There’s no doubt Jennifer Aniston is a hair icon. Her infamous Rachel haircut was the reason thousands (possibly millions) of women across the world headed to the salon for flippy layers in the ’90s—and even today she’s inspiring the TikTok teens to ditch their beach waves for a polished, bouncy blowout. 

So it comes as a bit of a surprise that she hasn’t gotten onboard the celebrity beauty-brand train and launched a hair-care line. But finally, her brand, LolaVie (a reference to Aniston’s nickname Lola), launches on September 8.

LolaVie is launching with just one product, the Glossing Detangler, a multiuse spray that detangles, smoothes, adds shine, and acts as a heat protectant thanks to a blend of lemon extract, vegetable ceramides, and chia seeds. 

“I love for a product to have many jobs in one, so it has a heat protector and shine, and so it’s time-efficient,” Aniston told Allure about why she started with a single product. “[My hair routine is] basically washing and conditioning it, putting the detangler on, brushing it through, putting it up in a towel for 10 minutes, and then I either blow it out or let it dry naturally.”

Per Allure, LolaVie has been in development for over five years, and more products are coming soon. The brand aims to combine the best of nature and science, and the Glossing Detangler is 99% naturally derived. The brand is also focusing on sustainability and has replaced all water in its formulas with bamboo essence, as it’s a renewable resource and cruelty-free. 

Jennifer Aniston has previously opened up to Glamour about her hair journey. “I love my hair when it’s straight,” she said. “When I was a little girl, I had really long, straight hair to my bum—below my bum, actually. And then when my mom gave me the authority to do anything I wanted with my hair, mistakenly, I cut it all off. I could never grow it back. And then when I cut it short, I discovered it was curly.”

The beauty aisle looks a lot more diverse than it did a decade ago, and part of that is thanks to a number of Latinx beauty brands that have helped build a more inclusive market that celebrates the vibrancy of Latin-American culture. 

The concept of beauty (or bellezza) is integral to the Latin American experience, so it should come as no surprise that Latinx consumers are some of the biggest beauty spenders. Yet for a long time, many of the skin, hair, and makeup products available in stores failed to cater to Latin American beauty needs. With a rich tapestry of self-care rituals rooted in natural ingredients and passed down from generation to generation, those holistic traditions didn’t always align with the one-size-fits-all formulas on the shelf; in addition to makeup being limited in shade offerings, hair-care treatments did little to nourish natural curls and coils.

It’s through this lens that many modern-day Latinx beauty brands are born, with today’s entrepreneurs embracing an old-meets-new approach: They’re harnessing nutrient-rich ingredients from their unique regions and bottling them into clean, effective, and inclusive products that speak directly to the community’s vast heritage and its beauty needs.

From clean luxury skin care to restorative scalp oils, the options are (finally) plentiful. Get to know a few of the Latinx beauty brands putting the community front and center—and shop them below.

Tata Harper

Unable to find luxury beauty products that felt safe to use, Colombia-born Tata Harper launched her namesake brand in 2007 to help women like herself find the natural skin-care and makeup products she wanted—without compromising on effectiveness. Now considered a pioneer in plant-based (or farm-to-face) skin care, Tata Harper has set that the bar high for clean beauty standards: Her supercharged formulas are packed with hundreds of raw botanicals (some of which are grown on her Vermont farm) and remain entirely free of toxins, GMOs, or fillers.

Ceremonia

Rooted in Latinx heritage but decidedly modern in its formulations and packaging, Ceremonia is fashion consultant and influencer Babba C. Rivera’s first foray in the world of beauty. The clean hair-care brand debuted earlier in October 2020 with Aceita de Moska, a luxurious scalp remedy that combines potent natural ingredients from across the Latin American region: Brazilian pataua oil to reduce flakiness, aloe vera to condition, and castor oil to boost shine. Ceremonia has grown steadily in the last year, with noteworthy additions including full-system hair-care bundles and the beloved Pequi curl activator.

