Welcome to Stuff We Want, our comprehensive roundup of the best beauty products we tried each month. From undisputed favorites to brand-new releases, these are the things our editors loved throughout the month of June.

It almost feels surreal to say but it’s summer, finally. And now that we’re able to show body and face, we’ve taken every opportunity to test out the products that are going to refresh and give our skin that extra pop that’ll carry through to the end of the season.

After more than a year of staying indoors, we’re all trying to take in as much of this sun as we can so we’ll keep it brief. Ahead you’ll find the lipsticks that gave our pouts a juicy wash of color along with a heavy dose of y2K nostalgia, hair cream that brought an editor’s dehydrated curls back to life, and some honestly cool sunscreens that make us think we’ve entered a new era of UV coverage that’s, dare we say, fun?

The Best Tips for Greasy Hair https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/the-best-tips-for-greasy-hair.html Wed, 28 Apr 2021 13:57:29 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/the-best-tips-for-greasy-hair.html [ad_1]

For most of us, greasy hair is inevitable at some point or another. But—as inconvenient as it can be, especially on days where you have no time to hit the shower—it’s a somewhat misunderstood issue.

Having an oily scalp isn’t in itself bad—natural oils actually protect your scalp from environmental damage—but there can be too much of a good thing, especially if you have fine or straight hair. Excess oil can make your hair feel limp, lifeless, and a little grimy, even if you do have time to shampoo every day.

Luckily there are a ton of easy fixes you can make that don’t involve tossing your hair into a ponytail (though that’s always a safe bet). We spoke to hairstylists about why you get oily hair in the first place, and the best tips to manage grease.

Why does my hair get greasy?

Just as with the skin on your face, the sebaceous glands on your scalp produce oil as a protective barrier, and to keep the skin from drying out. And just as with your face, some people simply produce more oil. “Everyone’s scalp is different,” says Lauren Grummel, a New York City hairstylist. “The amount of oil your scalp produces is generally based off genetics.”

If you’ve always had greasy hair, chances are it’s genetic. But if it’s a new change, it could be due to the products you’re using. Grummel says that overwashing your hair is also a common cause of a greasy scalp, as this can kick oil production into overdrive since your scalp is trying to make up for the lost oil.

It could also be a seasonal thing. “Twice a year you may be more prone to things like thinning, hair loss, static, or greasiness,” says celebrity hairstylist Laura Polko. “Be aware of these and adjust your products accordingly. More importantly, ride it out. It will pass.”

How to get rid of greasy hair

The obvious answer here is to wash your hair, but for those days when you can’t make it to the shower, Grummel says to reach for the dry shampoo. However, she says to use it only when you need to, as it can make oil worse in the long run.

“Dry shampoo can clog the pores on your scalp,” she says. “Just as we wouldn’t wear the same makeup on our face without washing it for days, we shouldn’t leave on and add styling  products to our hair for days and days. But dry shampoo is great if you know you’ll be washing it out the next day.”

You can also try washing your hair less. While this seems counterintuitive, it will actually slow oil production down in the long run. Start by washing every other day, slowly working your way to once or twice a week. While there may be an adjustment period, it will eventually level out.

The best shampoos for greasy hair

If a greasy scalp is a new problem, Polko recommends looking for keywords like clarifying and detoxifying on your shampoos. She also says to try a scalp scrub to banish product buildup. “It’s important to start at the scalp—you need a fresh scalp to keep hair healthy,” she says.

“Finding  the right shampoo and conditioner makes all the difference,” says Grummel. She suggests trying shampoos that are paraben- and sulfate-free, as they’re gentler on your hair (she loves  Act + Acre’s products for the scalp). She also recommends seeking out ingredients like tea tree oil, thyme extract, and rosemary extract, which balance oil production. “Witch Hazel is [another] known natural antiseptic that helps detoxify the hair and scalp. It also tightens the cuticle, adds radiance, and restores balance so that hair looks and feels soothed and softened.”

How to prevent greasy hair

To prevent a build-up of oil and product, Grummel recommends using a prewash like Kevin Murphy’s Maxi Wash once a week before your regular shampoo and conditioner for a deep cleaning. She also recommends applying your conditioner with your head tipped upside down, so you can really focus on the ends. “This will guarantee that conditioner won’t get on your roots, making your hair greasier.”

She also says to make sure you’re thoroughly washing your hair. “Sometimes two or even three shampoos are necessary, especially if you haven’t washed in a few days and have product build-up.” Once your hair is dry, Grummel recommends brushing with a boar-bristle brush like a Mason Pearson to make sure the oils from your scalp are evenly distributed.

