Big hair—and velcro hair rollers, more specifically—is having a moment. One scroll through TikTok and Instagram and you’ll see everyone from influencers to celebrity stylists flaunting voluminous blowouts. Blame it on the ‘90s fever that’s completely dominated beauty trends the past year (blue eye shadow and scrunchies, anyone?), but bouncy, polished hair now reigns supreme in a beauty world once owned by messy beach waves.

Celebrity hairstylist Priscilla Valles—who styles the hair of Kim Kardashian, Hailey Bieber, and Dua Lipa and has her own extensions line with Glam Seamless—has noticed an uptick in clients asking for volume and is embracing the revival. “I’ve been encouraging [the look] a lot too,” she tells Glamour. “Not everybody wants that styled, curled look. I feel like I talk about [velcro hair rollers] in every interview. We’re bringing them back. I love that look. It’s soft ’90s glam.”

Of course, not all of us can afford to get blowouts on the regular or shell out the cash for a Dyson Airwrap, but velcro hair rollers can achieve the exact same look at a fraction of the price. They’re also accessible—you can easily pick them up at the drugstore or Sephora. The only problem? If you aren’t experienced with velcro rollers, they can be pretty intimidating. As someone who has leaned into the blowout trend, I got my own set of velcro rollers hoping to recreate the bouncy magic. They’ve been sitting in my closet collecting dust ever since.

But Valles assures us that using it isn’t as scary or difficult as it seems. Her only warning? Make sure the rollers aren’t too small. “You really want to have that natural look,” she says. “If you think of the little ladies with their roller sets, they are so small. They have so many of them. You want the opposite of that.”

Ahead, Valles breaks down how to use velcro hair rollers, along with her best tips for achieving bouncy beautiful hair.

Start at the top of your head.

It turns out, sectioning your hair is pretty easy. Valles recommends starting at the top of your head and working your way down. “I always like to start with on top because I want that to get the most heat and sit the longest, because it’s usually where you want most of the volume,” she says. You don’t have to be exact with the sectioning, just make sure the sections have a good chunk of hair (more on that later). “We’re going to do big sections here, because we’re not trying to have a really curly look.”

Go big or go home.

Valles recommends using the biggest rollers in your set for the back of the head and one size down for the sides. “These are three inch, two inch, three inch,” she says. “I go for the biggest ones, just because I really just want the volume at the root with a little bend on the ends. Obviously the tighter you go, the tighter the curl is. But I don’t really want a curl.”

Kitsch Pro Ceramic Hair Rollers

Prep the hair.

If you are working with damp hair, use a volumizing mouse or spray to get that extra oomf. Apply the product to the roots and run through the ends. Make sure the hair isn’t too damp—it should be 90 percent dry.

Hair Frosting Is The Prettiest New Take on Highlights https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/hair-frosting-is-the-prettiest-new-take-on-highlights.html Fri, 04 Feb 2022 19:19:52 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/hair-frosting-is-the-prettiest-new-take-on-highlights.html [ad_1]

While your mind may associate darker hair colors with cold weather, there’s nothing like a bright shade to pull you out of the winter blahs—which is why hair frosting is majorly trending right now.

The name might call to mind a can of Duncan Hines or jarring early 2000s frosted tips, but the technique is much more natural than both. Basically, it’s a riff on traditional highlights that add subtle pops of brightness throughout your hair. “Hair frosting is a free-hand method to paint highlights on the surface of the hair,” says Bianca Hillier, a celebrity hair colorist and Olaplex ambassador. “They’re intentionally placed and have a natural grow out, perfect for those who only get their hair maintained a few times a year.”

The super natural look is achieved because the highlights are painted directly on the hair, not on a foil like you may be used to. Not only does this give you a less precise look, but the lack of foil keeps the color on top of the hair, instead of moving all the way through it, explains Hillier. “A foil conducts heat, and frosting doesn’t instigate any heat and allows the chemicals to act at the formulated pace,” she says. “These frosted bits feel more sheer and ribbon-like opposed to a foil—dense and tinsel-like.”