Elaluz

Your ultimate sun-kissed beach glow starts here. Mega-influencer Camila Coelho is the powerhouse behind Elaluz (the name means “light” in Portuguese), a beauty line that taps natural Brazilian superfood ingredients like papaya, açai, cupuacu, and camu camu to hydrate and nourish skin. Whether you pick up her 24k Lip Therapy or her best-selling Beauty Oil, many formulas are Leaping Bunny– or EWG-certified—or both—to ensure they meet the highest standards of clean.

Beautyblender

Rea Ann Silva has undeniably transformed the way many of us do our makeup with the Beautyblender, a must-have for pros and beauty enthusiasts alike. The brand currently carries two products—Forbidden Oil and Forbidden Hair Mask—that use ingredients like pistachio, cinnamon, and coffee-seed oil to help restore curl elasticity and shine. Cordero decided to launch Bomba Curls after suffering from traction alopecia and turning to “the unique hair-care recipes used in her native Dominican Republic to formulate elixirs that promote hair growth and health.”

Joaquina Botánica

You can say former fashion consultant Giovanna Campagna had somewhat of an epiphany in 2019 when visiting family in her mother’s native Colombia. She wanted to embrace the power of little-known yet super-effective native ingredients and introduce them to the world—much the way she did when she introduced Latin American fashion labels like Johanna Ortiz and Hunting Season to the American fashion scene. And so Joaquina Botánica was born. The brand, which takes its name from Campagna’s great-great-grandmother’s apothecary in Cali, currently has a lineup of two products: The first is a floral essence that mixes calendula, hyaluronic acid, and the Amazonian superfruit sacha inchi to replenish parched skin. The second is a hydrating face oil packed with brightening antioxidants from Colombia’s national flower, the orchid.

Is there anything Carolyn Aronson can’t do? She’s a hair stylist, cosmetologist, Miss Universe judge, philanthropist, and the fearless founder of It’s a 10, a hair-care empire that netted over $400 million in 2020. If you’re wondering how to wash a wig so it looks perfect every time you wear it, you’re not alone. Protective hair styles are no-brainers for millions of women any time of year, but during freezing winter months, braids, weaves, and wigs are extra-crucial in keeping cold air and external debris away from natural hair so that it can strengthen and continue to grow without breakage. But learning how to take care of a wig specifically can be a learning curve.

Personally, I’ve always opted for braids when I was ready to wrap my hair up but as someone who likes to play with color, I’ve been looking at wigs out of the corner of my eye for a while. Sometimes you just need an Arctic blue dye job, you know? I’ve done the real thing, but after a few rounds of bleaching my natural hair—not the best thing for my curls—I realized I’d need an alternative for switching up my look if I didn’t want to be plagued with split ends and a long grow-out period. 

From lace fronts to U-parts, wigs are particularly transformative. You get the versatility of instantly swapping colors, added protection, and the ease of your hair being relatively low maintenance. Once you find the right cut and proper installing technique, you’re set.  

But learning how to wash a wig is just as important as caring for the hair underneath. From how often you should be rinsing it to knowing how to properly store your unit when it’s not being worn, we spoke with some of our favorite hairstylists to break down everything you need to know for keeping your wig looking good wear after wear. 

How often should you wash your wig? 

On average, stylists recommend washing your wig often to remove buildup that can weigh the hair down. “You need to wash your wig at least once a week when it starts to get oily or tangled,” says celebrity hairstylist Kim Kimble, adding that product usage could increase the frequency. If you’re going light on  styling products, washing your wig once a week will help remove any buildup, helping keep the hair light throughout extended wear. Kimble recommends staying away from products that are drying like anything with an alcohol base or harsh detergents. 

What products should you use?

