Chrissy Teigen and John Legend Are Doing a Netflix Movie Together

Netflix just announced that its upcoming animated movie The Mitchells vs. the Machines will feature both halves of one of our favorite Hollywood couples: John Legend and Chrissy Teigen.

Formerly titled Connected, The Mitchells vs. the Machines follows the Mitchell family (including their dog) as they try to save the world from a technological uprising. It’s definitely a for-all-ages flick, but wouldn’t that also be a great premise for a horror movie? Our phones know everything about us. If they turned against humanity…we shudder to think.

The film is produced by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the duo behind the criminally underrated The Lego Movie, which definitely gets our hopes up.

The voice cast is absolutely stacked. Danny McBride and Maya Rudolph play parents Rick and Linda, with Broad City‘s Abbi Jacobson voicing daughter Katie. Charlyne Yi, Olivia Colman, Fred Armisen, Eric Andre, Conan O’Brien, Sasheer Zamata, Jay Pharoah, and Beck Bennett are also in the cast, alongside NBA star Blake Griffin. And of course, John and Chrissy. From one of Phil Lord’s tweets, it looks like they play Yi’s parents.

According to Variety, Sony Pictures had planned to release The Mitchells vs. the Machines last October, but that had to be put on pause because of the pandemic. In January 2021, Netflix bought the film for a reported $100 million. Writer and codirector Mike Rianda calls the project “a very personal movie about my very weird family.”

A weird family sharing their very personal, very weird, very 21st-century problems with the world? Yes, that sounds like the perfect John Legend–Chrissy Teigen project. The couple is notoriously open—and often hilarious—online, and we’d imagine that, as parents, they’re happy to get more family-friendly projects under their belts.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines drops on Netflix on April 30. We can’t wait to watch.