Hillier says that the name “frosted” usually refers to an icy tone, there’s room to wiggle and you can get the look with warmer, more golden tones as well. “It’s always best to show up with an inspiration photo of what you desire allowing the hair colorist to navigate what is realistic to achieve and give a thorough consultation,” she says. “With a frosted look everyone must consider their skin tone and eye color in order to compliment what is best for you.”

Other things to consider? How much maintenance you want to commit to—this will determine the level of brightness you go for—as well as how natural you want the highlights to look, since they can range from sun-kissed to full-on money piece vibes.

No matter what shade or brightness level you go with, Hillier suggests asking your stylist for “soft contrast with fluid frosted tips,” to get the desired look. You’ll also want to upgrade your hair routine a little to make the highlights pop. “I always recommend my clients use Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother, and Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil at home to give the hair shine since cooler tones reflect less light than a golden warm tone,” she says. “I want all my clients to have the most sparkle possible.”

Hair Bows Are Officially Back and Perfect for the Holidays https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/hair-bows-are-officially-back-and-perfect-for-the-holidays.html Thu, 09 Dec 2021 19:49:09 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/hair-bows-are-officially-back-and-perfect-for-the-holidays.html [ad_1]

It’s probably been a while—like, decades even—since you’ve worn hair bows, but you might want to give them a second chance. If the red carpet is any indication, the accessory is making a major comeback, and we’re not mad at it one bit.

Oversized bows have been showing up on the heads of nearly every starlet in Hollywood lately, from Anya Taylor-Joy and Beanie Feldstein to Zoë Kravitz and Sydney Sweeney. Ariana Grande has been riding the trend train particularly hard, opting for color-coordinated bows during her TV appearances as a coach on NBC’s The Voice. Bows have also popped up in OOTD videos on TikTok, so you know it’s about to be big.

@gregoryrussellhair/Getty

The hair bow resurgence may feel sudden, but after two years of minimal glamour and events, it makes sense that we’re looking for something that feels more polished and pretty—plus, bows pair perfectly with a classic fluffy blowout, the unofficial hairstyle of 2021. Hair accessories have been on the rise since 2019’s padded-headband craze, and this feels like a fun update that’s a little more unexpected. We can also thank the Gossip Girl reboot and TikTok’s obsession with preppy style and “old money” vibes

Beauty nostalgia has run rampant over the course of the pandemic, and hair bows are both a throwback to retro glamour, as well as to the hairstyles we wore as little kids. Celebrity hairstylist Gregory Russell—the man behind Anya Taylor-Joy’s bows—says he loves bows as an easy way to dress up hair and add a ’60s feel. And of course, they’re the perfect accessory for the holiday season.

Bows may seem prissy, but there’s actually surprisingly versatile. A big silky bow is glamorous, a loose ribbon can be more boho, and a comically oversized bow like this one from Vaquera is actually edgy. Of course, how you style your hair makes a huge impact on the overall vibe as well. Russell loves a bow paired with a half-updo, a ponytail, or a low messy style to contrast the bow.

“If you’re worried about looking too styled, I would make sure there is a messy, effortless texture to your style to balance the femme feeling of a bow,” says Russell. “Products I recommend for a nice messy and effortlessly texture look are the Pureology Style + Protect Texture Finished Spray, which is lightweight and adds body and shine without crunch, but also the Style + Protect Mess It Up Texture Paste for a medium hold that adds texture and depth to the look.” As far as bows go, Russell recommends brands like Lelet and Jennifer Behr, since they’re easy to use.

Ready to try the trend for yourself? Below, a slew of bows to get you started.

