Serena Williams and her daughter, four-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia, wore matching outfits to the premiere of King Richard at the TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night, November 14. They attended the premiere with Williams’s husband and Alexis Olympia’s father, Alexis Ohanian.

King Richard follows Serena and Venus Williams’s journey on the tennis circuit with their father and coach, Richard Williams, played by Will Smith in the film.  Smith is already generating Oscar buzz for his moving performance as the father of the tennis legends. 

Smith told People about his role, “People saw him as the classic driving patriarch, and he could not have been more different than that. That was Richard Williams’ world persona. And that’s how he dealt with people on the outside world, but he is the mushiest and like lovey-dovey father with his children.”

“You can live your dream,” Williams told People at the premiere. “Can’t be afraid of hard work, you know elbow, grease, but more than anything to have fun along the way. Like, you got to have support and that the connection to family is just invaluable. You know, you never give up on that. You never give up on that.” 

Williams also opened up to People about Will Smith playing her dad. “To have Will play my father it was just incredible. … I mean wow, it’s Will Smith! You’re like, ‘It’s Will! Can I have an autograph?’ Relax. Play it cool and play hard to get, like, actually we would like to just consider you and you’re like, absolutely. But when you first hear Will, it’s a sure thing,” she said. 

King Richard hits theaters on Friday, November 19. 

We call the Serena Williams the G.O.A.T. for a reason: It takes greatness to recognize when it’s time to put yourself and your health first. The tennis player announced on Instagram on Wednesday, August 25 that she decided to withdraw from the US Open to give herself the space to heal from a torn hamstring. 

“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,” she wrote on the social media platform. 

She continued, “New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play—I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone on from afar. Thank you for your continued support and love. I’ll see you soon.” 

Williams has been in recovery since retiring from her first-round match at Wimbledon in June, after she slipped on court and injured her right hamstring. 

The US Open, which takes place in New York City, was set to being on August 30 and has been an important part of Williams’ athletic career. It’s there that she’s won six singles titles, including her first Grand Slam singles title in 1999. The last time she missed the tournament was in 2017, during her break from tennis for the birth of her daughter, Olympia. 

Last year at the US Open, spectators were not allowed to attend due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But little Olympia was there, front and center, to cheer on her mom. Later, Williams was asked what she hoped Olympia saw while watching her play. “Well, I forgot she was coming out, so I hope that she saw her mama fighting,” she replied. “Hi, Baby. I don’t think she was paying attention, between you and me. She may have been playing with some princesses upstairs.”

Serena Williams has some sage advice for married couples—and those dealing with heartbreak.

In a new video for Bumble, the tennis star opened up about her life and marriage to Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian. The couple tied the knot in 2017 and have a three-year-old daughter, Olympia. 

“Marriage is not bliss, but it can be if you work at it,” she said in the video, which she posted to Instagram on March 27. “I learned that love is an amazing feeling, and if you have an opportunity to feel it, then it’s a special thing. That’s been a lot of fun.”

This is not the first time Williams has spoken about how her relationship with Ohanian continues to thrive. “Alexis doesn’t dim my light. He doesn’t try to dim my light,” she told Allure in 2019. “He puts me in the light, even if I don’t want to be. He pushes me to further points I never thought about. It always was something that I could see in some relationships—my light would be dimmer. Now I feel like I can shine really bright and still do everything that I want to do.”

For Ohanian, it’s all about showing up. In fact, he wrote an entire essay about it for Glamour. “I think if you were to ask my wife, or many other people in relationships, it’s often the simpler things that are the most important. You have to show up,” he said in 2019. “You have to be supportive. These are the things that matter.”

Something that matters most to Williams is loyalty, which she tells Bumble is a deal breaker for her. “Not having it,” she clarified. She also offered this piece of wisdom to those who are less lucky in love. “Heartbreak is a part of life, whether it be a loved one, a boyfriend, or animal,” she said. “But time heals all wounds.”

Serena Williams is continuing to show her support for Meghan Markle in the wake of the duchess’s tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey. 

Shortly after Markle’s buzzed-about chat—in which she outlined the struggles she experienced behind the scenes with the royal family and British press—Williams released a statement of support on Instagram. Now, in a new conversation with Stuart Weitzman’s “Shine Series” (she’s the global spokeswoman for the brand), Williams opens up about why she decided to speak out. 

