Emma Watson Revealed the Moment She ‘Fell in Love’ with ‘Harry Potter’ Costar Tom Felton

We all remember our first crush. And every millennial–including Emma Watson*–*remembers when we first fell for actor Tom Felton as he played the vicious blonde Slytherin, Draco Malfoy, in the Harry Potter series. Despite our loyalties to Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione Granger (Watson), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), and all Gryffindors, we could not resist the pale platinum blond bully for some reason.

On December 29, HBO Max shared a sneak peek at the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special with ET Canada ahead of its New Year’s Day premiere. Watson, who has spoken about her intense crush on Felton in the past, revealed the moment that caused her infatuation—and it’s very on-brand for the famed feminist.

“I walked into the room where we were having tutoring,” she recalled, per ET Canada. “The assignment that had been given was to draw what you thought God looked like, and Tom had drawn a girl with a backward cap on a skateboard. And I just don’t know how to say it — I just fell in love with him.”

She continued, “I used to come in every day and look for his number on the call sheet it was number seven, and if his name was on the call sheet, it was an extra exciting day,” she said. “He was three years above me and so for him, he was like, ‘You’re like my little sister.’”

For years, dating rumors circulated about the Harry Potter cast, including Emma Watson and Tom Felton. But the two admit in the special that they never dated, though Felton knew about Watson’s crush on him.

“I think I was in the hair and make-up chair and someone said something along the lines of, ‘Yeah, she had a crush on you,’” Felton said, according to the same sneak peek. “I became very protective over her. Yeah, I’ve always had a soft spot for her and that continues to this day. There’s always been something that’s like, I don’t know, a kinship.”

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will be available to stream on HBO Max on January 1.
