The trailer: As of late October 2021, Netflix hasn’t released a teaser or the official trailer, but we’ll post it here as soon as it becomes available.

The creative team: This will be the first new show created by Rhimes since Scandal, and she’ll also do the writing. Betsy Beers, who works on all the Shondaland shows, will serve as an executive producer, the Hollywood Reporter reports.

The source material: Much like the film Hustlers, Inventing Anna is based on a New York magazine article by journalist Jessica Pressler. “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” was first published in May 2018 and attempted to unravel the tangled web of lies that the woman known as Anna Delvey told as she conned the high society set in New York out of money, hotel rooms, and more in an effort to keep up her lavish lifestyle.

The cast: Netflix recently announced five major casting decisions for the show.

Julia Garner: Garner, who recently won an Emmy for her role on Ozark, will play Delvey. A press release from Netflix describes her as “a young woman in her mid-20s with a hard-to-place European accent who takes New York by storm. Either a brilliant businesswoman or a scammer extraordinaire, Anna in turn inspires loyalty, compassion, contempt, and obsession—all while leaving behind an emotional body count.”

Anna Chlumsky: The Veep alum will play Vivian, the reporter working on the story. Vivian is “working to salvage her career with just the right story. The Anna Delvey story is her golden ticket—she is willing to face any problem to get it. But as she works on the Anna story, there is one problem she never expected—Anna herself. The more Vivian pursues the truth about Anna, the more attached to Anna she becomes.”

Katie Lowes: The former Scandal star will play Rachel, who is “a natural-born follower and her blind worship of Anna almost destroys her job, her credit and her life. But while her relationship with Anna is her greatest regret, the woman she becomes because of Anna may be Anna’s greatest creation.”

Laverne Cox: Cox is set to play Kacy Duke. “A celebrity trainer and life coach, Kacy gets sucked into the Anna whirlwind but is mature and centered enough to stay out of any real trouble. When she least expects it, in the wake of Anna’s crimes, Kacy finds herself becoming a coach to more than just Anna.”

Alexis Floyd: The actress, whom you might remember as Tia on the most recent season of The Bold Type, will play Neff. “An aspiring filmmaker working as a hotel concierge, Neff knows New York and its people. Neff’s all style, all substance—more complex than most. She’s drawn in by Anna’s charm, but while passionate and loyal, she’s nobody’s fool.”

The air date: No release date has been announced as of yet.

This post will be updated as more details emerge.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Producer Says Patrick Dempsey’s ‘Terrorizing’ Behavior on Set Caused ‘PTSD’ https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/greys-anatomy-producer-says-patrick-dempseys-terrorizing-behavior-on-set-caused-ptsd.html Fri, 17 Sep 2021 18:22:32 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/greys-anatomy-producer-says-patrick-dempseys-terrorizing-behavior-on-set-caused-ptsd.html [ad_1]

Patrick Dempsey may have returned to Grey’s Anatomy for season 17 of the hit medical drama, but not everyone is ready to let go of the past.

On September 16, The Hollywood Reporter released an excerpt of Lynette Rice’s oral history of the show’s most dramatic moments behind the scenes. Specifically, this chapter of How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy is devoted to the “H.R. problems” that reportedly led to Dempsey’s exit from the series—and Dr. Derek Shepherd’s devastating death. Rice spoke with costars and exec producers that were present at the time, and, reader, things are about to get messy.

According to the excerpt, executive producer James D. Parriott was specifically brought back on board to oversee Dempsey’s final days on set. “Shonda needed an O.G. to come in as sort of showrunner for 14 episodes,” Parriott said. “There were H.R. issues. It wasn’t sexual in any way. He sort of was terrorizing the set. Some cast members had all sorts of PTSD with him. He had this hold on the set where he knew he could stop production and scare people. The network and studio came down and we had sessions with them. I think he was just done with the show. He didn’t like the inconvenience of coming in every day and working. He and Shonda were at each other’s throats.”

