The Bee in ‘Bridgerton’ Has a Secret Meaning

The Bridgerton bee—and its meaning—has fans buzzing.

Yes, we’re talking about the literal insect that makes an appearance several times on the hit Netflix series. (Warning: Spoilers ahead.) You see the bumblebee for the first time when it lands on Daphne and Simon’s carriage as they leave for their honeymoon. Then, we see it again during the season’s final scene, as Daphne gives birth to her first child with Simon. As Simon holds his newborn son, the camera pans over to the bedroom window—it’s a home birth, given the time period—and, yup, the bee’s there. Now, fans are salivating to know if this Bridgerton bee has special meaning.

The common theory is that the bee hints at a second season focused on Anthony Bridgerton. As you may know, Bridgerton is based on a series of romance novels by Julia Quinn, each one focusing on a different Bridgerton sibling. In the show’s first season, multiple siblings get concurrent storylines, though Daphne’s is clearly the main one and follows the plot of the book, The Duke and I. Future seasons, though, would lean more heavily on other characters including Daphne’s older brother, Anthony. According to Good Housekeeping, bees have an emotional meaning for Anthony: An allergic reaction to a bee sting is what killed his father. This is what led him to take the Viscount title and—spoiler!—marry his wife, Kate. In the book about their romance, The Viscount Who Loved Me, bees appear in many scenes; at one point, Kate is stung in a garden.

One viewer wrote on Twitter, “I am so looking forward to #Bridgerton. Season 2 with Anthony, Kate, and the little bee scene in the garden.” Meanwhile, other fans are creating funny memes to show their excitement for the Bridgeton bee.

“I was stung by a bee yet I was happy cuz I feel like it’s a sign for @bridgerton season 2 lol,” one fan tweeted.

Another added, “I’m loving all the bee references everywhere in #Bridgerton! Even the wisteria which is apparently a very attractive plant for bees! I need Kate and Anthony now!”

It’s extremely likely Bridgerton will be renewed for a second season. On January 4, Netflix tweeted, “In their first four weeks, it’s projected that 63 million households will have courted Shondaland’s Bridgerton and 44 million households will have suited up for Robert Rodriguez’s We Can Be Heroes, making this our biggest viewing week between Christmas and New Year’s ever!” Bridgerton is now Netflix’s fifth-largest original series premiere ever, according to TV Line.

Phoebe Dynevor, who plays Daphne, told Elle about a possible second season, “If the seasons are sticking to the books, then it’s Anthony’s turn to find love, so we’re passing on the baton, in that respect. I want to see Daphne get involved in Anthony’s love life a bit, as he sort of meddled with hers quite a lot. I think that will be fun.”

We’ll just have to wait and see.