Mason Pearson Handy Mixture Brush

Mizani Wonder Crown Scalp Foaming Pre-Cleanse

dpHUE Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

Finally,  you can always just work with what have.  “Don’t fight your hair’s natural oil, and avoid overusing dry shampoo to prevent your hair from becoming dependent on it,” says Polko. “Greasy hair is the best for a slicked back look. Consider a tight pony or bun, or a half-up hairstyle.” She likes to use a hair mask like NatureLab. Tokyo Perfect Repair Treatment Masque to slick back second- or third-day hair for extra moisture, or suggests using clips or headbands to hide any grease.

Kate Middleton Swears By This Styling Cream to Smooth Frizz https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/kate-middleton-swears-by-this-styling-cream-to-smooth-frizz.html Sun, 04 Apr 2021 17:14:23 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/kate-middleton-swears-by-this-styling-cream-to-smooth-frizz.html [ad_1]

There’s one thing that springs to mind when we think of Kate Middleton: her insanely bouncy blowout. Her signature locks will go down in history as some of the silkiest on record. We’ve been tirelessly attempting to achieve the same shine and volume since she started dating Prince William.

So, it was music to our ears when we found out that the Duchess of Cambridge uses a $26 hair product from one of our favorite beauty brands to smooth out frizz and flyaways. It hydrates hair, makes it more workable for optimum styling, and leaves it feeling smoother than ever. Interested?

The product in question is Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom—a non-greasy styling cream recommended for frizzy, dry, or damaged hair that helps to condition and soften.

Ahead of the royal visit to Norway and Sweden back in 2018, Kate Middleton’s hairstylist, Amanda Cook Tucker, shared a photo of the countless brushes, tools and cans of hair spray she was taking with her on the tour and this bad boy made the cut.

Getty Images

Best applied to damp hair after showering (you should rub a small amount of the product into your hands before gently working through the ends of your hair), the effective formula adds shine and makes hairstyling easier. It leaves hair smooth, hydrated, and conditioned—no matter your hair’s texture.

There are three main ingredients that work to achieve the above: hydrolyzed soy protein, hydrolyzed wheat protein, and jojoba oil. The first is a protein of vegetable origin, produced by the enzymatic hydrolysis of soya flour. It’s often used in skin-care products to smooth pores and minimize the appearance of roughness and wrinkles. It has a similar, smoothing effect on hair. The hydrolyzed wheat protein, also known as phyto peptides, is an ingredient that helps to condition and moisturize the hair. Lastly, jojoba oil is known for its nurturing and softening properties.

For best results, Kiehl’s recommends using the Creme with Silk Groom alongside its Amino Acid Shampoo–one of the best shampoos we’ve tried—and the Amino Acid Conditioner. Both products contain a beautiful blend of coconut oil, jojoba oil, and amino acids to strengthen hair and leave it looking glossier. Sold? Same.

Consider your hair royally silky.

Rihanna Is Reportedly Launching Fenty Hair Soon https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/rihanna-is-reportedly-launching-fenty-hair-soon.html Sat, 13 Mar 2021 18:45:12 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/rihanna-is-reportedly-launching-fenty-hair-soon.html [ad_1]

Thanks to the power of Rihanna and her respected teams, the Fenty name has more or less become a symbol of quality, inclusion, and marketability in the past few years. Although her luxury fashion label has sadly been discontinued for now, Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin still remain best-selling brands and unwavering staples among beauty fans. And, according to recent trademark filings, the beloved Fenty family might be getting a new member in the form of a hair-care brand.

According to new legal filings, Roraj Trade LLC, Rihanna’s company, has filed a new trademark application for “Fenty Hair.” And, as anyone would guess, that trademark would cover product categories such as hair care preparation, hair color, hair styling, straightening or relaxing, dandruff shampoo, and more.

Rihanna has yet to make any public statements about a new brand, nor have either of her existing beauty brands. Allure reached out to the PR firm that represents Fenty Beauty and Skin for more information. A representative told the publication that it does not have any information about a potential Fenty Hair brand to share at this time.

As we’ve witnessed in the past with other celebrity brands like those of Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez, and others, a trademark filing can and often does result in a brand or product launch once approved. And, given the amazing things Rihanna’s brands have gifted us over the years, a hair-care brand would certainly be a hit among fans and general consumers alike. We’ll share more details as information comes in, but all there’s left to do in the meantime is hope and pray.

Milestones should always be celebrated—and SkinStore, one of our go-to destinations for all things beauty, couldn’t agree more. The online retailer just kicked off the SkinStore Anniversary Sale of 2021, and it’s one of the biggest beauty sales of the year. To celebrate its 24th birthday (a ’90s child!), prices are being slashed across the board, with up to 50% off hundreds of cult-favorite skin, hair, and makeup products from now through March 23. That means you have a little under two weeks to spring-clean your top shelf and refill it with a bevy of supercharged serums, Glamour-approved facial tools, makeup essentials, and more.

