Blue eyeshadow is like the hairspray of makeup—both are surprisingly versatile and can totally elevate a look, but over the years have garnered an unfair bad reputation thanks to their connection to beauty pageants and the ’80s as a whole. But for at least one of these products, it appears the tide may be turning.

Blue shadow had a major moment in the ’60s with creamy, Twiggy-inspired pastels, while in the ’80s, deeper shades were worn up to the brows. And of course, in the early 2000s, frosted baby blue shades reigned supreme. But then the look seemed to disappear from the map, and in the 2010s it was traded for warmer tones, as both Instagram makeup and no-makeup makeup looks soared. This year, following the 20-year pattern, it looks like blue lids are coming back, and makeup artists, celebrities, and cool girls are ready to give the shade another shot.

The shade has popped up on legit A-listers like J.Lo and TikTok megastars including Mikayla Nogueira, and as a limited shade offering in Violette_FR’s ultra-cool line. It also features prominently in this season of Euphoria, which, as we know from last season, has the power to set makeup trends for years to come.

It’s also been one of the more prominent beauty trends at New York Fashion week, cutting through the usual minimal makeup looks that are usually expected for the city. Most notably, it showed up as a bold, matte powder blue shadow paired with a classic wing at Christian Siriano. “There was a lot of bright cobalt blue in the collection, and Christian wanted us to mirror that on the eyes,” says Sofia Tilbury, who led the makeup for the show. “We got creative, blending the metallic end of the Charlotte Tilbury Super Blue Duo Liner with Magic Away Concealer in shade 1, sweeping it over the lids. We finished with a thick winged liner, brushed-up, fluffy brows and a nude pink lip with a satin finish.”

It also popped up at Kim Shui, this time in a dramatic ’80s sweep up to the brow bone with a defined inner corner. Perhaps the easiest version of the shade showed up at Bronx and Blanco and Maryam Nassir Zadeh. Both featured a wash of denim blue across the eyes, in both a shimmer and matte finish, respectively.

So why are people suddenly flocking to blue eyeshadow? The answer, as it turns out, is the same as most major beauty trends we’ve been seeing pop over the past few years: nostalgia. “There’s a huge nod in fashion back to Y2K with a touch of the ’60s vibe and a dash of psychedelic,” says Eddie Duyos, Make Up for Ever’s senior manager of pro education. “The late-’60s aesthetic inspires that vintage look of blue color wash across the lids that created a bold statement on the eyes while downplaying the other features. Color is exciting and eyes continue to be the focal point for the season as people are looking to the past for creative ways to play up their makeup.”

When it comes to actually wearing the shade, there are tons of ways to get in on the trend in a modern way. Ease into it by swapping your black liner for a rich navy or cobalt shade. A sheer wash of matte baby blue looks surprisingly fresh, as does a pop of teal in the inner corners paired with a jet-black mascara. Or try a deep blue shade all around your eye for a cool take on a classic smoky eye.

Sharon Chuter’s ‘Make It Black’ Campaign Is Back to Support Black Founders https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/sharon-chuters-make-it-black-campaign-is-back-to-support-black-founders.html Thu, 03 Feb 2022 20:27:35 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/sharon-chuters-make-it-black-campaign-is-back-to-support-black-founders.html [ad_1]

Sharon Chuter keeps changing the beauty world. After launching her own beauty brand, Uoma Beauty, in 2018, she started the Pull Up or Shut Up initiative in the summer of 2020, challenging brands to put their money where their mouth is in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement.  She kept the movement going with her Make It Black campaign during last year’s Black History Month, and this year she’s doing it yet again.

Starting February 3, the campaign is back. Make It Black has partnered with eight brands and two retailers to reimagine the their best-selling products in sleek, all-black packaging. These limited-edition products from UOMA Beauty, E.L.F. Cosmetics, MAC Cosmetics, Mented, Morphe, Flower Beauty, Ulta Beauty, Ipsy and BoxyCharm will be available during all of Black History Month at Ulta, as well as the brands’ own channels.

“I hope it shows everyone who sees these products the transformative power of black,” Chuter told Glamour last year about the project. “When we say black is beautiful, it’s not just something every Black person uses to console themselves. Black indeed is truly beautiful. When you take something that was any other color and turn it black, you know what it looks like: It instantly looks luxurious. It instantly looks beautiful. Absolutely sleek. Absolutely chic.”

