Ellen Pompeo Says ‘We Honestly Have Not Decided’ If ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Will Continue

Ellen Pompeo doesn’t know whether or not there will be a Season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy

During a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning, which aired on February 28, the actor behind Dr. Meredith Grey revealed she’s in the middle of a huge decision: whether or not Grey’s Anatomy will continue.

“We honestly have not decided. We’re really trying to figure it out right now,” Pompeo, who is also a producer on the longest-running primetime medical drama, explained. “It’s—what story do we tell? To end a show this iconic, you know, how do we do it? I just want to make sure we do this character and this show and the fans–I want to make sure we do it right.”

Questions surrounding Grey’s Anatomy’s demise first surfaced last year when Pompeo suggested season 17 could be the last. “We don’t know when the show is really ending yet. But the truth is, this year could be it,” Pompeo told Variety back in October. “I’m constantly fighting for the show as a whole to be as good as it can be. As a producer, I feel like I have permission to be able to do that. I mean, this is the last year of my contract right now. I don’t know that this is the last year, but it could very well could be.”

Since that interview, Grey’s Anatomy has been putting out some serious final season vibes. Multiple fan favorites from seasons past have made emotional cameos and viewers are honestly starting to worry Meredith will not wake up from her coma.

At the time the CBS Sunday Morning interview was recorded, even Pompeo said she didn’t know whether or not Meredith would recover. “I really don’t know at this point,” she insisted. “You know, we have choices.”

So basically, everything’s pretty much up in the air—even Ellen Pompeo’s post-Grey’s career. “I could do anything I want,” she said with a laugh. “Or not do anything at all.”
