Caitriona Balfe Wrote a Sweet Birthday Message to Her Outlander ‘Work Hubby’ Sam Heughan

Outlander‘s Sam Heughan turned 41 on April 30, and he received so many well wishes from loved ones—but none more effusive than the posts from his costar, Caitriona Balfe.

On screen, Heughan and Balfe play Jamie and Claire, star-crossed time-traveling lovers with, let’s face it, bonkers chemistry. Off-screen, Balfe is happily married but still close to her TV love interest.

“Happy happy birthday to this legend of a man… May this year bring you all the health, happiness and success you deserve. Honoured to know you and so grateful I was lucky enough to get you as my work hubby … Much love Hoooohan xxxx,” Balfe wrote on Twitter, poking gentle fun at Heughan’s last name. She also posted a picture of him watching soccer on his phone and sporting a gruesome leg injury, though that may have been the work of a talented makeup artist.

After forgetting to tag him in the original tweet, Bafle then quote-tweeted herself to add him. Good catch!

He replied, “Thanks Balfe!!! Love ya!xx”

The friendship-fest continued on Instagram, where Balfe posted a short video of Heughan making a goofy face in slow motion.

Balfe captioned the clip, “Happy birthday to this ridiculous human…. I think this video sums it up pretty well..!!! Ha. May this year bring you all the great things you deserve …. ❤️❤️”

On his own account, Heughan posted a post-workout selfie, noting that he’d done 41 reps of a few different exercises, though he joked that the number was random because he’s actually only 29 years old (Sam Heughan is indeed 41).

He also wrote, “Huge thank you to everyone who has sent me birthday wishes, feeling so loved!” It’s true, Sam, we love you. Maybe we don’t know you as well as Caitriona Balfe, but we love you. Seriously. So much.