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Chuter is taking it a step above optics—100% of profits from all participating brands will be going to the Pull Up for Change Impact Fund, which provides capital to emerging Black founders, who are historically underfunded. Last year the fund was able to raise over $400,000, which was deployed as grants to eight female founders.

“As a Black Female founder, I understand, first-hand, the struggles of raising capital or accessing funding,” Chuter said in a statement. “In fact, I am one of only 93 Black women in the history of America who have raised over $1M for start-ups. On the other hand, the average white male receives $2.1M to fund their start-ups. We have a long way to go to create true economic equality, and there is no equality without equity. This is where I am proud to play a small part in supporting other Black female founders to make their dreams a reality, and to truly get the seat at the table that they very well deserve.”

Cher Has Never Been Afraid to Break the Rules https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/cher-has-never-been-afraid-to-break-the-rules.html Thu, 06 Jan 2022 18:06:24 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/cher-has-never-been-afraid-to-break-the-rules.html [ad_1]

The word “icon” gets tossed around a lot these days, but if there’s someone truly worthy of the title, it’s Cher. The legendary singer and actor has been one of our premier entertainers since the ’60s, and has been considered a beauty icon for just as long. There’s no denying her signature jet black hair and glittering eye makeup are just as influential as her pioneering use of autotune.

We currently appreciate Cher’s beauty looks for her boldness and glamour, but that hasn’t always been the case. According to Cher, her makeup and outfits were misunderstood for years, and people looked at her like she was crazy. The one place where she always felt understood was the MAC makeup counter.

“I’ve had a very, very long relationship with MAC,” Cher tells Glamour. “The first time I ever saw MAC, I just remember looking at everything because it’s a lot, it’s an eye-full. And I thought, this is like a candy store for makeup. I was fascinated, too, by the range of colors because it was very difficult to find at the time. I mean, I remember in the ’60s, I was making eye makeup on a double boiler. So, I guess for people who were into makeup, it was like paint by the numbers.”

It only makes sense that she’s partnered with the brand for a new campaign, alongside Gen Z icon, Saweetie.  In honor of the campaign, we caught up with Cher for a round of Glamour’s Big Beauty Questions. Read on for her must-have products, thoughts on beauty standards, and why her mom will always be her biggest inspiration.

Glamour: What’s one beauty rule you swear by?

Cher: I don’t swear by any rules, because think that it cuts down on the creativity. When I started, everyone thought that my makeup was crazy. And I thought it was beautiful. I think that you just limit yourself when you think about rules. I don’t think girls do today, because there’s such a wide range of what we now think of this beauty. Limitations don’t seem to go anymore.

Is there a beauty rule that you think is B.S.?

I think all of them are. You know why? Because there should not be… When you’re trying to be creative, if you’re writing a song or you’re acting, or whatever, you don’t put rules on creativity. It doesn’t work.

Cher in 1974.

Michael Ochs Archives/Getty

What is the best beauty advice you’ve ever gotten?

I didn’t get advice. I lived in a house full of women who were models and all I did was watch them. I watched my mother and her friends put on makeup every day. They each had a mirror, they all had a spot in the dining room, which had no table. Everyone would put their mirror up, so they were facing the light and put their makeup on. That’s basically how I started. And then, I did this thing that I thought was beautiful, which was not accepted at the time. But, sometimes you’re ahead of it. When I started, people were nervous about following certain rules. Like, if you were a certain age, you had to cut your hair and pick cotton leather shoes. A bunch of bullshit rules that I never understood.

How did you get the confidence to break those rules?

I didn’t know how not to. I didn’t think of them. What I thought was, these things don’t apply to me. Because dressing differently, Sonny and I looked crazy to a lot of people. They didn’t like us. They had a visceral reaction because we looked so different. You have to go back and look at our early pictures because no one looked like us.

I’ve seen them. They’re iconic. Well, now you’re on every mood board. So, it just goes to show that you always knew.

Well, I didn’t always know. I always tried.

Sonny & Cher in 1965.

Silver Screen Collection/Getty

Let’s say you can only use three beauty products for the rest of your life, what are they and why?

Well, that’s not going to happen. I need four, okay? If we’re going to continue this relationship, you need to give me four.

I will bend the rules for you.

