Grimes and her 16-month-old son, X Æ A-Xii, are on a first-name basis.

In a new Vogue video following the musician getting ready for the 2021 Met Gala, Grimes—whose full name is Claire Elise Boucher—revealed that she doesn’t identify with the title “mom” and she believes her son can sense her “distaste” for the word.

“I think having a baby was a big rebirth for me, like artistically,” she said in the video, per People. “Being a mother feels weird to say. For some reason, I don’t identify with that word. Which is also really weird because X, he says ‘Claire,’ but he doesn’t say ‘mama.’ Which is so… I’m like, ‘How are you…?’ Like, maybe he can sense my distaste for the word ‘mother.'”

Grimes added, “I don’t even know why I have a distaste for [the word] because I respect … I just, I don’t, I can’t identify with it, weirdly.”

Grimes and her billionaire boyfriend Elon Musk welcomed their first child together in early May 2020. Initially, their son’s name was announced as  X Æ A-12, but it was quickly changed to X Æ A-Xii in accordance with California law. “Roman numerals. Looks better tbh,” Grimes wrote on Instagram later that month. 

Though Grimes refers to her son as “X” throughout the Vogue video, Musk revealed the full pronunciation on a podcast with Joe Rogan. “It’s just X, the letter X. And then the Æ is, like, pronounced ‘ash.’ And then A-12 is my contribution,” he said. “Archangel-12, the precursor to the SR-71, coolest plane ever.”

When X was first born, Grimes broke down the meaning of her son’s name in a tweet: “•X, the unknown variable •Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence) •A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent + (A=Archangel, my favorite song) (metal rat).”

Zoë Kravitz is not looking for styling advice from Instagram critics.

As you probably saw, Kravitz wore a stunning Saint Laurent dress made up of crystals to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala on September 13. The Batman star posted photos of the major Met gala moment to Instagram later in the week because why wouldn’t she? She looked amazing.

Unfortunately, when you reach a certain following on social media, the comments section can often be filled with unsolicited criticism and advice. “I don’t understand why they go practically naked,” one person commented, per a screenshot by the account Comments by Celebs. “She’s gorgeous. Why does she feel the need to wear a dress like this?”

Kravitz wasn’t phased. “Being uncomfortable with the human body is colonization/brainwashing,” the actor replied. “It’s just a body. We all got em.”

Zoë Kravitz doesn’t exactly have time to worry about haters on the internet. Aside from her various projects like The Batman and her directorial debut, Pussy Island, Kravitz has reportedly been in the throes of a romance with actor Channing Tatum. 

The rumors began picking up steam in August after the pair were repeatedly spotted together. This comes after Tatum took on the starring role in her upcoming film. “Chan was my first choice, the one I thought of when I wrote this character,” Kravitz told Deadline in June. “I just knew from Magic Mike and his live shows, I got the sense he’s a true feminist and I wanted to collaborate with someone who was clearly interested in exploring this subject matter.”

New reports from the Met gala after-party only added fuel to the fire. After leaving the Met gala together, the pair reportedly headed straight to the Cincoro Tequila party hosted by Alicia Keys. According to an insider speaking to People, they “did not take their hands off of each other.”

Kim Kardashian set the internet ablaze with her face-covering Balenciaga outfit at the 2021 Met gala. But did you notice she was accompanied by a man on the carpet who also had his face covered?

It was a couples outfit, for sure, which is why fans thought the man behind the mask was Kardashian’s estranged husband, Kanye West. “Kim and Kanye with the matching fits at the #MetGala,” one West fan account tweeted. 

“KANYE AND KIM KARDASHIAN ARE UP TO SOMETHING AND I DONT KNOW WHAT #MetGala2021,” someone else tweeted when they saw photos of what appeared to be West and Kardashian in matching face-covering outfits. 

The theory that West was Kardashian’s date only intensified when she changed her Instagram avi to a black circle, which matches West’s. The cover of his latest album, Donda, is just a black square. No words, no photos, no nothing—so was this Met gala look their IRL representation of that?

Well, not exactly. While it’s very possible Kardashian drew from Donda as inspiration for her look, the masked man next to her is not West. According to E! News it was Demna Gvasalia, the creative director of Balenciaga. Kardashian also revealed his identity on Instagram Story.

A source told E! that West didn’t attend the Met gala this year at all; however, “his presence [was] felt on the carpet.”

“It was [West] who introduced Kim to Demna and was instrumental in the newly formed relationship between her and Balenciaga,” the source said. “This look on Kim is like a new subculture and fashion statement. No logo, no face, but everyone knows it’s her.”

The source continued, “Kanye gave her the courage to push creativity and people’s imagination through art. It’s the ultimate confidence.”

There you have it, folks. Mystery solved. Now, I just have one question: How did Kim Kardashian see anything through that face mask? 

