Courteney Cox Played the ‘Friends’ Theme Song on the Piano, and It Sounds Great

Ross Geller may have been the musical sibling on Friends*—*Remember the bagpipes? And his “sound?”— but it’s Monica, a.k.a Courteney Cox, who can actually play in real life. Like many of us, Cox has been filling her days during the pandemic with new hobbies, like learning popular songs on the piano and posting clips to Instagram. And her latest is a fan favorite: “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts, which you probably know because it was the Friends theme song.
Cox posted a Reel of herself playing the song on February 18, starting from the iconic “claps” portion. Apparently, she was playing along to an actual episode of the show, because the clip ends with a voice saying, “I am telling you, years from now”—which Cox identifies as Chandler. Some super fan has probably already figured out which episode this was from, and kudos to that person.
Cox on the piano is accompanied by musician Joel Taylor on guitar.
Cox’s IRL friends and Friends fans liked the clip over 1.5 million times, proving once again just how much happiness this show has brought people. “This is amazing 🔥” commented Two Broke Girls star Beth Behrs. “So awesome court!” wrote SVU’s Mariska Hargitay.
Cox has also covered songs like “O-o-h Child,” “Drivers License,” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Silver Springs,” which her teen daughter, Coco, sang (she sounds…fantastic).
Friends isn’t the only iconic project Cox is revisiting: Scream 5 is happening! Cox reprises her role as reporter and true crime writer Gale Weathers in the horror franchise. On Halloween, she poked fun at her character’s iconic choppy, short bangs in the third installment of the series.
On Instagram, Cox asked followers to comment with what song she should learn on the piano next. Is it way too corny if we ask for “Smelly Cat?” Perhaps a Courteney Cox-Lisa Kudrow duet? It wouldn’t take long; the song has, like, three chords!
