Britney Spears Says She’s ‘Not Even Close’ to Saying What She Needs to About Her Situation

Britney Spears says she’s just getting started opening up about her conservatorship situation.

Following the pop icon’s explosive testimony on June 23—in which she made clear she wants to end the legal arrangement she’s been under for 13 years—she’s been noticeably more transparent on social media. Whereas before the conservatorship was an elephant in every room, Spears is now openly discussing it. In recent posts alone she’s talked about how the conservatorship “killed her dreams” and took aim specifically at her father, Jamie, the conservator of her estate. She also called our her sister, Jamie Lynn, seemingly for her lack of support.

And there will be more posts to come. In her latest, Spears shared a photo of a graphic that reads “one day at a time” and wrote, “So I said ‘Life goes on’ in one of my recent posts, but it’s always easier said than done !!!!! In that moment that’s what felt was the easiest to say but I think we all know that I will never be able to let go and fully move on until I’ve said all I needed to say … and I’m not even close !!!! I was told to stay quiet about things for so long and I finally feel like I’m just getting here.”

For those unfamiliar, since 2008 Britney Spears has been under something known as a conservatorship, which doesn’t give her legal control over her life and finances. But thanks to the #FreeBritney movement (which, for two years, has been seeking to get Spears out of this arrangement), the end may be near—or at least there will be significant changes. Spears was finally granted the right to hire her own counsel, Mathew Rosengart; on July 19, he said his firm is “moving aggressively and expeditiously to file a petition to remove Jamie Spears” from Britney’s conservatorship.