So, I need eyebrow pencil. Oh God, I could have used so many more. All right, I need an eyebrow pencil, I need blush, I need lipstick, and an eyelash curler. Because I think that, first of all, you have to frame your face with your eyebrows. And my mom always said, “If you were on a desert island, make sure you have an eyelash curler.” I mean, lipstick I think, is a necessity. Even if you blot your lipstick, so it’s faint, you still need that color.

What’s your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?

I have very few moments. I like listening to audio books, and I like doing my meditation. But, I like hanging down and just listening to these books. And I used to read like crazy, but I enjoy being read to. The best book I’ve listened to lately is a book about Clementine Churchill. And it just shows that without her, we probably would all be speaking German.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

If you could change one thing about beauty standards, what would you want to change?

I don’t feel there should be beauty standards. I just don’t like it. I remember when there were really harsh ones. Richard Alleman [the actor] who I love, told me, “You’ll never be on the cover of Vogue,” And I said, “Well, why?” He said, “Because you have to have blonde hair and blue eyes. Blonde hair and brown eyes. Dark hair and blue eyes. If you have black hair and brown eyes, you’ll never be on the cover.” And then one day, I was. It was by accident.

Who are the women who are inspiring you the most right now?

Well, I’m OG. My mom still inspires me because she’s 95, and she’s still really beautiful. All my girlfriends hate her because she has this perfect skin and a mane of hair. My mom has a mane and it’s ridiculous. We all just look at her. She’s my go-to. And you know what? I do think Saweetie’s beautiful. I was so fascinated by her fingernails. But, she is absolutely beautiful, and a positive young girl. I think she would be an inspiration to me.

Selena Gomez Kicks Off the New Year With Some Y2K Glam https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/selena-gomez-kicks-off-the-new-year-with-some-y2k-glam.html Wed, 05 Jan 2022 15:26:48 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/selena-gomez-kicks-off-the-new-year-with-some-y2k-glam.html [ad_1]

It may be 2022, but in the beauty world, cues pulled from 2002 continue to find favor. Should you have any doubts that Y2K-era trends are still worthy of note, we recommend making your way to Hung Vanngo’s Instagram: The makeup artist shared a snap of Selena Gomez this morning featuring a beauty look that exuded vibes of decades past

Framed by Gomez’s sleek brunette bob—inward-styled ends and subtle mahogany highlights aiding in the throwback effect—a graphic cat eye became a bit less expected when smudged to achieve a slightly blurred finish. Next, an overlined lip painted in a brickish brown came with a generous swipe of gloss, offering a perfect juxtaposition to Gomez’s matte complexion.

Precise power brows, washes of blush and bronzer, and a hefty dose of attitude proved that, when executed correctly, some details span time and place. Though it looks as if the next trendscape may find us revisiting scene-y Tumblr times, the early-aughts revival has truly transmuted modern beauty for the better.

Hailey Bieber’s Deep Green Eyeliner Is Party Season Goals https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/hailey-biebers-deep-green-eyeliner-is-party-season-goals.html Wed, 15 Dec 2021 17:10:44 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/hailey-biebers-deep-green-eyeliner-is-party-season-goals.html [ad_1]

Christmas parties may be being cancelled, but even Omicron can’t stop a stellar festive beauty look. Proving this point is Hailey Bieber, who recently enjoyed a short stay in London during which she showed off his-and-hers couple style with Justin and, more importantly, paid a visit to make-up artist Nikki Wolff.

Wolff, who is the woman to see for dreamy, soft glam make up, created a look that nodded to the festive season, without being too obvious. “Hailey wanted something fun and pretty, but comfortable – and she wanted to play around with color,” Wolff tells Vogue. “So I lined her eyes with a green pencil liner and then used an iridescent eyeshadow on her eyes – in the middle and inner corners – to create a multidimensional effect.” For a similar hue, look to Nars’s High-Pigment Longwear Eyeliner in Grafton Street.

The result is a perfect example of why experimenting with color around your eyes isn’t something to shy away from. Whether it’s forest green or a deep indigo, shades like this effortlessly enhance eye color, and during party season, lend an effect that is simultaneously fun and understated.

“To keep it flattering, add a warm eyeshadow tone – something peachy or pinky – into the eye socket,” advises Wolff. “It keeps the look flattering by tying it all together.” For that fluttery fan of lashes, Wolff applied individual lashes (her own collection with Sweed Lashes is second to none), and lots of mascara to define the eyes, but still keep it looking natural. “And then for the lips, Hailey’s choice was a muted, browny nude,” she adds.

