Selena Gomez Just Got a Mysterious Large Back Tattoo

Selena Gomez just debuted a large tattoo on her upper back…we’re pretty sure. 

Celebrity tattoo artist Bang Bang, who has inked Gomez before, posted to Instagram a grainy black-and-white snap of a woman with dark hair who has a delicate, asymmetrical tattoo design between her shoulder blades. In the caption, he wrote, “@selenagomez ✍️.” The post, which went up on Wednesday, December 15, was also shared to his Stories, where he tagged Gomez. And the woman in the picture certainly looks like her, insofar as you can look like someone from the back. Check out the picture here and decide for yourself.

Now, assuming that this is Sel in the picture, we would love to know what the design is! In the past the Rare Beauty founder’s ink has always had a specific meaning attached to it. She and Julia Michaels once got matching arrow tattoos at London’s The Black Lantern studio, and Gomez has also gotten matching tattoos with her BFFs (a number four) and the cast of 13 Reasons Why (a semicolon). In November 2019, she debuted a thigh tattoo that depicts two hands pressed together in prayer and a rosary, a reference to her Catholic faith. That ink was supplied by Bang Bang too.

In January 2020 she got tatted by Bang Bang again: the word rare in delicate script on her neck, just below her jawbone, a reference to her beauty brand and her album of the same name. On her arm is the date of her kidney transplant, which the singer confirmed in 2019 was a matching tat with her good friend Francia Raisa (who served as the donor for her surgery).

All of which is just making us more curious about the new design! Does it have to do with the pandemic, her show Only Murders in the Building, or some other significant occasion or achievement in her life? She was just nominated for her first Grammy, so maybe it’s about that? Selena Gomez, give us a hint!