ABC/Getty

Producer Jeannine Renshaw spoke specifically about the tension between Dempsey and his costar Ellen Pompeo. “There were times where Ellen was frustrated with Patrick and she would get angry that he wasn’t working as much,” Renshaw told Rice. “She was very big on having things be fair. She just didn’t like that Patrick would complain that ‘I’m here too late’ or ‘I’ve been here too long’ when she had twice as many scenes in the episode as he did. When I brought it up to Patrick, I would say, ‘Look around you. These people have been here since 6:30 a.m.’ He would go, ‘Oh, yeah.’”

Renshaw added, “He’s like a kid. He’s so high energy and would go, ‘What’s happening next?’ He literally goes out of his skin, sitting and waiting. He wants to be out driving his race car or doing something fun. He’s the kid in class who wants to go to recess.”

Ultimately, Renshaw says the “final straw” for creator Shonda Rhimes was witnessing Dempsey’s complaints on set. “Shonda had to say to the network, ‘If he doesn’t go, I go,’” Renshaw recalled. “Nobody wanted him to leave, because he was the show. Him and Ellen. Patrick is a sweetheart. It messes you up, this business.”

One longtime crew member who chose to remain anonymous told Rice that Dempsey was a “Lone Ranger” among “rogue actresses” (what does that even mean?). Read what he had to say in full and please, mind the misogyny:

Dear Reader, you may (or may not) already know that the second season of Bridgerton is confirmed, so while you impatiently wait for brand-new episodes of the Netflix period drama to roll out, we have some other exciting news to share: Shondaland teamed up with Meena Harris’s social-justice brand Phenomenal and Nell Diamond’s Hill House Home (i.e., the lifestyle brand behind the always sold-out Nap Dress) to release a capsule of “Regencycore” pieces that you’ll be burning for the second you lay eyes on them.

The five-piece collection officially hits Phenomenal’s website today—and includes three limited-edition Nap Dress styles and two crystal-embellished bobby pins. The two sleeveless smocked Ellie dresses feature custom floral prints in pink and lavender by Diane Hill, a Black artist based in London whose work is inspired by chinoiserie, a decorative art style. The third Nesli dress, which has puffed short sleeves and a square neckline, comes in a vining white floral print, aptly named the Whistledown Trellis. The dresses ring in at $125 each, and the hair accessories at $40.

“With summer in full swing, we’re excited to bring fans a piece of Bridgerton to wear while they await the second season,” Meena Harris, founder and CEO of Phenomenal shares in a press release. “What better way to do that in true ‘Regencycore’ style than through the versatile and iconic Hill House Home Nap Dress?” This exclusive collection marks the second Bridgerton collaboration with Phenomenal, the first of which included a sell-out drop of pastel-hued sweatshirts and hoodies

“Regencycore” trends (think corsets, opera gloves, Empire-waist dresses, and dramatic headpieces with pearls and feathers) have been booming since the debut of the award-winning series, making this collaboration perfect for the show’s fashion lovers. As for the dresses themselves? Well, the Hill House Home Nap Dress is ideal for lounging at home, perhaps watching reruns of season one—or venturing out for “little walks” with suitors in nearby parks. Sandra Oh Just Revealed Whether or Not She’ll Make a ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Cameo https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/sandra-oh-just-revealed-whether-or-not-shell-make-a-greys-anatomy-cameo.html Tue, 11 May 2021 18:25:49 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/sandra-oh-just-revealed-whether-or-not-shell-make-a-greys-anatomy-cameo.html [ad_1]

If you were hoping for a Meredith-Cristina reunion, fire up the fan fic, because it’s not happening on Grey’s Anatomy. Sandra Oh says she’s moved on from the character and won’t be making a cameo on the series, which was just renewed for its 18th season.

Asked on the Asian Enough podcast whether she might make a cameo, Oh replied a definitive no, reports Us Weekly. Given that the most recent season has seen the return of characters like Mark, Lexie, Derek, and April, it’s a fair question. Oh, too, understands it; fans are still attached to the character, perhaps more so than she is at this point. She said, “In some ways, you do your work as a bubble and you let it go. I left that show, my God, seven years ago almost. So in my mind, it’s gone. But for a lot of people, it’s still very much alive. And while I understand and I love it, I have moved on.”

