Kristen Stewart Says She Has One Regret About Playing Princess Diana

Kristen Stewart will play Princess Diana in the upcoming biopic Spencer, due in theaters November 5. And in a new interview with The Daily Mail, the actor opens up about the role—specifically, the one regret she has about it.

Stewart tells the outlet because she’s not a mother yet, she felt “disloyal” playing one in Spencer

“I’m not a mum yet,” she said, later adding, “I need that to feel authentic…. It’s the one part of playing her that I felt disloyal about.”

Of course, this isn’t stopping critics from raving over Stewart’s performance. “There is no actress alive today who can hold a close-up like Kristen Stewart,” The Daily Beast wrote in its review. “As the camera homes in, you feel her defenses intensify; it feels, more than anything, like a violation. And it’s why she’s perfectly suited for the role of Princess Diana, the tortured royal felled by a voyeuristic tabloid press.”

And The New York Times published, “If you’re wondering how a star like Stewart fits into a British drawing-room drama, the answer is that she’s not really supposed to: Diana doesn’t, after all. The princess goes to great lengths to avoid the rest of the royal family, but Stewart as Diana thrives in those encounters, when the contrast between her and the stiff-lipped British cast becomes so palpable that she’s reduced to a trembling mess.”

Here is the official synopsis of Spencer, which takes place over a weekend in 1991: “December 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’s marriage has long since grown cold. Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting, and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.” I cannot wait to see this.
