Kristen Stewart Revealed Robert Pattinson’s ‘Twilight’ Audition Included a Make-Out Session

Kristen Stewart just revealed even more details about how Robert Pattinson was cast as Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise.
In a new profile by The New Yorker, writer Emily Witt reported that director Catherine Hardwicke had the actors vying for the role come to her Los Angeles home to read lines with Stewart, who had already been cast as Bella Swan. But they weren’t just testing their chemistry by reciting dialogue. According to Witt, the actors were also tasked with making out with Stewart.
“It was so clear who worked,” Stewart told Witt before mimicking a swoon. The Spencer star, who ended up dating Pattinson for four years, added that he had an “intellectual approach” to the role “that was combined with ‘I don’t give a fuck about this, but I’m going to make this sing.’”
This seems to be part of the reason Stewart felt connected to her costar. “And I was, like, ‘Ugh, same,’” she said. “And, whatever, we were young and stupid and, not to say that we made it so much better, but that’s what it needed, and that’s what anybody playing those parts needed to feel.”
Kristen Stewart first shared that she “basically cast” Pattinson back in September 2020. “We did one day of auditions and a bunch of guys came in,” Stewart told Vanity Fair at the time. “Catherine Hardwicke, the director, afterward was like, ‘What do you think? This is such a hard choice.’ I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?! It’s such an obvious choice!’ It couldn’t have been better. It was sort of perfect.”
Meanwhile, Pattinson told W magazine in 2017 that he took a Xanax before his Twilight audition. “I flew out to L.A. to actually audition for something else, which I was told was mine to take, just on a plate,” Pattinson shared. “And I went in and completely ruined the audition. And then the next day was the Twilight audition. And I think I was at such a kind of nothing-to-lose state, it was quite easy for me to do.”
Although the pair dated throughout the four-part film saga, they split in 2013. Still, all’s well that ends well. Stewart recently got engaged to screenwriter Dylan Meyer. “We’re marrying, we’re totally gonna do it,” Stewart said on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show earlier this month, per E! Online. “I wanted to be proposed to, so I think I very distinctly carved out what I wanted and she nailed it. We’re marrying; it’s happening.”
Pattinson has been dating model Suki Waterhouse since 2018.