That’s not to say she doesn’t still have a place in her heart for all the Cristina Yang fans out there. “I love it, though, and this is also why I really appreciate the show…that I still get asked [about returning],” she said, adding, “It’s very rare, I would say, to be able to see in such a way the impact of a character.”

Oh played Meredith’s workaholic bestie Cristina Yang for nearly a decade and won a Golden Globe in the process. Unlike other characters who were dramatically killed off the series, Yang is still canonically alive, which perhaps fuels the desire for a reunion. But in the fictional Grey’s universe, she’s probably busy. “Cristina, like I imagine all the health care workers, [would be] wickedly at the front line trying to solve the big problems,” imagined Oh. “This pandemic [has made] the wealth gaps…even more obvious and problematic, so [she] probably [is] attacking the systematic problems, not just the day in and day out.”

Honestly, we can’t blame Oh for staying booked and busy and looking for new projects. And for those who still miss Sandra Oh/Dr. Cristina Yang moments, well, you have, like, a hundred hours of early Grey’s seasons to rewatch anytime you want.

Shonda Rhimes Was ‘Shocked’ by Backlash Over Regé-Jean Page’s Exit From ‘Bridgerton’ https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/shonda-rhimes-was-shocked-by-backlash-over-rege-jean-pages-exit-from-bridgerton.html Thu, 15 Apr 2021 19:47:42 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/shonda-rhimes-was-shocked-by-backlash-over-rege-jean-pages-exit-from-bridgerton.html [ad_1]

Shonda Rhimes is no stranger to outrage from Grey’s Anatomy fans—but she wasn’t expecting the backlash over Regé-Jean Page’s exit from Bridgerton.

“I was really shocked because, usually, that happens when I’ve killed off somebody that’s been around for a while,” she told Vanity Fair in a new interview. “Like, we didn’t kill him, he’s still alive!”

Netflix and Shondaland announced Page’s departure on April 2 with a letter from Lady Whistledown herself. “Dear Readers, while all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings,” the Instagram post read.

The furious response from fans was immediate and intense. Even Kim Kardashian mourned the actor’s departure, but Rhimes would like to point out that each Bridgerton novel by Julia Quinn is meant to focus on a different member of the British family.

“[Regé-Jean] is a powerful, amazing actor and that meant we did our job—every season, our job is finding the right people and putting together this incredible, world-shifting romance,” Rhimes said. “I don’t know that I expected this much of an explosion, given that every book [in the Bridgerton series] is a different romance. What would be the ever-after of this combo? I mean, really: What would Regé-Jean do, you know what I mean? We gave them their happily-ever-after! And now we have this next couple coming. And so yeah, I was like, whoa!”

Ultimately, as Page previously told Variety, his stint on the show was always meant to be a one-off (though Rhimes did confirm to Vanity Fair that he was later invited to return for cameos in season two). “That was the plan: come and do one season as the duke,” she said. “Anything else that was extra and wasn’t really the plan when we started wasn’t the plan when we finished.”

Shonda Rhimes also pointed out that finding actors that audiences get “overly attached to” is kinda her whole thing. “He’s amazing, but that’s our job and something that Betsy [Beers] and I have been doing since, well, God, has it been 20 years now?—is finding guys,” Rhimes said of an impressive list that includes Patrick Dempsey, Eric Dane, Tony Goldwyn, and now Page. “I mean, hopefully ladies too, but finding men that our audiences find devastatingly attractive and they become incredibly overly attached to, and they get enraged about when we move them about in any way.”

Sounds like we need to hold on tight to Anthony Bridgerton actor Jonathan Bailey while we still can

Shonda Rhimes Says Hollywood Foreign Press Rejected Her ‘Bridgerton’ Press Conference Request https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/shonda-rhimes-says-hollywood-foreign-press-rejected-her-bridgerton-press-conference-request.html Thu, 18 Mar 2021 12:58:07 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/shonda-rhimes-says-hollywood-foreign-press-rejected-her-bridgerton-press-conference-request.html [ad_1]

Shonda Rhimes is one of the most successful showrunners right now. Maybe you’ve heard of her? She’s the brains behind major TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and, most recently, an executive producer on Bridgerton. So she’s not afraid to call out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for refusing to hold a press conference for the record-breaking Netflix hit. Rhimes recently retweeted an article from The Wrap that exposed the bias of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) against Black creators, offering some insight of her own.

