Kristen Stewart Wears Princess Diana’s Iconic Engagement Ring in New Photo From ‘Spencer’

A new photo of Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in her upcoming biopic has been released—and it’s definitely her most iconic look yet.

Spencer, the title of the film as well as Princess Diana’s maiden name, “focuses on one weekend in the life of Princess Diana, as she spends the Christmas holiday with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, and decides to leave her marriage to Prince Charles.” On March 25, film distribution company Neon released the image of Stewart wearing the late Princess of Wales’ 12-carat sapphire engagement ring.

The ring featured in the promotional image is a stunning copy of the ring Princess Diana famously chose for herself after Prince Charles proposed without a ring in 1981. The princess was reportedly inspired by the Garrard sapphire and diamond brooch designed for Queen Victoria in 1840. “She found she loved it so much that she decided to wear it on her wedding day as her something blue on the front of her dress,” Garrard creative director Sara Prentice once told Vogue.

Princess Diana’s magnificent ring was later used by her son, Prince William, to propose to Kate Middleton in 2010.

But how does Stewart compare to Diana? Here is a side-by-side to get a better look. (Even the pearl earrings are a perfect match!)

While these two images perfectly show off the ring, the outfit worn by Kristen Stewart in the Spencer photo better resembles an ensemble worn by Princess Diana on January 23, 1989 on a visit to Portsmouth, United Kingdom:

The film itself is set nearly one year later. “December 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’s marriage has long since grown cold,” a detailed description of the movie reads. “Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting, and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.”

Spencer is tentatively set to be released in fall 2021—and it can’t come soon enough.
