Prince Harry plans to raise his children a lot differently than he and Prince William were raised by Prince Charles.

“My father used to say to me when I was younger, he used to say to William and I, ‘Well, it was like that for me, so it’s gonna be like that for you.’ That doesn’t make sense,” the Duke of Sussex said during the third episode of his mental health docuseries, The Me You Can’t See, per Us Weekly. “Just because you suffered, it doesn’t mean that your kids have to suffer. In fact, quite the opposite. If you suffered, do everything you can to make sure that whatever experiences, negative experiences that you had, you can make it right for your kids.”

That isn’t what Prince Harry or Meghan Markle want for baby Archie or their future daughter, who is due this summer. “Isn’t this all about breaking the cycle?” Prince Harry continued. “Isn’t it all about making sure that history doesn’t repeat itself? That whatever pain and suffering has happened to you that you don’t pass on?” 

Part of breaking the cycle for the duke and duchess was stepping down from their roles as senior royals. Before meeting Markle, Prince Harry says he used drugs and drank as a coping mechanism to deal with the death of his mother, Princess Diana. But when history began to repeat itself and his wife was dealing with suicidal thoughts, their calls for help were apparently met with “total silence” from the palace. 

Thankfully, starting therapy worked wonders. “One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in life is you sometimes have to go back and to deal with really uncomfortable situations. And to be able to process it in order to be able to heal. For me, therapy has equipped me to be able to take on anything. That’s why I’m here now, that’s why my wife is here now,” Prince Harry shared. “That feeling of being trapped within the family is…there was no option to leave. Eventually, when I made that decision for my family, I was still told, ‘You can’t do this.’ I was like, ‘How bad does it have to get so I am allowed to do this?’ When she was going to end her life? It shouldn’t have to get to that.”

Queen Elizabeth II is reportedly tired of Prince Charles’s attitude toward Prince Harry.

On May 6, Us Weekly reported that Prince Charles “may never forgive” his son for the tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey that caused quite a bit of backlash against the royal family. The queen’s supposed thoughts? Get over it.

“With the way things are going, Charles may never forgive Harry, which hasn’t gone down well with Elizabeth,” the source said. “She feels that he’s putting his pride before the best interest of the monarchy. She has enough on her plate dealing with the loss of her husband. It’s drama she can do without.”

While Prince Willam and Prince Harry reportedly started a dialogue at their grandfather Prince Philip’s funeral, this source claims that Prince Charles is more “stubborn.” This tracks with a report in April that Prince Charles has allegedly chosen to “freeze out” his youngest son.

“Charles is working toward a new slimmed-down monarchy and is freezing Harry out. He’s actually already out,”  a source told Us Weekly in a report published on April 29. “After the damage Harry has caused the family, he firmly believes that his son doesn’t deserve the privilege of being a royal.”

This may have something to do with Prince Harry’s particularly damning critiques of his father in the March Oprah Winfrey interview. During the chat, the Duke of Sussex revealed his father stopped taking his calls when his family first moved to Canada and was dealing with startling security concerns. 

“I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar. He knows what pain feels like, and Archie’s his grandson,” Prince Harry told Winfrey, referring specifically to the parallels between Meghan Markle and Princess Diana. “But at the same time, I will always love him. There’s a lot of hurt that’s happened, and I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship.” Prince Harry also said “there’s a lot to work through there” to repair their father-son bond.

In the newest Us Weekly report, the insider revealed that Queen Elizabeth much prefers Prince William’s “dignified approach” toward her other grandson. 

“They’re definitely not at the point where they speak on a regular basis, but William wants to be the bigger person and set a precedent. He believes that in order to repair damage and destruction from Harry’s interview, the best approach is to keep things civil with his brother rather than fanning the flames and fighting back with a tit-for-tat attitude,” the source says. “Elizabeth is proud of William for taking the dignified approach, unlike Charles, who still hasn’t forgiven Harry for dragging his name through the mud.”

While the phrasing of that quote seems to put Prince Harry at fault as opposed to those who reportedly made it impossible for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to safely remain in the U.K., it’s good to know some members of the royal family are making an effort.