“Meghan is a great person and I think the epitome of strength, the epitome of confidence, the epitome of just selflessness, and the epitome of everything is just her and everything that she’s gone through,” Williams told Behnaz Ghahramani, Stuart Weitzman’s chief marketing officer. 

The tennis champ continued, “And I know it’s not easy, and you can see from the interview that it wasn’t easy. But she had so much poise and she still had so much class.”

Serena Williams added that Meghan Markle is the “strongest person” she knows. 

“I don’t know anyone else that could handle anything on such a global scale the way that she’s had to handle things that are just untrue—minute after minute. Not even day after day. Just minute after minute, another untrue allegation being thrown at her,” she said. “I think it was important for me to say something because I’m tired of sitting back and seeing all this negativity that’s just not true.”

In her original Instagram statement, Williams said of Markle, “She teaches me every day what it means to be truly noble. Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she’s experienced. I know firsthand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of color to minimize us, to break us down, and demonize us. We must recognize our obligation to decry malicious, unfounded gossip and tabloid journalism. The mental health and consequences of systemic oppression and victimization are devastating, isolating, and all too often lethal.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have a very famous friend supporting them after their interview with Oprah Winfrey: tennis matriarch Serena Williams. After CBS aired the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s chat with Winfrey, Williams, a longtime friend of Meghan Markle’s, took to Instagram to show her support, particularly as a Black woman in the spotlight.

“Meghan Markle, my selfless friend, lives her life–and leads by example–with empathy and compassion. She teaches me every day what it means to be truly noble,” wrote Williams in a Notes App statement. “Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she’s experienced.”

Referring to her own struggle in the spotlight, Williams added, “I know first hand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of color to minimize us, to break us down, and demonize us. We must recognize our obligation to decry malicious, unfounded gossip and tabloid journalism. The mental health and consequences of systemic oppression and victimization are devastating, isolating, and all too often lethal.” 

In the days leading up to the interview, there was another round of rumors about Markle in the press, and many of her friends and former coworkers spoke out on her behalf, praising her good character. Williams is perhaps her most famous ally. In 2019, Williams called Markle “literally the strongest” person she knows.

During the conversation with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry revealed their second child will be a girl. Williams is the mother of daughter Alexis Olympia, and wrote in her statement about the kind of world she wants for all our daughters: “I want Meghan’s daughter, my daughter, and your daughter to live in a society that is driven by respect.” She captioned her post, “I am so proud of you for being so brave. I know it is never easy. You are strong—both you and Harry. I love you. I adore you. Your friend S.”

Serena Williams isn’t just passing down her love of sports to her daughter, Olympia—she’s also passing down her sense of style. The adorable mother-daughter duo star in Stuart Weitzman’s Footsteps to Follow spring 2021 campaign, and honestly, it might be the cutest thing you’ll watch all day. Or maybe all month because it’s seriously that cute.

“Serena is back… and this time she’s joined by a very special guest!” the luxury shoe brand captioned the Instagram video, announcing the partnership with Williams (and little Olympia).

“Waking up every day to see her so happy to see me is a feeling I never thought I would experience,” Williams says about her daughter. “While I try to teach her how to be a positive influence, she, in fact, teaches me how to be a stronger person every day. It’s the best part about being a mom. Being on set with Olympia meant so much to me, and it is a moment together I will never forget. She is mini Serena! She’s so cute and she’s so fun.”

The campaign marks Serena Williams’s fourth year as a global spokesperson for Stuart Weitzman, but it’s her first fashion campaign with Olympia. “I created this collection with an intentional, artful approach to design, engineering, and craftsmanship,” the brand’s global head of design, Edmundo Castillo, says. “The styles offer a renewed and emboldened sense of functionality and fashion to elevate the casual elegance of the modern woman.”

Fans of Serena Williams are flooding the her with love after she exited a post-Australian Open press junket in tears.

On February 17, the 23-time Grand Slam victor lost the semifinal to Naomi Osaka in just two sets. After hugging the 23-year-old superstar, Williams gave a wave to the crowd with a hand over her heart. 

In the post-match news conference, one reporter asked Williams if the gesture was a form of “farewell” as retirement rumors persist. “If I ever say farewell, I wouldn’t tell anyone,” the 39-year-old replied. 

