What’s your go-to getting ready music?
It changes daily. One day it could be Dua Lipa, the next Hamilton, or Rent, or Tik, Tik…Boom!, or any musical in general. It could be Thoroughly Modern Millie! It really just depends on my mood.
How do you like to take a moment for yourself?
By making sure I have a good skin care regimen every day. Skincare maybe isn’t the ultimate act of self love, but I do think it’s a major act of love for yourself. You are literally putting moisture into your body by moisturizing your face. I think that when you set that time aside, be it two minutes or 20 minutes, it’s a way to focus on yourself and your body. You get to be alone with your thoughts and think things over, or say your gratitudes to yourself in the mirror.
Who are the women inspiring you the most right now?
Stacey Abrams, Kamala Harris, and RBG will always inspire me forever and always. Women like my mother, who during quarantine has been making masks nonstop and has a portion of the proceeds go to the Actors Fund and other causes like the Biden/Harris campaign. She’s taken a time where she can’t leave her apartment in New York and is putting it towards not only protecting people with masks that she’s making by hand, but donating money to really, truly amazing causes.
People in the arts community and live stage, they have been impacted so greatly—think about every chorus dancer, every stage manager, these wonderful people who are always coming together to bring happiness and joy and thought-provoking art to the public. They’re home, and they’re out of jobs, too. I think people forget about that. They see actors on TV, but they don’t think about the ones on stage.
You’re stranded on a deserted island with only three products. What are they?
Oh my gosh! Definitely the Collagen Peptide moisturizer. We don’t really know the climate of this island. Is it humid? Is it dry? No matter what, I’m assuming I need a moisturizer. Another one would be one of those cooling face masks. I’m not even thinking about my favorite products right now, I’m just thinking practically! And I would probably say the Olay Regenerist Retinol24 night serum, just to have that amazing dewy bright skin on the beach.
If you could change one thing about beauty perceptions, what would it be?
That just because you’re an aging woman doesn’t mean you have to play a mom or a grandma. A lot of the time in film and television, you get these gorgeous, gorgeous women, and they remain gorgeous their whole lives, but then they get pigeonholed into these frumpy characters or women who don’t have their life together. Meanwhile as men age, the women playing their lovers or wives are 25 years old. It doesn’t really matter for them. They’re still playing these amazing characters. I know that it’s changing, but that’s something that’s bothered me my whole life.