“HFPA rejected our press conference. Until it was a ‘surprise hit’ (Grey’s, Scandal, Murder -SURPRISE!) And yet they STILL asked me to show up in person to present at the Globes. We’re not the only ones. This is why HFPA’s house is on fire,” Rhimes tweeted. “They lit the flame w/their own ignorance.”

The article Rhimes retweeted is an exclusive from The Wrap about how the HFPA rejected requests to hold press conferences for a variety of recent projects, including Girls Trip and Queen & Slim. This is more evidence of the obvious discrimination within the association that holds the Golden Globe Awards.

“All three projects submitted requests through their studio or streaming distributor to hold press conferences with the 87-member organization and were turned down for lack of interest or other reasons, according to individuals close to each project,” the publication reports, according to The Root. “None wound up receiving a single Globe nomination.”

After the 2021 Golden Globe nominations, it was revealed that the group of international journalists responsible for giving out Golden Globes does not have one Black member. Variety notes that the HFPA hasn’t had a Black member for at least 20 years.

Shonda Rhimes shared a post from Time’s Up about the lack of representation within the HFPA. “Enough is enough,” she wrote as the caption. Time’s Up president and CEO Tina Tchen released a statement this month about the HFPA agreeing to address its diversity problem: “So NBCUniversal, Dick Clark Productions, and the HFPA just declared that they have a plan to fix problems they’ve ignored for decades.”

The statement continued, “We’re not so sure. On behalf of the many artists who look to us to hold the HFPA’s feet to the fire on the racism, disrespect, misogyny, and alleged corrupt financial dealings of the Golden Globes, we need to see specific details, timetables for change, and firm commitments. The right words are not enough. The clock is ticking.”

A Guide to Shonda Rhimes’s Netflix Shows https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/a-guide-to-shonda-rhimess-netflix-shows.html Tue, 05 Jan 2021 19:30:00 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/a-guide-to-shonda-rhimess-netflix-shows.html [ad_1]

In August 2017 longtime ABC showrunner and producer Shonda Rhimes—the genius behind Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal—shocked her fans and the industry when she announced she was leaving the network to create a slew of new shows for Netflix.

Rhimes, who signed a $300 million deal with the streaming powerhouse, didn’t reveal any details about the shows she was working on for almost a full year, before finally announcing eight projects in The New York Times—all of which felt quite different from what we’ve seen from her in the past.

“Everybody thinks that there’s a ‘Shondaland show,’” Rhimes told the Times. “No. There’s a Shondaland show that we made for ABC. Now I can’t wait to show everybody what a Shondaland show is that we make for the world.”

And what does a Shondaland show for the world look like? Bridgerton, for one. The historical romance was the fifth biggest premiere for Netflix and to date has been watched by 63 million households.

Another example: Shondaland and Netflix acquired the rights to New York magazine’s viral story of ultra-scammer Anna Delvey and have adapted it into a forthcoming television show.

“I knew exactly what the show was, which is a very clear indicator,” Ms. Rhimes told The New York Times after reading the Delvey story while on vacation in Arizona. She said she starting writing it “almost immediately.”

Below, a list of all the Shonda Rhimes shows and movies on Netflix—some available for streaming, some still to come—and everything we know about them so far.

Hot Chocolate Nutcracker

This moving documentary about Debbie Allen Dance Academy’s take on the world-famous Nutcracker ballet came out in November 2020.

Bridgerton

This hit series, which premiered on Netflix in December 2020, is inspired by author Julia Quinn’s collections of eight fiction novels set between 1813 and 1825. Each novel is from the perspective of one of the Bridgerton children who make up the wealthy and influential British family. The series was executive-produced by Rhimes alongside creator, executive producer, and showrunner Chris Van Dusen (a Scandal vet!).