As if it couldn’t get any better—SkinStore is also offering a free 24-piece beauty bag with a minimum spend of $200. The swag bag (valued at $388) is packed with minis and full-size products from top-rated brands like Sunday Riley, Dr. Loretta, and Ren. Essentially this means if you’re eyeing something that’s not on sale, your consolation prize is still pretty epic.

There’s a lot worth adding to cart from the SkinStore Anniversary Sale 2021, which is why we gave all the markdowns a first pass to find the deals actually worth your money. Hot Rollers Are Low-Key the Best Way to Curl Your Hair https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/hot-rollers-are-low-key-the-best-way-to-curl-your-hair.html Sat, 06 Feb 2021 00:04:00 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/hot-rollers-are-low-key-the-best-way-to-curl-your-hair.html [ad_1]

I never thought I’d find myself on the hunt for the best hot rollers, but if you’ve found yourself lost in a rabbit hole on TikTok or Instagram lately, you’ll know the old-school hairstyling staple is making come back.

To be honest, I don’t exactly know why I was so hesitant to try them. It makes sense a throwback tool would work perfectly for the voluminous ’90s hair and old-Hollywood hairstyles cycling back into fashion right now. But it’s so easy to get caught up in the endless stream of the newest best thing. What could hot curlers offer that a wand or no-heat hack couldn’t? They’re not nearly as compact as curling irons, and real talk: most of us probably grew up associating them with our grandmothers or Nick at Nite.

But it turns out hair rollers couldn’t be any easier to use. And once you get comfortable with them, they can be even more versatile than your go-to wand, since you can create curls, waves, and volume with the same set. They’re also great if you’re in a rush (though I rarely am anymore) since your hands are free for makeup, and they take way less time than any of the curling irons I’ve tried. Whenever I use an iron I end up with either floppy, loose waves or pageant-ready spirals, but hot rollers give me the perfect middle ground—every time. And sure, I also love feeling like Lady Gaga in the “Telephone” video while I wait for my hair to set.

Intrigued? Here’s everything you need to know about using them.

Who can use hot rollers?

Any hair type can use hot rollers, but they’re particularly helpful for fine hair that falls easily, since the curl has longer to set and you can get a little more volume. If you have naturally curly hair you can still use hot rollers, you’ll just need to blow your hair out first. They are also great for damaged or colored hair, since there’s no heat being directly applied to your hair.

What are the different types of hair rollers?

There are three major types of hair rollers: plastic ones with textured “grips,” velvet-wrapped, or foam rollers. Whichever type you use is totally your preference, but if you have fine hair you’ll probably want the plastic type since they help your hair stay in place better. Velvet-wrapped rollers are great for all textures, while foam rollers are extra gentle on damaged or dry hair.

How do you use hot rollers?

Be sure to follow the directions on whatever set you choose, but the basic premise is pretty simple. Make sure your hair is dry or mostly-dry, and then apply some heat protectant while you wait for your curlers to heat up. Once they’re ready, wrap a section of hair around the roller, and pin or clip it up. You can do your whole head in the same size and direction for a more “done” look, or alternate both for more natural-looking waves.

The amount of time you’ll want to leave them varies (again, check your directions here), but usually experts recommend leaving them in for around 12 minutes. Unroll, hit your curls with some hairspray or texturizer before finger-raking them out, and you’re good to go.

What are the best hot rollers?

Just like any other hair tool, there are a lot of options to sift through if you’re looking to invest in hot rollers. Which is why I pored through reviews and consulted with hairstylists to find what the best options are for a range of hair types, skill levels, and price points. Here’s what pros and shoppers alike swear by.

Best for beginners: Conair Compact Hairsetter

If you want to dip your toes into hot curlers, this is a great place to start. It’s only $20, super compact, and comes with small, medium, and large rollers so you can get a feel for what you like. These were the first rollers I tried and there was basically no learning curve. Since my hair is short and fine, I like to stick to the small rollers, but when I want some volume the medium are great.

Best for a bouncy blowout: T3 Volumizing Hot Rollers LUXE

Lately, I’ve been coveting a vintage-y classic blowout over my usual beachy waves, but I have one small problem: I’m useless with a round brush. These rollers can give you big, bombshell curls on longer hair, but on my lob I get more of that chic curled-under bounce. They’re somewhat expensive, but the higher price tag comes with a lot of perks—like grips that won’t burn your fingers, two heat settings, auto turn-off, and a sleek, compact look.