‘Modern Beehive’ Hair Will Be Everywhere This Fall https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/modern-beehive-hair-will-be-everywhere-this-fall.html Wed, 13 Oct 2021 19:04:13 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/modern-beehive-hair-will-be-everywhere-this-fall.html [ad_1]

If there’s one hair trend we’re seeing pop up time and time again in 2021, it’s the modern beehive. While we undoubtedly have Amy Winehouse to thank for the ’60s beehive resurgence of the ’00s, this year the retro hairstyle has been seen on countless Fashion Week catwalks (think the likes of Moschino, Christian Cowan, and Batsheva), on various awards-season red carpets, and more recently on Anya Taylor-Joy who stars in Edgar Wright’s upcoming psychological horror film, Last Night in Soho.

Taylor-Joy’s blonde beehive hairstyle, featuring a blunt fringe and soft waves, makes sense—the new film is set in the Swinging Sixties, and the actor plays wannabe singer Sandy. The official description reads, “A young girl, passionate about fashion design, is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it seems, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences.” Last Night in Soho recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and will be released in cinemas on Friday, October 29.

We first saw the style making a welcome comeback at the Brit Awards in May, when Dua Lipa wore dark hair pulled back into a high voluminous bun with long strands framing her face. Then, at the BAFTA TV Awards in June, Aimee Lou Wood’s chic up-do served all the modern beehive drama.

The 26-year-old Sex Education star, who picked up the award for best female performance in a comedy, wore a flowing floral dress with statement collar by Miu Miu, her signature winged eyeliner, and her hair in a subtle beehive with face-framing bangs.

These ’70s Hair Trends Will Be Everywhere This Summer https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/these-70s-hair-trends-will-be-everywhere-this-summer.html Mon, 21 Jun 2021 21:19:03 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/these-70s-hair-trends-will-be-everywhere-this-summer.html [ad_1]

We’ve revisited the ’90s; we’ve done butterfly clips, straightened tendrils, scrunchies, and Rachel Green-style plastic claw clasps. So where to next? Well, ’70s hair trends just called, and they’re ready for a revival.

This season, brush up on Farrah Fawcett, Diana Ross, Stevie Nicks, and Brigitte Bardot. All four are major sources of inspo when it comes to our hair as we see texture–from choppy shags to fluffy fros–make a delicious comeback.

The sequel to the swinging ’60s brought about floaty layers and undone textures, but with some disco oomph and a rocker edge. Basically, this is liberated hair with a lot of attitude. Below we’ve rounded up the best chops making a phenomenal comeback. Now we just need to find some flared trousers and folksy floral vests to go with them…

Curtain Bangs

“I’m always into a gorgeous ’70s style fringe, which seems to have been revived all over social media at the moment,” explains celebrity hair stylist and Shea Moisture Ambassador Stefan Bertin. “For me I think a way to modernize it is to texturize it, rather than keeping it fluffy. Using a light salt spray as a finisher will add some modern grit to an otherwise soft and feminine style, making it the best of both worlds,” he says. Try Redken’s Fashion Waves Sea Salt Spray.

“A major ’70s comeback trend is curtain bangs and billowing layers to really add drama and width around the face,” agrees Dom Seeley, international creative director at Color Wow. “So many influencers and social media content creators have rushed to get this haircut. It’s gone viral.”

The Shag

“I’m a big fan of the shag, it’s such an iconic ’70s look,” says top hairstylist, George Northwood. “I loved when I did it for Alexa [Chung] all those years ago with those big, face-framing bangs. This style adds lots of volume and texture to the hair, which is great for those finer hair types. It’s a very ‘cool girl’ cut and can really update your whole style. To give it a bit more of a modern edge, I would ask your hairdresser to stay away from too many layers as this can make it feel quite dated. Instead, make it all about that big statement sweeping fringe.”

Fluffed-out ‘Fros

“’70s hair was fluffed out and allowed to do its own thing,” says top hair stylist and afro specialist, Charlotte Mensah, and we’re seeing that once again. “With so many of us exploring and learning about our natural hair during lockdown, it’s no wonder a lot more women want to let their unique textures thrive in 2021.” XXL, ’70s-style ‘fros are set to take center stage this summer–think disco, soul train vibes. As for giving the style a fresh spin, Mensah recommends applying her Manketti Oil Pomade. “It coats every last curl and coil with intense moisture to instantly eliminate frizz and dryness. Your curls will look instantly defined and feel super soft, especially during the warm spring and summer months,” she says.