Notes on Love

“Shondaland’s Notes on Love is an episodic anthology series that ranges across genres and explores the unexpected, life-changing, euphoric, hilarious, surreal, and all-consuming places where love intersects with our lives,” per a Netflix press release. Each installment will come from a different visionary creative, including Jenny Han, Diane Warren, Lindy West and Ahamefule J. Oluo, Norman Lear, Steve Martin, and Shonda Rhimes herself.

Inventing Anna

This series is based on Jessica Pressler’s viral New York magazine article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” and will star Ozark‘s Julia Garner in the title role. The series was filmed in New York City, as seen below, though a premiere date remains unknown.

‘Bridgerton’ Is on Track to Become One of Netflix’s Biggest Hits https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/bridgerton-is-on-track-to-become-one-of-netflixs-biggest-hits.html Tue, 05 Jan 2021 14:13:38 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/bridgerton-is-on-track-to-become-one-of-netflixs-biggest-hits.html [ad_1]

Word on the street is Netflix’s original series, Bridgerton, is a hit—like, a huge hit. Shonda Rhimes executive-produced the series, and it’s the first of several projects she has in development with the streaming platform. For the uninitiated, Bridgerton follows the siblings of a powerful family who try to find love during England’s Regency era. It’s sexy, fun, and wildly popular.

On January 4, Netflix tweeted, “In their first four weeks, it’s projected that 63 million households will have courted Shondaland’s Bridgerton and 44 million households will have suited up for Robert Rodriguez’s We Can Be Heroes, making this our biggest viewing week between Christmas and New Year’s ever!” This makes Bridgerton Netflix’s fifth-largest original series premiere ever, according to TV Line.

Bridgerton is led by For the People’s Regé-Jean Page and Younger’s Phoebe Dynevor as the main couple, who love to hate each other and hate to love each other. (Read: Their sexual chemistry is off the charts.) Of course, like any Shondaland show, Bridgerton is full of attractive people, endless drama, and juicy storylines. The biggest mystery of the show is the identity of Lady Whistledown, an anonymous scribe documenting the lives of London’s high society. She’s basically a British, more refined Gossip Girl, who’s also voiced by Julie Andrews. See, we told you this show is good.

It premiered Christmas 2020 and, in terms of ratings, is only surpassed by The Witcher season one, Stranger Things season three, Money Heist: Part 4, and Tiger King. Since it hit Netflix, fans have been voicing their enthusiasm on social and are already demanding a second season. It hasn’t even been out two weeks, but Twitter has zero chill.

“I loved the #Bridgerton series so much, I’ve actually watched it twice. Can’t wait for Season two,” one viewer tweeted.

Another wrote, “I think before season two comes out, I would have learned every single scene word for word, with the way I keep re-watching #Bridgerton.” One fan praised Rhimes for her genius: “This series was phenomenal. From the perfectly executed scenes to the stunning musical soundtrack of each episode as well as stellar acting by every cast member. Shonda Rhimes really outdid herself with this one cannot wait for season two!”

Even the cast has hinted they’re ready to film another season. “If the seasons are sticking to the books, then it’s Anthony’s turn to find love, so we’re passing on the baton, in that respect,” Dynevor told Elle in a recent interview. “I want to see Daphne get involved in Anthony’s love life a bit, as he sort of meddled with hers quite a lot. I think that will be fun.”

Yes, please!

When will Bridgerton premiere?

The drama, created by longtime Shonda Rhimes collaborator Chris Van Dusen (Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy), will premiere on Netflix on Christmas Day: December 25, 2020.

How many episodes will there be?

There are eight one-hour episodes.

What is the series about?

Bridgerton is based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling romance novels and is set in the high-society world of London. The series follows Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor, the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family, as she makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market.

Per Netflix, “Hoping to follow in her parents’ footsteps and find a match sparked by true love, Daphne’s prospects initially seem to be unrivaled. But as her older brother begins to rule out her potential suitors, the high-society scandal sheet written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews) casts aspersions on Daphne. Enter the highly desirable and rebellious Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), committed bachelor and the catch of the season for the debutantes’ mamas. Despite proclaiming that they want nothing the other has to offer, their attraction is undeniable and sparks fly as they find themselves engaged in an increasing battle of wits while navigating society’s expectations for their future.”
