Liz Hernandez’s skin-care routine boils down to a simple philosophy: Be nice to your skin—like, literally. “For me, a big part of skin-care isn’t just about what I’m putting on my skin,” Hernandez tells Glamour. “It’s also my self-talk—what I’m telling myself about my skin.”

It shouldn’t exactly come as a surprise that the founder of Wordaful—which produces videos and live events aimed at helping people communicate better with others and themselves—would believe that speaking kindly to your skin can yield the most beautiful results.

“I think people forget that our self-talk narrates our entire day,” Hernandez says. “What are your first few thoughts when you look in the mirror? We need to be mindful of that, because it doesn’t matter what you’re applying on the outside if your thoughts are not healthy on the inside.”

But what she puts on the outside also matters: Hernandez believes that the best products have the fewest and most-natural ingredients. “I’m all about using the most-natural products that I can find,” she explains. “It’s almost like, if I can’t eat it, then why am I going to put it on my skin?”

Because Hernandez struggles with hyperpigmentation, she recently allowed one chemical into her skincare regimen: a retinol, which she pairs with copious amounts of sunscreen. “I have to be mindful of when I’m in the sun because my skin just absorbs the sunlight,” she says. “When I was younger, it was awesome. Now I see what the downfall [was] in not reapplying my SPF.”

In fact, Hernandez reapplies one of her favorite sunscreens every three hours. “I even wear SPF when I’m in the house,” she laughs. “To me, it’s as vital as brushing my teeth.”

What sunscreen is so wonderful that you won’t mind reapplying every few hours? Read on to find out—plus, a bevy of other natural skin-care products—as Hernandez drops her routine.

My Cleanser

Gentle Cycle Milky Cleanser from Versed is vegan and cruelty- and fragrance-free. It smells really good. And you can just feel how gentle it is on your skin. I’m using Retin-A right now, so my skin tends to be a little bit more sensitive, and this just feels dreamy. I usually don’t talk about cleanser this way—but I just absolutely love this one.

My Toner

Weekend Glow by Versed helps balance my skin and also lightens the hyperpigmentation.

My Eye Cream

I just use a vitamin E around my eyes. I like that it’s just natural vitamin E. I want to make sure that I’m putting on the most natural ingredient possible around my eyes.

My Masks

I haven’t used a mask in a while, but when I do, I’ll use a Bliss face mask or eye mask. My favorite thing to do is put them in the freezer, and then when it’s time to use it, I pull one out and let it defrost for 10 minutes. It’s super-cold, and it helps with any kind of inflammation if you have puffy eyes. Every face mask I own is in the freezer.

My Retinol

I just got introduced to this serum. I put it all over my face at night. The retinol actually smells really nice; it has a really soft scent to it. I’ve only been doing it for about a month or so, but I’ve noticed the texture of my skin is getting better. It just sounds just like a commercial, but literally all my friends are like, ‘Oh my god, your skin is glowing!’ And I think that’s because of the skin-cell turnover.

My Face Oil

It’s called Berry Beautiful, and it’s just organic red raspberry seed oil. This is my go-to every single day. I wear it under my makeup, before I put on my SPF. It moisturizes my skin but doesn’t leave it feeling greasy. I think the thing that we were taught growing up was if you have oily skin, you can’t add oil. But it actually balances you out.

My Sunscreens

I’m using two right now. I really like Bliss Block Star. The other one, from Skinceuticals, has SPF 50 and has a little bit of tint. It’s so important to have an SPF that I love because I want to feel good when I’m reapplying it. I want to know that it only has a few ingredients and I’m not constantly reapplying chemicals to my face.

My Lip Balms

I’ve always been a big fan of Burt’s Bees. But there is one I was sent from the company Wldkat, and it’s so good. It smells really good, and it actually moisturizes really well. Like, really, really well.

My Tool

I’ll usually put on my raspberry oil and then just do these little motions around my eyebrows and my hairline with this gua sha tool. And then I pull it behind my ears, and it helps to remove any kind of toxins I have in my skin. It’s almost like a meditative thing that I do. I’ll walk around the house at night like when I’m wrapping up my day, and it just feels really nice.
