Angelina Jolie doesn’t say much publicly about her children: Maddox, Pax, Shiloh, Zahara, Vivienne, and Knox. But the actor, who’s in the process of divorcing Brad Pitt, opens up about her new normal in a recent interview with British Vogue.
Jolie admits the past few years have been “pretty hard.” (For context: She and Pitt announced their split in 2016.) After being asked, “Do you feel as if you’re at a happy stage in your life?” she says, “I don’t know…I’ve been focusing on healing our family. It’s slowly coming back, like the ice melting and the blood returning to my body…. I feel that I’m gonna hit my stride in my 50s.”
Despite having six children, she admits to not being a “traditional” mother and not having the “skills” to commit to being a stay-at-home mom. “Well, I was never very good at sitting still,” she explains. “Even though I wanted to have many children and be a mom, I always imagined it kind of like Jane Goodall, traveling in the middle of the jungle somewhere.”
She adds, “I didn’t imagine it in that true, traditional sense. I feel like I’m lacking in all the skills to be a traditional stay-at-home mom. I’m managing through it because the children are quite resilient, and they’re helping me, but I’m not good at it at all.”
Angelina Jolie’s divorce from Brad Pitt has been well-documented by the press. They are now reportedly amicable coparents. Jolie tells British Vogue their new home is “five minutes away” from Pitt’s. “I wanted it to be close to their dad,” she says.
In a 2019 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she echoed a similar sentiment: “I would love to live abroad and will do so as soon as my children are 18. Right now I’m having to base where their father chooses to live.”
Ultimately, Jolie is enjoying life with her kids. She says to British Vogue, “I loved having babies, but I love sitting up at night and talking to my kids. I like the teenage years. I like the older years. I love hanging out with them.”