Prince Harry may have opened the door to reconciliation with most of the royal family, but things are reportedly still tense with Prince Charles. 

During Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired in early March, the Duke of Sussex revealed that Prince Charles stopped taking his calls when he initially relocated to Canada. While Prince Harry and Prince William were spotted talking in private, sources say that Prince Charles is “still fuming” about the interview.

They only know what they know, and that’s the thing: I’ve tried to educate them through the process I have been educated.”

That really didn’t go over well with Prince Charles, according to the source. “Charles is working toward a new slimmed-down monarchy and is freezing Harry out. But that doesn’t mean Prince Harry has been banging down his father’s door. “To be honest, Harry didn’t go running back to Charles, begging for forgiveness, either,” the source also said. “He still hasn’t forgiven his father for his lack of effort and support after he and Meghan decided to move. The reason Harry went back to the U.K. was to see the queen and to pay his respects to Prince Philip. That’s about as far as it goes.”

They added, “To put it bluntly, it’s unlikely that we’ll be seeing Harry and Charles making amends anytime soon.”

The official word from the queen is that the royal family is addressing Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey privately. But behind closed doors, Prince William is said to be “devastated” about what his brother and sister-in-law revealed on CBS March 7.

“William is devastated by this interview,” royal expert Katie Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight, per Us Weekly. According to Nicholl, Prince William is particularly upset about Kate Middleton being brought into the conversation. (Markle told Winfrey rumors she made Middleton cry before her 2018 wedding weren’t true. In fact, the Duchess of Sussex says Middleton made her cry.) Reportedly, per Nicholl, the Duchess of Cambridge has “behind the scenes…tried really hard to be a peacemaker between William and Harry” and was close to Prince Harry at one point.

In the interview, Markle actually spoke highly of Middleton, calling her “a good person” and saying she apologized for the pre-wedding incident. Markle only brought it up to highlight the fact that what was reported in the tabloids was not correct, and the palace didn’t do anything to refute it. 

Meanwhile, Prince Harry and Prince William’s father, Prince Charles, is reportedly upset as well. “Royal author” Sarah Gristwood told Vanity Fair  Prince Charles is “in a state of despair” over the interview. But this despair, per Gristwood, is more about perception than love of family. Gristwood speculates that “just at a time when by and large Charles had started to look like a more popular king than one would have guessed, here’s a major blow to his reputation. That his son felt let down by him. It’s hard to know if Harry is aware of the damage this has done. Did he actually intend to cast this damaging light on his father and his family? We don’t know.” 

Kate Middleton and Prince William have been riding the royal train this week in a three-day tour of England, Scotland, and Wales. Along the way, they’ve been stopping to visit essential workers and thank them for their tireless work during the coronavirus pandemic. 

One of those stops, the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, held special meaning because it also happens to be the place where Kate Middleton was born in 1982. 

“Thank you NHS ? •At the Royal Berkshire Hospital The Duke and Duchess thanked nurses for their tireless work during the pandemic,” the couple’s official Instagram said about the visit. “Among those that The Duke and Duchess met was Lead Nurse Rafael Fernandes, designer of a special badge funded by @nhscharitiestogether to mark the 2020 Year of the Nurse and Midwife.”

During another stop at Cardiff Castle in Wales, the duke and duchess chatted with students about what life has been like during the pandemic, while also sipping hot cocoa and roasting marshmallows. “William was too busy talking to us and managed to burn his and Kate got a bit stuck on her glove, and they were making fun of each other, which was nice to see,” a student named Lily Faulkner told People. 

“They really bounce off each other well. They’re a really friendly couple,” Shahzeb Akhtar, another student, added. 

Middleton and Prince William ended their tour with a special royal reunion, meeting up with Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Duchess Camilla, Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and his wife, Sophie, at Windsor Castle. 

According to Vanity Fair, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip will be spending Christmas at Windsor this year instead of Sandringham, where we would typically see various members of the royal family heading to church. The Cambridges’ plans are not yet known, but we’re sure Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are psyched to open presents no matter where they’re spending the holiday.