When picking your wig, you have the option of choosing synthetic or human hair. While synthetic  might eliminate encounters with frizz, “human-hair wigs offer opportunities for balayage, cutting, and styling and textures can range from straight and wavy to curly and coily,” says DC-based stylist and Wella Professionals Top Artist Diane Stevens. If you decide to go for a wig that’s been color-treated and is made from human hair, you’ll want to use a hydrating cleanser, says hairstylist and ORS Haircare Ambassador Chassidy Woods, who loves ORS’ Olive Oil Sulfate-Free Hydrating Shampoo, which she says is great at providing moisture, adding shine, and protecting color.

Regardless whether your wig is made from human or synthetic hair, Woods points out that lace frontals and closures need to be treated extra-gently when being cleansed and styled. Start off by soaking your wig in cold water with a small amount of shampoo—about a quarter size—for five to ten minutes. “Make sure the wig is completely penetrated into the water but don’t over-massage—that can cause unwanted tangling.” (Emmy-winning hairstylist Kiyah Wright, the expert behind Ciara’s incredible wigs, likes to use Felicia Leatherwood’s detangler brush to get knots out.) Then rinse the wig, draining any access water, and repeat as necessary until you feel like you’ve removed product buildup. Next up: a conditioner that will moisturize, detangle and strengthen the wig. 

On top of that, being Black and a new mom, I was afraid of being judged because of how my daughter’s hair looks. For years Black women have had to deal with social prejudices around wearing our hair in its natural state. Society has deemed this unprofessional or “unkempt.” Even as these discriminatory beauty ideals have finally begun to evolve, it’s been a struggle to embrace how I see myself and how I wear my hair.

I don’t want that for my daughter. I want her to wear her hair proudly and know she’s more than her hair. Recently I’ve been reading the book Hair Love, which celebrates a little girl’s natural texture and all the ways her hair is special, to Sophia before bedtime. I want to instill in her that no matter what her texture is, her hair is beautiful all the same.

And yet, for all the articles and message boards I found on children’s hair, I couldn’t find any resources specifically on Black babies’ hair. So one late night I went down a hole on YouTube—which, as a new mom, is basically my solution to everything now. There I found several videos from Black mothers who were experiencing the same issues I was. I just felt so comforted to know I wasn’t alone and that they had real advice beyond “this happens.” 

Ten months later and after a few trials and errors, I finally have a better understanding of how to care for my now two-year-old’s hair. Every other Sunday she gets excited when I tell her it’s time for her wash day. As I let her pour the water over her own head, I’ll ask her questions about what she likes or what book she wants to read. She’ll hold her rubber bands for me as I stretch out her curls. And when it’s finished, she’ll look in mirror and say, I look pretty. 

It makes me proud to feel like I’m sharing something with her and that I’m teaching her to love her hair. And now, if another new parent is looking for advice for their Black baby’s hair, I can share what actually helped.

Wash once every other week.

I used to wash Sophia’s hair once a week, but quickly realized this was too much. It was drying her scalp out, which caused dry patches. Now we wash and condition every other week with the Shea Moisture Kids line, and in between washes I touch up her hair with African shea butter mixed with organic coconut oil. 

Find a gentle detangling brush.

This detangling brush was chasing me all over Instagram, and so I finally decided to buy it. It’s an absolute game changer. It’s an all-plastic brush with soft, flexible bristles that puts minimum pressure on your hair and scalp. I use it after I’ve washed Sophia’s hair and while the conditioner is still in. It detangles with ease and prevents breakage.

Section and stretch out curls with hair ties.

This technique is a great way to stretch a toddler’s curls without using heat. After I’ve conditioned and detangled her curls, I part her hair in six sections and use black elastic hair ties to hold her hair in place. It takes about 20 minutes, and I do this while she watches her favorite show (which is currently Blue’s Clues and You). This style can last about a week or so, then I usually take it down and cornrow her hair or remoisturize and put it back into this style.

Invest in a shield hat for wash day.

