Samantha Jones Just Made a Very Subtle Appearance in the ‘Sex and the City’ Reboot

Warning: Spoilers for And Just Like That… episode five, ahead.

Yes, the Sex and the City revival went forward despite the fact that it’s missing Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), the absolutely iconic promiscuous, brutally honest, and incredibly loyal character responsible for some of the series’ most groundbreaking, funny, and memorable moments. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t missed by the rest of the characters.

Although Samantha Jones is not physically present in the series, And Just Like That just can’t seem to forget her.  In the first episode, Samantha’s absence is explained: she moved to London and is estranged from her friends Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte (Kristin Davis), and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon). In the latest episode, which dropped on HBO Max on Thursday, December 30, the show allowed Samantha to make a very subtle appearance…sort of.

In the episode, Carrie has hip surgery and records an episode of her podcast while in recovery. Being in recovery from major surgery, Carrie is on pain medication that makes her, well, a little more like her old pal Samantha Jones, and she tells ends up telling a brutally honest and graphic story about the time Samatha Jones helped her remove a diaphragm from her vagina. For those new fans, you can actually watch this play out in season two of Sex and the City.

“You cannot say boundaries and girlfriends in the same sentence,” Carrie says in the episode. “My girlfriends are always there for me no matter what. They are there for me. In fact, you know what? I remember this time that my friend Samantha Jones even pulled my diaphragm out with her bare hand because it got stuck. It was really stuck — like she was up in there for like a minute.”

Charlotte, who looked after Carrie during her recovery, tells the former sex columnist that she should probably let Samantha know that she used her full name for the story on the podcast before its released. Carrie is resistant at first but gives in and reaches out to Samantha.

“Hi. Long story short I wanted to let you know, I mentioned that you pulled out my diaphragm on a podcast,” Carrie wrote.

“One of my finest hours,” Samantha replied.

When Carrie added, “hope that’s okay,” Samantha said the most Samantha thing Samantha could possibly say: “Of course. I love that your vagina is getting air time.”

Carrie then said “I miss you,” but was heartbroken when Samantha started typing, but ultimately never returned a response. Please come back, Samantha!

You can stream And Just Like That on HBO Max. New episodes drop every Thursday.
