All the talk today will be on the Los Angeles Rams taking on the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl (and as a St. Louis native who is still infuriated with Rams owner Stan Kroenke and the NFL, I have two words: Go Bengals). But the real highlight of the week happens on Friday, February 18 when Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel returns. A lot is changing in Midge’s world, including this: After three seasons of Amazon Prime Video releasing all episodes at once, they’ll be dropping only two new episodes each Friday until the finale on March 11. Given that Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino basically create the equivalent of stunning mini-movies each episode, there’s something to be said for savoring each masterpiece.

Meanwhile, the Winter Olympics head into their last week before the flame is extinguished and the countdown to the 2026 games in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo begin. For a full schedule of remaining events, click here

And with that, here’s what to watch the week of February 13!

Sunday, February 13

Super Bowl LVI (NBC, Peacock): The biggest, though not necessarily the best, game of the year airs tonight from Los Angeles, with country star Mickey Guyton singing the national anthem and Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Dr. Dre performing in the halftime show. If you tune in for the commercials more than anything, just wait until you see Zendaya sporting a stunning seashell dress in her first Super Bowl ad on behalf of Squarespace. 6 P.M. ET/3 P.M. PT

Puppy Bowl (Animal Planet/Discovery+): The only competition I care about today. Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg return to coach the Puppy Bowl, which is in itself a huge feat since if it were left up to me, I’d just be taking photos of these adoral pups all day (check out all the pup-stars here). 2 P.M. ET

Bel-Air (Peacock): NBC will air Olympics coverage after the Super Bowl, but the show with the most post-Super Bowl hype is on their streaming service, Peacock, and it’s none other than Bel-Air. The Will Smith-produced re-imagining of the iconic sitcom stars newcomer Jabari Banks in the lead role and is set in present day. By now you probably know that even though the origin story is the same, there’s a lot that’s different about this re-telling, namely that it’s a hour-long drama and set in the present day. Streaming

Monday, February 14

Ali Wong: Don Wong (Netflix): Comedian Ali Wong releases her third Netflix special, Don Wong, on Valentine’s Day, which was filmed last November. According to the streamer, “Ali reveals her wildest fantasies, the challenges of monogamy, and how she really feels about single people.” (I’ll spoil it for you: We’re amazing). Nahnatchka Khan directs. Streaming.

These Are Your New Comfort TV Shows in 2022 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/these-are-your-new-comfort-tv-shows-in-2022.html Thu, 06 Jan 2022 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/these-are-your-new-comfort-tv-shows-in-2022.html [ad_1]

Being alive continues to be…a challenge. Too much heartbreak, too much paperwork. We turn to comfort TV for a relatively safe way to cope. Good for us! This is healthier than doing drugs or crimes (probably.)

Streaming services allow for a kind of self-administered mental morphine drip, through comfort shows. You know classic comfort TV: The Office. Friends. Gilmore Girls. Parks and Recreation. Maybe you rewatch critically-acclaimed comfort comedies like Fleabag, Insecure, 30 Rock, or Ted Lasso. Or maybe you stick to the classics: Seinfeld, The Nanny, Sex and the City, and Golden Girls. But at a certain point, rewatching shows you love is like trying to wring flavor out of the same piece of gum. (See instead: The recommendation below for Michaela Coel’s genius 2015 comedy, Chewing Gum.)

I’m not here to lecture you about watching less comfort TV. I’m here to try to cajole you into enjoying the comfort TV you watch more. There are so many undiscovered, underrated delights just awaiting you. “You took me by the hand/Made me a man/That one night/You made everything alright.” If you just sang those lyrics from the “Dinner Party” episode of The Office to yourself, you need a change. (See instead: The recommendation below for The Other Two, one of the funniest and most underrated comedies on TV.)

People can do hard things! Lady Gaga said that. And even though Gaga was speaking about how to exercise one’s moral compass through acts of kindness, I believe this can also be applied to watching a greater variety of TV comedies. Stretch yourself. Expand your horizons, without actually going outside or anything. You can still identify as a Samantha or Team Jess. But like a person who pries herself off the couch after 12 hours to change into a fresh pair of pajamas and get back on the couch, try switching one thing up, and see if it doesn’t feel good.