Festive beauty inspo? Sorted.

Rihanna Just Posted the Most Intense Red Eyeliner Look https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/rihanna-just-posted-the-most-intense-red-eyeliner-look.html Tue, 23 Nov 2021 22:16:51 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/rihanna-just-posted-the-most-intense-red-eyeliner-look.html [ad_1]

Red season isn’t just for Swifties, apparently.

Rihanna recently showed followers an entirely new way to rock the color, posting a video of herself applying bright red liner to her lower waterline. The result? A reverse cat eye only she can pull off.

In the quick clip, posted to her Instagram Stories, the Fenty founder is already wearing a creamy cherry shade along her bottom lashes—into her crease and with a slight wing—leaving the top of her eyelids mostly bare. She then takes an eye pencil (we’re almost certain it’s the Fenty Beauty Flypencil Longwear in Cherry Punk) and emphasizes the line, making sure to look away so she doesn’t tear up. Such a pro.

Instagram:@badgalriri

Now, we would never discourage you from trying something out-there with your makeup. It’s your face; do what you want, and have fun! But Rihanna makes even the most intense looks seem effortless, so don’t be discouraged if this takes you a few tries. Red eyeliner is…let’s just say, eccentric.

Tip: Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before you rock this look. If your eyes are bleary or pink, people might think you have some kind of infection. You’ll notice Rih’s eyes here look super well rested, and can I just say: Her eyebrows have never looked more perfect.

If you don’t feel quite up to the challenge of hand-drawing your own swoosh, you might take a cue from Hailey Bieber, who over the summer wore holographic eyeliner stickers for some Euphoria-level glam. Just as eye-catching but with none of the risk (and none of the cleanup).

We’ve also rounded up the best waterproof, smudge-proof eyeliners for all-day wear, because with masks still being worn in many public indoor locations (safety first!), it’s all the more important to give the top half of your face a perfect beat.

23 Thanksgiving Makeup Ideas That Pair Well With Pumpkin Pie https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/23-thanksgiving-makeup-ideas-that-pair-well-with-pumpkin-pie.html Tue, 26 Oct 2021 15:41:00 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/23-thanksgiving-makeup-ideas-that-pair-well-with-pumpkin-pie.html [ad_1]

Everyone has their holiday traditions, but consider adding some Thanksgiving makeup to your rituals this year. From keeping it casual at Friendsgiving to feasting with the entire fam, Thanksgiving is a great excuse to go all out with color and shimmer. Because everyone’s idea of the holiday looks a little different, there’s tons of room to play when it comes to Thanksgiving makeup ideas, but a good place to start is warm tones that mirror the falling leaves—or are inspired by Thanksgiving staples like cranberry sauce and squash. Our favorite looks play on fall makeup trends like kitten eyeliner and bold lips, but we’ve got options for every style and event. Scroll on for the coolest Thanksgiving makeup ideas to try this year and get ready to screenshot. (Be sure to check out the best Thanksgiving nail designs to try as well).

All products featured on Glamour are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

1. Natural Glow

For a more laid-back celebration, you can’t go wrong with the basics. A touch of neutral shadow, a flush of blush, and some fluffy lashes are all you need to look selfie-ready. Finish it off with a balmy nude lipstick like Violette FR’s Bisou Balm for easy reapplication post-turkey.

2. Orange Crush

A bold eye not only looks amazing, but also less maintenance than a bright lip when you’ll be in the presence of pie. A wash of burnt orange shadow like Urban Decay’s Wild One is the perfect fall vibe.

3. Graphic Liner

Graphic liner in an autumnal shade like chocolate or bronze elevates even your coziest outfit. Start by using a pencil liner to trace your shape, and go over with a liquid liner to amp up the drama. It may look tricky, but if you work slowly and keep plenty of cotton swabs and micellar water on hand, you should get it down.

4. Dusty Rose Flush

Using the same shade across eyes, lips, and cheeks is the easiest way to tie a look together—plus a pretty pink shade wakes up your whole face. If you want to take it a step further, a sharp wing and some glossy lips adds even more intensity.

5. Fall Glam

You can never go wrong with a crisp cat eye and Thanksgiving is no exception. A little bronze shadow and a pumpkin-inspired lipstick shade really capitalize on the fall feelings.