Another reporter then asked what Williams thought may have caused her errors against Osaka, or if it was just one of those days. “I don’t know,” Williams said through tears. “I’m done.”

Now, fans of Osaka and Williams are showing both incredible players support online. “Taking a moment to think about how lucky we are to be in a time to watch both Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka,” one user wrote. “This is black history.”

“SERENA WILLIAMS HAS THE RECORD FOR THE MOST GRAND SLAM TITLES IN THE OPEN ERA & WON THE 2017 AUSTRALIAN OPEN WHILE PREGNANT,” another user couldn’t help but remind everyone at home. “I COULDNT MAKE MYSELF A CUP OF TEA IN THE FIRST 3 MONTHS OF PREGNANCY SHE WON A GRAND SLAM THERE IS NO GREATER ATHLETE.”

Osaka also praised the G.O.A.T  in an interview. “I was a little kid watching her play,” Osaka told the crowd. “Just to be on the court playing against her, for me, is a dream.”

Following the press conference, Serena Williams took to Instagram to thank her fans. “Melbourne and my Australian fans—Today was not an ideal outcome or performance but it happens,” she wrote. “I am so honored to be able to play in front of you all.” 

She continued, “Your support—your cheers, I only wish I could have done better for you today. I am forever in debt and grateful to each and every single one of you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I adore you.”

Serena Williams’s husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, gets it. You know how no one ever calls a talented director “a great male director,” or lists an awesome chef as “one of the top male cooks to watch out for?” Yeah, the gender qualifier is only ever deployed when we talk about women’s accomplishments, and it’s probably time to stop bringing it up when we’re trying to praise someone’s abilities. Which is why  Ohanian displayed that message on his shirt as he watched his wife play in the Australian Open on Tuesday, February 16.

His tee depicted Williams and the words “greatest female athlete,” with “female” crossed out. Not that we should have to explain this, but just in case anyone is trying to get this twisted: He’s not minimizing her femaleness. He’s saying she’s the greatest athlete, period, no need to elaborate further. Jarmere Jenkins, Williams’s hitting partner, wore the shirt as well, as noted by the Huffington Post.

Williams won her matches against number-two tournament seed Simona Halep, and will advance to a semifinal against Naomi Osaka. Ohanian celebrated her win on Twitter, making a dig at Madrid Open director and former pro Ion Tiriac, who recently suggested Williams should retire. 

Serena Williams made a little joke herself about how long she’s been playing the game. When asked about her ability to score a point after a long rally, she said she hadn’t been dominating that skill since “the summer of 1926.” She also said it’s something she’s good at and needs to embrace. Literally owning her power and we love to see it.

As for that shirt, Ohanian hinted that Nike might soon produce more, calling himself just the company’s model on Twitter.

I’ll take one in medium, please. And a husband as supportive as Alexis Ohanian, if Nike makes those too. 

What Super Bowl? As far as I’m concerned, the only sporting event that took place on February 7 was the 2021 Australian Open, and the only GOAT we need to talk about is Serena Williams.

The tennis player with 23 Grand Slams under her belt won her first match against Laura Siegemund (ending both sets 6-1)—and she did it all in a one-legged pink, red, and black catsuit. If that’s not epic enough for ya, the look was actually a touching tribute to another star athlete. 

“I was inspired by Flo-Jo, who was a wonderful track athlete, amazing athlete when I was growing up,” Williams said in a postmatch interview. “Watching her fashion just always changing, her outfits were always amazing. This year we thought of, What can we do to keep elevating the Serena Williams on the court? The Nike team actually thought of this design of inspiration from Flo-Jo. I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is so brilliant.’”

In case you don’t know, Florence Griffith Joyner (or Flo-Jo) is an American track star who set the world record in 1988 for both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Though she died in 1998, Joyner remains the fastest woman of all time. 

She was also known for her vibrant fashion sense on and off the field—which included multiple one-legged track looks. 

Serena also honored another legendary athlete during her press junket: Venus Williams. “She’s such an inspiration,” Serena said of her sister, who also won her first match on February 7 against Kirsten Flipkens. “She never gets frustrated about her situation healthwise and she’s always looking on the bright side.”

“She works so hard—she’s been great,” the tennis star continued. “We were hitting partners for the first two and a half weeks here in Australia. It was so good to train with her every day and also very inspiring because she still pushes me on a level that no one’s able to push me.”