Comfort TV comedies to watch if you have…HBO Max

Starstruck. It’s hard to overstate how enjoyable Starstruck is. I sat down to watch 10 minutes of the first episode and I did not get up until I was almost done with the series. Hot celebrity men should fall for smart, funny, not-famous women more often—such is the plot of the charm-packed Starstruck, created by comedian Rose Matafeo, who also stars. It’s like Notting Hill, except in the 2020s, and Matafeo’s character compares her relationship with a movie star to “one of those weird animal friendship shows where you see a Labrador and a hedgehog who are friends.” It’s superb.

All the TV Shows Coming in 2022 to Put on Your Radar https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/all-the-tv-shows-coming-in-2022-to-put-on-your-radar.html Sun, 02 Jan 2022 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/all-the-tv-shows-coming-in-2022-to-put-on-your-radar.html [ad_1]

The new TV shows 2022 is blessing us with run the gamut. Want teen dramas? You got ’em. Scary shows? In stock. Another season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? Yup, that too. When it comes to keeping you occupied as you sit cozy on your couch, the new TV shows of the year have you covered.

Of course, that means figuring out what to watch specifically will be hard. There are so many options to choose from. But from the new TV shows 2022 is giving us, these are the ones we’re most excited about. These are the programs we can’t wait to binge-watch, tweet about, and scream about with our friends, coworkers, and strangers on the street. Hey, we’re living through unprecedented times; I can scream about The Bachelor as loud as I want to!

And Bridgerton. I’ll be screaming about that one too. I mean, who won’t be? The Netflix drama, based on Julia Quinn’s novels, achieved mind-boggling success when it first arrived in December 2020.

“I think [the Bridgerton adaptation] is a first for historical romance in any major way,” Quinn told Shondaland.com. “As a genre, we don’t get adapted. There’s Outlander, which is romance adjacent—we like to claim Diana Gabaldon to a degree—but it is a little bit different. I’ve often said that it’s no surprise that Shondaland would look past prejudices the romance genre has and say, ‘Hey, this a great story,’ because they’re all about storytelling. But I think people really haven’t looked to romance novels as viable adaptations in part because there is some stigma around them —they’re by women, for women, primarily edited by women.”

She continued, “More specifically, I think historical romance has been passed over because of the expense. Historical romance is going to be expensive to do, and unlike most contemporary stories, if you wanted to do a big period piece, you could go with a classic with prestige attached to it. This may come across the wrong way, but I’ll be honest and say that while I’m really excited for me, I’m also really excited for the genre.”

And I’m excited for the fans! Here are all the new upcoming TV shows, including Bridgerton, to get hyped about.

The Bachelor, season 26

Clayton Echard’s journey for love begins, with new host Jesse Palmer setting the scene. “For more than 20 years, The Bachelor has brought the world dozens of unforgettable love stories, including at one time, my own,” Palmer said in a statement. “Falling in love is one of life’s greatest gifts, and I am humbled by the opportunity to return to the show as host this season to offer the newest Bachelor advice gained from firsthand experience and I am grateful to play a small part in his journey.” Reality shows don’t get more iconic than this.

Premieres January 3 on ABC

“Severe, pale-eyed, handsome, Phil Burbank is brutally beguiling. All of Phil’s romance, power and fragility is trapped in the past and in the land: He can castrate a bull calf with two swift slashes of his knife; he swims naked in the river, smearing his body with mud. He is a cowboy as raw as his hides.

“The year is 1925. The Burbank brothers are wealthy ranchers in Montana. At the Red Mill restaurant on their way to market, the brothers meet Rose, the widowed proprietress, and her impressionable son Peter. Phil behaves so cruelly he drives them both to tears, reveling in their hurt and rousing his fellow cowhands to laughter—all except his brother George, who comforts Rose then returns to marry her.

“As Phil swings between fury and cunning, his taunting of Rose takes an eerie form—he hovers at the edges of her vision, whistling a tune she can no longer play. His mockery of her son is more overt, amplified by the cheering of Phil’s cowhand disciples. Then Phil appears to take the boy under his wing. Is this latest gesture a softening that leaves Phil exposed, or a plot twisting further into menace?”