We have some rumored info on the inspiration for Kim Kardashian’s jaw-dropping Met gala look. ICYMI, Kardashian showed up to the 2021 Met gala in a Balenciaga ensemble covering every inch of her body—including her face. And this may be the reason.

A source told Page Six Kardashian wanted to make a “new subculture and fashion statement” with her outfit, and that her (reportedly) estranged husband Kanye West was part of the inspiration. 

“There’s no logo, no face, but everyone knows it’s her,” the source said. “Kanye gave her the courage to push creativity and people’s imagination through art. It’s the ultimate confidence.”

The look’s silhouette is reminiscent of the wedding gown and veil Kardashian wore to promote West’s new album Donda at an August 26 listening party. The re-creation of their 2014 wedding sparked major reconciliation rumors. 

It looks like Kardashian may have been teasing this incognito look for a few days now. She posted photos of herself in a separate face-covering outfit to Instagram on September 12.

The 2021 Met gala is one of the first major events Kim Kardashian has attended since her breakup with Kanye West became public. She hasn’t given any interviews about what happened, but she talked about the split on the final season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. 

“He deserves someone that can go support his every move and go follow him all over the place and move to Wyoming,” she said in an episode, wiping her tears. “I can’t do that…. I feel like a fucking failure that it’s, like, a third fucking marriage. I feel like a fucking loser. But I can’t even think about that. I want to be happy.” 

So will this be the last face-covering outfit Kardashian wears? Or have we kicked off a new era? Only time will tell.

The Fenty mogul was the last celebrity to arrive at the 2021 Met gala, and her outfit was well worth the wait. She and boyfriend A$AP Rocky hit the Met gala carpet is drastically different looks; she opted for an all-black ensemble by Balenciaga, while he went for a multicolored number by Eli Russell Linnetz.

Rihanna, of course, is no stranger to the Met gala. Her 2015 Guo Pei dress is legendary, and she was one of the co-chairs for the 2018 gala, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” This year’s theme is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” a.k.a a celebration of American fashion. 

“I’ve been really impressed by American designers’ responses to the social and political climate, particularly around issues of body inclusivity and gender fluidity, and I’m just finding their work very, very self-reflective,” Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in charge of the Costume Institute, told Vogue. “I really do believe that American fashion is undergoing a renaissance. I think young designers in particular are at the vanguard of discussions about diversity and inclusion, as well as sustainability and transparency, much more so than their European counterparts, maybe with the exception of the English designers.”

But back to Rihanna and A$AP Rocky. The rapper opened up about his relationship with RiRi to GQ in May, calling the pop icon “the love of my life” and “my lady.” He said being in a relationship is “so much better” than the single life. “So much better when you got the One,” he said. “She [Rihanna] amounts to probably, like, a million of the other ones. I think when you know, you know. She’s the One.”

I hope these two have a blast inside the gala.

And the award for most shocking 2021 Met gala look goes to Kim Kardashian. 

The beauty mogul showed up in a jaw-dropping, all-black Balenciaga look. The gag? Her entire face was covered. Like, her whole face.

The 2021 Met gala is one of the first big events Kim Kardashian has attended since her split from Kanye West became public. She hasn’t given any interviews about what happened, but she talked about the breakup on the last season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Soon, both Caitlyn Jenner and Kris Jenner gave statements about it. “I think it’s always going to be hard anytime, you know, there’s a lot of kids,” Kris said on The Kyle & Jackie O Show on March 18, according to Us Weekly. “The good thing about our family is that we are there for each other and supportive and we love each other very, very much, so all I want is for those two kids to be happy. And I want the kids to be happy. That’s the goal.”

Meanwhile, Caitlyn told Access Hollywood, ““I love Kimberly, Honestly, I love Kanye. I have had a very good relationship with Kanye. I wish them both nothing but the best. But as far as speaking about that, that is their story to tell, not mine. And I think you might learn some things in the final episode [of KUWTK], I wouldn’t be surprised—although I haven’t seen the show, but I do remember shooting scenes. And yeah, I think it should be pretty interesting.”

Hot off her appearance at the VMAs, Simone Biles just made her Met ball debut on the Met gala 2021 red carpet. And it was quite the entrance. 

The gymnast’s silver train was so massive that it had to be carried up the steps by a team of six men (yes, really). Biles described her AREA x Athleta dress, which consists of a black bodysuit with star details and the aforementioned massive train, as having “flexibility from mat to Met.” She also revealed that it weighs a whopping 88 pounds. 

The look was a custom collaboration between Area and Athleta, inspired by the Olympian’s record-breaking career. Glamour is told the design was meant to capture “the intersection where performance, strength, and beauty meet.” In honor of Biles and her look at the Met gala, Athleta is also donating $50,000 to The Power of She Fund.

The stars represent power and beauty on a natural level, just like Simone does.”

This has been a nonstop week for Gigi Hadid. The supermodel has walked in several shows for New York Fashion Week, and now she’s at the Met gala. Sadly, she wasn’t accompanied by boyfriend Zayn Malik. My guess is he’s at home babysitting Khai, the daughter he and Hadid welcomed in September 2020. She confirmed her pregnancy in April 2020 after the news leaked.

