Tiffany Haddish Says She Turned Down Boyfriend Common at First Because She Knew His Exes

Even if everyone’s on good terms, it can be weird to date an acquaintance’s ex. And when everyone involved is famous, it’s doubly awkward. Which is why comedy superstar Tiffany Haddish was, let’s say, wary of getting involved with boyfriend Common when he first asked her out.

“I was waiting for you, Steve!” she joked on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. No, but really, she did turn Common down the first couple of times he asked her out. “He was, like, tryna holler, and I was like…‘Um…no, I’m not really interested. I’m good. My eyes are set on other things. I’m interested in somebody else. I’m sorry. But you seem like a nice person.’”

She went on to explain that part of her hesitancy stemmed from their overlapping circles. “‘I know too many people that dated you, let’s be honest,’” she said. “I didn’t say that, though. You know. You know.” Ahem, Erykah Badu. Cough-cough, Taraji P. Henson. Clears throat, Serena Williams.

But obviously, minds were changed, and the two are now in a steady relationship. In fact, they made a “Silhouette Challenge” video so steamy, Colbert couldn’t show the full thing on CBS.  Haddish said it was “a negotiation” to get Common to participate, but once he was in, he was in all the way. They ended up doing over a dozen takes because he wanted to get it right!

As for their current relationship status? Haddish said, “He’s not my boyfriend, he is my man. I don’t date boys no more.” Words to live by. Tattoo it on my forehead. Tiffany Haddish, teach me your ways.

“This is hands-down the best relationship I’ve ever been in,” Haddish revealed on Steve-O’s podcast, Steve-O’s Wild Ride, in August 2020. “I’m just way happier, and it’s like knowing I got somebody that cares about me, that really has my back. It seems like he does, anyways. And I love it. I love him.”
