Pro Surfer Carissa Moore Drops Her Skin-Care Routine

Pro surfer Carissa Moore has a lot to prepare for. For the first time, surfing will be a part of the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, and Moore will be competing for Team USA. Now 28, she started surfing when she was only five years old and became the youngest athlete to win the Surfing Wold Championship at 18. Since then she’s won three more times.

While her training routine is as intense as it gets, when it comes to her skin, she tends to keep things simple. “I’m definitely more on the minimalist side,” she tells Glamour. “I think with my lifestyle and how fluid it is, I’m very low-maintenance.” However, that doesn’t mean she has no routine in place at all. “Recently I’ve definitely gotten more aware of my skin and taking better care of it, because I’m in the sun and salt so much I just see the effects of it.”

She tends to pay a little more attention to the skin on her body, both because of her profession and as a means of self-care. That’s why she’s partnered with Gillette Venus as part of the brand’s Worthy of My Skin Campaign. “It was really fun to be a part of their campaign that really empowers women to feel confident in their own skin,” she says. “It’s something that I feel very connected to, because I’ve struggled with my own self-confidence at times. I feel like it’s a very relatable topic and something that we’re all going through.”

Another topic close to Moore’s heart is ocean conversation, which is the second part of the partnership. In addition to spreading the message of self-love, Moore and Venus are asking her fans to sign the WeAreOneOcean.com 30X30 petition, which calls for protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030.

We caught up with Moore ahead of the Olympics to talk about her skin-care essentials for Glamour’s Drop the Routine. Read on for the SPF she swears by, the zit cream that works overnight, and the body lotion she can’t live without.

My cleanser

Origins has the Checks and Balances face wash, which is really nice. It’s frothy and is just really kind to your skin.

My moisturizer

I think the biggest thing with my skin is hydration and moisturizing, because it just dries out. But I’m always scared to use too much product, so I just stick with stuff that doesn’t irritate it or make me break out or is too heavy. I love Origins; I use the GinZing moisturizer at night.

My SPF

Because I’m in the sun and the salt so much, see the effects of it—I started to see a couple more freckles and dark spots. Luckily I have some Hawaiian in me so that helps.

I love Sun Bum; they have some great products. I love their face SPF 70. Their new product is a face mist, and I really like it just for everyday when you’re going out. Normally I don’t put anything on my face, but just a little squirt of this, and it smells good. Sunscreen for me is super important because I’m in the sun and saltwater all the time.

My eye cream

Nothing crazy, but I did buy some nice hydrating eye cream from Trader Joe’s. Their skin-care is nice.

My spot treatment

For those spots, like little zits that pop up and I want them gone by the morning, Origins has a great spot remover

My body lotion

My favorite lotion is Fresh. It dries really nice. The hardest part for me about hydrating my skin is that a lot of the time when I wake up the next morning and then go for a surf, I’m super slippery. But I like that this one sinks really nicely into the skin, and it dries quick so you don’t feel sticky going into your sheets at night.

My deodorant

I do really love this Kopari deodorant. I usually hate all the other deodorants, but this one just feels like natural and nice and really smooth.

My razor

I know it sounds cliché, but shaving my legs does make me feel really confident. It’s a little extra time in the shower and a little bit more love on myself—Venus has definitely helped me to up my self-love routine.
