That Big ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Death Has Fans Spinning

It wouldn’t be Grey’s Anatomy if the show didn’t routinely, cruelly, mercilessly kill off our favorite characters on a regular basis. But even so, last night’s death was a true shocker that has fans reeling. Warning: Spoilers ahead for the March 11 episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19.

When last we saw our Station 19 firefighters and Mercy Seattle Sloan Grace Whatever The Hospital Is Called Now doctors, they were battling the current pandemic, which was heavy enough. But on the Thursday, March 11 crossover episode, Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) set himself the additional task of tracking kidnapper Opal…and though he succeeded in helping get the criminal mastermind arrested, he was also stabbed along the way, and later died of his injuries.

DeLuca joins the club not just of departed Grey’s docs but of Meredith love interests who were victims of tragedy. Seriously, this woman has the worst luck.

Gianniotti told Deadline about his character’s death, “We got together quickly, working on exactly what it would look like and what episode, when it would be, but I said ‘absolutely.’ I’ve been on the show for six years, seven seasons. It’s definitely been a long time, and I’m a young guy. So, I think this was a good time to depart, and I’m happy that Krista [Vernoff] and Debbie [Allen] and all the writers did such a great job with telling the story. I think it’s going to do justice to a lot of people and help a lot of people.”

Fans are mourning his passing. “YOU MEAN TO TELL ME DELUCA DIED FROM A STAB WOUND AND OWEN AND TEDDY WHO ARE REALLY GOOD AT WHAT THEY DO COUOD NOT SAVE HIM MAKE IT MAKE SENSE,” cried one user unto the television heavens.

Another summarized what basically all fans are thinking: “Andrew Deluca went from being a character I pretty much ignored to one of my top 2 favs and now he’s gone…I’m absolutely heart broken.”

Let it out, kids. Let the feelings out.

Counting down the days til that re-appearance!