6. Bronze Smoke

Shimmering bronze shadow is the epitome of soft-glam that looks at home just about anywhere. Try the Patrick Ta Major Dimension eyeshadow palette for a similar look.

7.  Rosy Kiss

A lip-forward look is a little risky for dinner makeup, but the results are totally worth it. For a similar vibe as above, apply a few layers of a rosy stain like the Dior Addict Lip Tattoo, blotting with a tissue in between for maximum staying power. A mini wing and plenty of mascara finishes things off.

8. Classic Cat Eye

Sometimes all you need is a sharp winged liner and you’re good to go. (Check out some of our favorite waterproof eyeliners for a wing that won’t budge all day long.)

9. Pop of Color

Brighten up your go-to beige base with a bright pop of color in your inner corners. Yellow or orange (try Too Faced’s Light My Fire palette) is an unexpected choice that looks so cool.

10. Red Lip

For a formal occasion (or if you’re just in the mood to stunt), there’s nothing like a classic red lip. Just be sure to opt for a liquid formula to make sure it stays put through every course.

11. Jewel Tones

A smudge of royal purple adds a cool pop to your standard bronze smoke. Try Makeup By Mario’s Master Metallics palette for everything you need in one palette.

12. Subtle Shimmer

A wash of terracota shimmer is so pretty and wearable—it’s one of our favorite easy makeup looks. Just use your finger to pat on a warm brown shade like Glossier Monochromes in Mesa and slick on some mascara.

13. Pink Stain

Popsicle lips are unexpectedly pretty in the chilly weather, and a flushed stain is such a pretty way to wear a bold shade like hot pink (and to ensure it stays put). Try Peripera Ink Velvet Lip Tints, which come in a range of shades and do. not. move.

14. Rosy Flush

Amp up that whole “just got in from the cold” thing with a flush of cool pink blush across your cheeks and nose. Fluffy lashes and a tinted lip balm complete the look.

15. Chocolate Shimmer

Shades of brown are perfect for fall, and they work beautifully across your eyes, lips, and cheeks. We love the darker lipliner for some added dimension.

16. ’90s Glam

If you’re in the mood for some drama, a ’90s supermodel beat is the answer. Go for matte shades of brown, nude lipstick, and some major lashes to unleash your inner Cindy.

17. Cranberry Lips

A deep berry shade is so gorgeous and totally on-theme. The secret to wearing a lipstick this dark is to make sure to exfoliate your lips beforehand to get the smoothest application.

18. Pumpkin Spice

Warm chocolate eyes and a ginger spice lip are a match made in heaven.

19. Soft Liner

Opt for a pencil liner over a liquid for a softer approach to a classic cat eye. After sketching on your wing, use a smudger brush to blur it our for a pretty, diffused effect. Paired with soft pink eyes, cheeks, and lips, it looks so dreamy.

20. Monotone

For a high-impact look with truly zero effort, match your eyeshadow and lipstick to your outfit. It may sound like a lot, but if you use just a smudge of color, it can be surprisingly effortless.

21. Hot Pink Lips

A hot pink lipstick may be the last place your brain goes when you hear “Thanksgiving,” but that’s exactly what makes it so cool. Though it shines on its own, make it pop even more with some baby wings and long lashes.

22. Sage Green

If you’re not into orange, sage green is another pretty option for a wash of color. It’s gorgeous on everyone, but will really make green or brown eyes pop—especially when paired with a great mascara.

23. Purple Lids

Or, for something more daring, dip your toe into a rich purple. Paired with clear gloss, it’s the perfect amount of glam.

The Coolest Winter Makeup Looks to Try This Year https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/the-coolest-winter-makeup-looks-to-try-this-year.html Fri, 08 Oct 2021 18:30:00 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/the-coolest-winter-makeup-looks-to-try-this-year.html [ad_1]

With an endless slog of chilly weather right around the corner, at least there’s one thing to look forward to: winter makeup looks. While spring and summer are all about light-as-air makeup, the dropping temps call for looks that up the drama and feel a little more substantial, like your favorite sweater. And if the pandemic has streamlined your daily makeup routine, the upcoming holiday season (no matter how you’re celebrating this year) will give you at least a few excuses to bust out the glittery palettes and dark lipsticks that have been collecting dust in your vanity.