Best pro option: BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium 20 Roller Hairsetter

With a mix of small, medium, and large rollers, you can create pretty much any wave or curl size you’re after. Velvet rollers keep your hands cool and hair smooth, and the gentle far-infrared heat doesn’t damage your hair.

Best for thick hair: Conair Jumbo and Super Jumbo Hot Rollers

This recommendation comes straight from Glamour’s West Coast editor Jessica Radloff. She swears by them for her super thick hair, which she says usually takes an hour to curl with a traditional wand. Instead, she just pops these extra-large curlers in for 20 minutes while she’s multi-tasking and is left with a “Kate Middleton bouncy blowout.” Sold.

Best for waves: John Frieda Body & Shine Smooth Waves Jumbo Rollers

If loose waves are more your thing than mega volume, hot rollers have you covered for that as well. The trick is to look for curlers that are jumbo in size, which will add more of a bend to your hair as opposed to tighter ringlets or spirals. This set includes five extra-large rollers to give you big, bouncy waves. Think: classic Victoria’s Secret waves

Best for travel: Revlon Curls-to-Go Travel Hot Rollers

Yes, hot rollers made specifically for travel exist. This super-compact set includes five medium and five small rollers, so you have the best of both worlds. Plus, it comes a heat resistant bag and clips, so you can throw them straight into your suitcase after using them.

Revlon Curls-to-Go 10 Piece Travel Hot Rollers

Best classic rollers: Calista Hot Wavers

Consider this a no-frills set of rollers that will give you a classic curl. They’re a great option if you prefer clips over pins, and don’t want to spend too much money. The included travel case is a nice bonus for storage as well.

Best for damaged hair: Caruso Molecular Steam Hairsetter

This set uses steam to heat up foam rollers one by one. While all hot rollers are gentler on hair than an iron, these are particularly good for fragile hair since they’re flexible and there’s even less heat applied.

Best compact rollers: Remington Pro Hair Setter

This handy little kit is super compact since the clips are stored with the rollers, and there’s the built-in cord wrap. It might be small, but the base holds 20 curlers of different sizes and the thermal technology heats up in under five minutes.

The 13 Best Scalp Treatments You Need in Your Shower https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/the-13-best-scalp-treatments-you-need-in-your-shower.html Mon, 25 Jan 2021 21:00:25 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/the-13-best-scalp-treatments-you-need-in-your-shower.html [ad_1]

If we’re talking over-the-counter, the best scalp treatments should make your dryness, flaking, and itching go away without requiring a trip to the derm. But here’s the thing: itchy scalp treatments and shampoos for dandruff haven’t exactly been a thrill to shop for in the past. The packaging is usually clunky or the smell is always just slightly too clinical. So they’ve typically been reserved for that spot in the very back of your shower caddy.

But no longer: With more info than ever about the importance of scalp health, scalp products are stepping up their game. Every time we open Instagram, it seems like another brand is releasing a new scrub, mask, or elixir promising to to de-flake, balance, and nourish your scalp. It’s easy to be suckered into pretty packaging, but how many scalp products do you actually need? And should you be using them even if you don’t deal with dandruff? Actually yes, according to pros.

“Everyone, no matter their gender or age, can benefit from taking care of their scalp,” says Ariel Ostad, M.D., an NYC-based dermatologist. Your scalp is more prone to dryness than your hair, and a build-up of styling products and increased pollution can lead to irritation and flakiness. Hadley King, M.D., a dermatologist at Skinney Medspa in New York City, adds that excess dryness is something to keep your eye on, as it can eventually lead to hair loss.

Most experts will agree you don’t need a full arsenal of products, especially because too many products can lead to irritation. “We are conditioned to think we need more products than we do, often leading to over washing, which actually irritates our skin by disrupting its natural barrier,” says Ostad.

A clarifying shampoo is something everyone can use once or twice a week to help get rid of buildup and deep-clean your scalp. King suggests scrubs for deeper exfoliation, but Ostad warns that they can be irritating, so ease in. Ostad also recommends incorporating a weekly oil or monthly mask to hydrate and strengthen your skin barrier and protect your hair follicles. More targeted serums and treatments are best if you’re trying to prevent hair loss or have have seborrheic dermatitis (the scientific name for dandruff).

If you like shopping with a cheat sheet in hand, keep these ingredients in mind next time you add to your haircare routine: tea tree oil, salicylic acid, argan oil, and anti-inflammatory botanicals like rosemary and lavender oil. And if you’re not sure where to start, we’ve rounded up some of our favorites below. Read on for the 13 best scalp treatments for soothing a dry, itchy scalp.
