops and drew her hair back into an effortless bun.

Eagle-eyed Spider-Man fans spotted her outfit’s likeness to a favorite universe villain. The metal spine is similar to that of Dr. Otto Octavius, also known as “Doc Ock.” The villain has four metal limbs attached to his back. Rather than for style, he uses these mechanical arms to move around and attack. When a fan pointed out the resemblance on Instagram, Zendaya reposted the comparison on her Instagram Story, writing, “We love a reference.”

Alfred Molina will be reprising his role as Doc Ock in Zendaya’s upcoming film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, premiering in theaters on December 17. Perhaps he and Zendaya’s character, MJ, can swap style tips!

Zendaya has been booked and busy with Dune and now Spider-Man promo appearances. Hopefully this press tour (and the upcoming Euphoria season two premiere) will keep us blessed with stunning red carpet looks.