Despite my daughter’s affinity for taking baths, anytime I’d try to wash her hair, she would cry, scream, and kick. She just couldn’t deal with water cascading down her face. This shield hat that her aunt found on Amazon is a lifesaver. It’s flexible, sturdy, and adjustable, so it keeps water and soap from flowing into your baby’s eyes and ears. It’s turned a wash day that was once almost intolerable into a fun experience for both of us.

In our series Wash Day Diaries, we’re asking influential women to break down exactly what goes into their routines so you can copy their tips, tricks, and products that work for your texture and style.

While hair care has morphed into a form of self-care for many—especially during the pandemic—for Black women, the two haven’t always gone hand in hand. Historically, we’ve had incredible strain placed upon our hair to look and behave a certain way. And no one understands that more than Taraji P. Henson. 

“I don’t want women with natural hair to think their hair is chore. It should be self care,” she tells Glamour. “We have special hair. It’s beautiful. It’s delicate. I know people think it’s strong because it’s thick, but we have very delicate hair that requires us to put it away. That’s why we’ve been wearing protective styles since we’ve been on this earth.”

But with the shortcomings of mainstream hair brands, Henson found she didn’t always have the tools to give her curls the care they needed. So she took it upon herself to cook up her own 17-piece hair line called TPH. “I know what works on my hair and what to stay away from,” she says, noting it’s taken a heavy amount of trial-and-error as well as a lot of dedication and attention. 

Now, one year into being a business owner, Henson has turned that attention to her customers. The resounding feedback she got: Create more deep conditioning products that provide extra hydration. Henson went to work, and this week, she’s introducing her new TPH Intense Moisture + Care line: Mask On (a moisturizing conditioning mask), Curls 4 Days (an intense moisture-rich curl creme), Twist & Set (a moisture-rich twisting cream), and Keep Shining (a lightweight dry oil mist).

In a time where many Black celebrities are revolutionizing in the hair industry—like with Tracee Ellis Ross’s Pattern and Gabrielle Union’s Flawless—Henson’s unique position is at the essence of scalp care. Her formulas are especially game-changing for those, like her, who often wear protective styles such as wigs, braids, and weaves. 

“I’ve always been a hair chameleon,” she says. “I grew up changing my hair and the color every other week. That’s my shit—my personality.” So here’s to all the Black women rocking braids, Bantu knots, body waves, Senegalese twists, Afros, sleek bobs, blowouts, and everything else that helps to showcase our dopeness and beauty. In a testament to how effective her products are, the hair chameleon herself gave Glamour a step-by-step of her wash-day routine. Read on.

Pre-poo Scalp Prep

I usually start by saturating my hair, get it real wet, and then I’ll towel dry, but making sure it remains damp. And then I’ll section it off and apply my Never Salty to the scalp and let it sit for five to 10 minutes to get a good activation. It feels like a peppermint patty with a cooling sensation. Then I wash that out and go back in with the Master Cleanse on my scalp. Again this is still the scalp treatment—I haven’t even gotten to washing my hair yet. By this time, I feel the tingling refreshing feel. And once my scalp is feeling squeaky clean, I go back in with my Mint Condition to add back moisture and finish with that.

Shampoo

After all that’s done, it’s time to start washing my hair. Sometimes I’ll switch it up by following the Master Cleanse with one of my shampoos, whether it’s the Serene Queen or Honey Fresh, for extra moisture and hydration—and then go in with my Mint Condition for my scalp. Then I wash that out, and then we’re ready for conditioning. 

Conditioning

I’ll go in with the creamy Make It Rain for conditioning, which I can quickly rinse out after detangling or leave longer for deeper hydration. For detangling I also have to have my Felicia Leatherwood brush. If I can’t find it, I will run around the house with soap in my eyes looking for it. And there are times—like every two weeks, depending on how my hair feels—I’ll give myself a mask. I like to wash day into a spa day with Mask On. 

And some days, my wash takes two days. I’ll sleep in After Dark for extra moisture because I give my hair that kind of attention.
