Justin Bieber is not the same man he was three years ago when he married Hailey Baldwin. The “Peaches” singer says his wife has helped him become a better person but notes their relationship hasn’t been without its difficulties.
“The first year of marriage was really tough,” he says in a new interview with GQ, adding, “because there was a lot, going back to the trauma stuff. There was just lack of trust. There was all these things that you don’t want to admit to the person that you’re with, because it’s scary. You don’t want to scare them off by saying, ‘I’m scared.’”
The couple got engaged in July 2018 and were married at a New York City courthouse in September 2018. One year later they had a bigger ceremony with friends and family in South Carolina.
In the GQ article, Bieber reveals he spent his first year of marriage to Hailey “on eggshells.” However, he says they’re in a better place now. “We’re just creating these moments for us as a couple, as a family, that we’re building these memories,” he says. “And it’s beautiful that we have that to look forward to. Before, I didn’t have that to look forward to in my life. My home life was unstable. Like, my home life was not existing. I didn’t have a significant other. I didn’t have someone to love. I didn’t have someone to pour into. But now I have that.”
As for their future together, kids are definitely part of the plan. “I just felt like that was my calling,” he says. “Just to get married and have babies and do that whole thing.” That being said, he says the “babies” will happen “not this second” but “eventually.”
