To just take accountability for it.” “I would’ve never wanted that to come out about her,” Markle continued. “Ever. Even thought it had happened. I protected that from ever being out in the world.” 

Markle says a few days before the wedding, Middleton was upset about flower girl dresses, and it made Markle. “It really hurt my feelings,” Markle said. “I thought in the context of everything that was going on in those days leading to the wedding that it didn’t make sense to not just be doing what everyone else was doing, which was being supportive knowing what was going on with my dad and whatnot.”

Markle says she’s forgiven Middleton and has moved on, but “What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn’t do, but that happened to me. And the people who were a part of our wedding going to our comms team and saying, ‘I know this didn’t happen.’”

On the conversation about Meghan being “different”: 

“Well, I thought about it because they made me think about it,” she says of the media coverage. Now, upon reflection, she’s happy all of those things were true. “Thank God I had those life experiences…I’ve always worked, I’ve always valued independence. I’ve always advocated for women’s rights.” The sad irony, she added, is that she’s always advocated for women but spent the last four years being silenced.
