Everything We Know So Far About a Potential ‘Squid Game’ Season 2

Whether or not you’ve gotten a chance to watch it yet, you have definitely heard of Netflix’s Squid Game by now. The hit Korean drama series—about a group of cash-strapped players who agree to participate in games with extremely high stakes—has taken off faster than…well, almost anything the streaming service has dropped before.

The dystopian thriller series dropped on Netflix on September 17; in the weeks since, it has built a massive and devoted following. According to data from Vulture, Squid Game became the number one most streamed show in 90 countries. When you consider how many people are on Netflix, the number of Squid Game fans are staggering.

In fact, Squid Game‘s popularity could fast-track the series to become one of the most popular Netflix shows of all time. This path is similar to the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, which dropped on the service in 2016 quietly but built its fanbase via word of mouth in the weeks following its release. Stranger Things became a cultural phenomenon, and it looks like Squid Game is already well on its way to become one too.

And due to its massive and sudden success, a season two seems inevitable. Here’s everything we know about a potential season two of Netflix’s Squid Game.

Will there be a season two? We’re not sure…yet. Nothing has been confirmed as of press time, but Netflix historically is quick to give a green light on popular shows.

Also, the series’ writer and director has some ideas. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the writer and director of Squid Game, told The Times of London in a recent interview that he has some ideas for the show’s second season. “If I do get to do one—one would be the story of the Frontman [a former cop who now oversees the game],” he said. “I think the issue with police officers is not just an issue in Korea. I see it on the global news. This was an issue that I wanted to raise. Maybe in season two I can talk about this more.”

This post will be updated as more information becomes available.