“Obviously, you know, we wish we could’ve announced it on our own terms, but we’re very excited and happy and grateful for everyone’s well-wishes and support, so…,” Hadid said at the time on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “I’m trying [to be present for every part of it]. Especially during this time, it’s a nice silver lining to be able to be home and together and really experience it.”

Because Gigi Hadid was very present during her pregnancy, she didn’t share much of it on social media. “I have been taking a lot of pictures of my bump and sending it to friends and family, and it’s been really cute and exciting…. I’m trying to document it well, because I’ve heard a lot of people say, ‘Make sure you don’t miss it,’” she said on Instagram Live. “And I will be sharing stuff like that in the future. I just am not rushed to do it, and I feel like right now I just want to experience it…. I just don’t want to worry about waking up every day during my pregnancy and, like, worry about having to look cute or post something.” 

Billie Eilish just hit the 2021 Met gala carpet looking like if Marilyn Monroe were a Disney princess. Seriously, her look is absolutely stunning. 

The 19-year-old pop star turned heads and made jaws drop in a peach-colored gown with a hoop skirt and massive train. Her short blonde hair was giving classic Hollywood—in fact, the whole look was. Check it out for yourself, below. I’m speechless. 

The look is by Oscar de la Renta, and Eilish said the inspiration was “holiday Barbie.” “It just was time,” she revealed during the Met gala live stream. “It was time for this, and I feel like I’ve grown so much in the last few years…I was just scared and didn’t feel comfortable in my skin, and I feel like I finally [do now]. It was time. ” 

Billie Eilish has really stepped into her own this year. A few months ago, she did a corset photo shoot for British Vogue and said she’s taking her “power back.”

“It’s all about what makes you feel good,” she said. “If you want to get surgery, go get surgery. If you want to wear a dress that somebody thinks that you look too big wearing, fuck it—if you feel like you look good, you look good.”

She added, “Suddenly you’re a hypocrite if you want to show your skin, and you’re easy and you’re a slut and you’re a whore. If I am, then I’m proud. Me and all the girls are hos, and fuck it, y’know? Let’s turn it around and be empowered in that. Showing your body and showing your skin—or not—should not take any respect away from you.”

Poet Amanda Gorman is perhaps best known for radiating a bright light of hope in a dark time. So it’s fitting that the 23-year-old, who captivated America with her reading at the Biden-Harris presidential inauguration, should show up at the 2021 Met gala in a look that heavily references the Statue of Liberty. 

Gorman, a past Glamour College Woman of the Year, is a co-chair of the 2021 gala along with an elite Gen-Z clique comprised of Timothée Chalamet, Naomi Osaka, and Billie Eilish. The evening’s theme is “In America.” And on the red carpet on Monday night, Gorman told host Keke Palmer that with her look she “wanted to lean into the spirit of the Statue of Liberty.” 

It’s fitting—the statue is of a goddess who stands as a symbol for radically welcoming the stranger. “Tonight’s theme, for me I really looked at it as a night where we can come together as a country and celebrate one of the things that makes us so beautiful, which is our diversity,” she told E! News. 

“Fashion is its own form of language, its own form of rhetoric,” Gorman told Palmer. She added that to her, style is about “Walking in my truth in a Black woman.” Here are some of the references in her outfit—styled by Jason Bolden—that you may have missed.

The gown 

Gorman’s blue gown, with its tulle train and sparkling detail, is designed by Vera Wang. It reportedly includes 3,000 hand-sewn crystals. The layers on the dress evoke the thick draping in the copper of the roman-style tunic worn by the Statue of Liberty. The giant statue, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was gifted to the United States by France in the 1880s. Its position in New York harbor means that it has been the first American landmark that immigrants see as they enter American waters—a beacon of hope, and a symbol that true freedom in America always means welcoming new citizens. 

In her inaugural poem, Gorman used several phrases that bring the statue to mind. She spoke of “a sea we must wade” and “my bronze-pounded chest,” and called the day “aflame.” 

The hair accessories 

Gorman’s hair for the Met gala was set with silver, leaf-shaped head pieces—laurels, like the laurel wreaths worn by victorious greek athletes in ancient times. It is from those headpieces that we get the phrase “poet laureate,” and Gorman became America’s first every National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017. 

The clutch 

Gorman’s clutch is shaped like a book and glittery gold letters spell out the phrase, “Give me your tired.” It’s a reference to the poem inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty, “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus. In the poem, Lazarus speaks from the perspective of the statue, crying out, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

This quote has come to represent, for activists and humanitarians, the soul of the American vision—a vision of inclusivity, where immigrants, refugees, and needy people are welcomed and treasured. Perhaps Gorman alluded to the line in her inaugural address, when she said, “We lift our gazes not to what stands between us, but what stands before us.”