Cher Hair

“Another of the strongest ’70s hair trends I still see (even though it’s been around for a year or two) is the ‘Cher hair’ that Kim Kardashian made famous again,” says Seeley. “Long, middle parted glass hair has still got all the momentum and looks great for any occasion. It makes a statement when it’s kept healthy with treatments and shine products.” (For this look, Seeley recommends Color Wow’s Dream Coat and Extra Mist-ical Shine Spray.)

Farrah Fawcett Flicks

For one of the biggest styles this summer, “look to the iconic Farrah Fawcett-style with flicks and a curtain fringe,” says celebrity hair stylist Dionne Smith. “It’s super versatile as it suits most face shapes and lengths.”

“Styling wise, to keep it modern it’s all about the shine and control,” says Seeley. “Use good curling irons or blowdryers and boar bristle brushes, so you get the smoothness and shine while controlling your style. ’70s hair was fluffy and almost frizzy, but with modern day products and tools it’s easy to make it look polished.”

Mullet

Last but not least, “the mullet has a comeback,” says Smith, “but a modern take will be disheveled and less severe than the ’70s version with lots of texture. Look to Miley Cyrus and Cara Delevingne who have rocked the mullet.”

Oyster Gray Is the Coolest New Summer Hair Color Trend https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/oyster-gray-is-the-coolest-new-summer-hair-color-trend.html Sun, 11 Apr 2021 14:45:59 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/oyster-gray-is-the-coolest-new-summer-hair-color-trend.html [ad_1]

There’s no denying it, gray hair has been the most talked-about shade of the past year. Sure, some people have been Googling how to cover it, but the biggest conversation has been how to embrace it, or fake it. Either way some serious gray appreciation is happening.

When we asked hairstylists their hair color predictions for 2021, almost all of them spotlit grey. But we’ve spotted one shade in particular taking off. Oyster gray hair is the fresh, breezy, pearlescent color trend that’s popping up all over Instagram, and it’s perfect for summer.

The bright, white-gray color brings together platinum blonde with shimmering silver tones that look like the inside lining of an oyster shell. The key though is conditioning. The ultra glossy, mother-of-pearl sheen is what elevates this color, which means hair masks and glossing treatments are this shade’s best friend.

“This season we will definitely see a continuation of women embracing their gray hair,” says James Pryce, expert master stylist at Larry King Salon. Not only will we be embracing our God-given grays but, according to Pryce, we’ll also be faking the gray with a little help from glosses, tints, and dyes.

There will also be lots of hybrid shades that incorporate natural grays, but emphasize them with the help of beautifully applied dye.

“We will see a lot of softer, finer, shimmering balayage,” says TRESemmé lead stylist Aaron Carlo. He reckons we’ll see lots of silver shots and sparkling strands through hair to celebrate or incorporate grays. “Loads of people are embracing gray so we’ll see some amazing new ways to enhance the shade with toners and shampoos.”

To coincide with this boom in gray appreciation, the market has seen an explosion in innovation, with brands like John Frieda, Redken and Moroccanoil all increasing their offerings to protect, enhance, or create silver-gray strands.

Spin-off shades have seen an uptick, too. “Mushroom blonde“, a glossy greige, recently skyrocketed on Pinterest, with the search site noticing a 308% spike in users seeking out the shade. Even Bella Hadid toyed with the trend; she took to TikTok over lockdown to share a video of her with grey hair. Granted, it was just a really, really good filter but with such an enthusiastic response from followers, she’s might be tempted to make it permanent. Who could blame her with shades this pretty? Scroll on for some of our favorite oyster gray hair ideas.
