Gabrielle Union couldn’t have a more perfect name. The actor understands that the most important part of her job is not the glitz and glam (though she’s pretty incredible at that part too), but the power of unity. Throughout her career, she’s made it a point to uplift others—especially other Black women—through charity work, her production company I’ll Have Another, and using her platform to speak out against racism in the industry.

Union’s latest project is a panel she’s co-hosting with Taraji P. Henson and Sally Beauty on February 22. The roundtable will not only feature the two celebrity brand owners, but the Black female founders of smaller hair brands including The Doux, True + Pure Texture, and Mielle Organics. It may seem strange that these women who are technically competitors are coming together, but according to Union, at the end of the day, it’s bigger than selling shampoo and edge control. 

“When I started my hair line, one of the first people to reach out was Taraji,” Union tells Glamour. “She was like, ‘Send me products. I’ll promote it.’ And always in the back of your mind, you’re like, “But you have a hair line. Are you sure?'” But then Henson reminded Union that she was one of the very first people to post Henson’s line when it launched. “That’s what we do because there’s enough space for all of us. And so we’re like, ‘Okay, how do we take what we do for each other, and expand that?’ And so, at Taraji’s behest, we created this round table of founders.”

“You just wish that you could have done things sooner to make sure that everyone got included in these kinds of projects,” Union continues. “But what I love about how Taraji and I have always moved through Hollywood and the world, is this world is big enough for all of us to thrive. And sometimes when we put ourselves or we get put in little boxes, we can’t always see what the others are doing, or what they’ve demanded and gotten, or what worked, or why something didn’t work. And sharing those resources, sharing that information, being mentors… It just wasn’t always encouraged. But the way it’s always worked with us is we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. And if I have information, you have information. And if I have a platform, you have a platform. How can we expand that? And that’s what we’ve come up with with the founder’s round table.” 

“It’s easy to support people as they’re winning an Oscar or winning the Super Bowl or whatever,” she says. “It’s easier to be a fan and support them. But when people are at their darkest moment, who really shows up? And when it’s time for real solidarity, who really shows up? And, luckily we walk the walk, and that we talk. So hopefully it inspires more people to do the same.”

Gabrielle Union’s two-year-old daughter Kaavia went for a timely Halloween costume in 2021—Adele’s new album will arrive this November—and it’s not only one of the best kid costumes of the year, but one of the best costumes of the year, full stop.

For the outfit, Kaavia dressed as Adele in the stunning and iconic Schiaparelli look that the ballad queen wore to NBA player Anthony Davis’ wedding in September. The look is a black gown with massive white, 80s-inspired sleeves that hang off the shoulder. It’s accessorized with gold drop earrings, with the hair worn in an updo to show off the dramatic sleeves. 

Adele is always relevant, but Kaavia’s costume was a perfect choice for Halloween 2021 because the singer’s new album, 30, arrives in late November. And her newest single, “Easy On Me,” came out in October, just in time for Halloween.

Gabrielle Union has been really open about motherhood and her journey to it. The actor has adenomyosis, a form of endometritis that often causes infertility. She’s gone through IVF and has had several miscarriages. In 2018, she and her husband Dwayne Wade welcomed Kaavia via surrogate.

In 2019, Union talked to Glamour about being a parent in the public eye. “Part of the journey is being OK with how others—specifically moms—are viewing you, judging you, praising you,” she said.  “You feel raw and exposed and vulnerable.”

On October 24, Union ushered in Scorpio season by sharing a series of photos in matching paisley-print Etro pants with her husband of seven years. They also matched up top by, uh, not wearing anything up top. “Fittings ???? @dwyanewade,” she captioned the snaps, with the location tagged as “With My Baby.”

In case you’re wondering, Gabrielle Union is the Scorpio of the family, and Wade is a Capricorn. The couple have been together since 2008 and tied the knot in 2014. While the couple have two-year-old Kaavia, Union has also become close with Wade’s three children from his previous relationships: 19-year-old Zaire, 14-year-old Zaya, and 7-year-old Xavier.

“The experience of Dwyane having a baby so easily—while I was unable to—left my soul not just broken into pieces, but shattered into fine dust scattering in the wind,” she wrote in an essay for Time back in September. Still, the pair were ultimately able to work through it. 

“Each day, he had worked to be forgiven, and I had chosen to do so,” she wrote. “And part of this journey of making peace with our love is also making peace with ourselves. I had come to accept that without that awful collision in our lives—this Big Bang moment in our relationship that set our galaxy as we knew it—we wouldn’t have become the individuals we wanted to be.”

I have not had words, and even after untold amounts of therapy I am not sure I have them now.”

Gabrielle Union just cut off most of her hair, and she looks stunning. “So, I did a thing ?,” she wrote on Instagram alongside pictures of the new look. “The movies always show women cutting their hair when all is lost, but I wanted to know the feeling of making a change when things are gravy. It hits different and its’ foreign to me but I this new new.” She added the hashtags “#SummerChop #FlawlessChop #FlawlessCut” for good measure. 

Union is totally right: The trauma haircut is a common (and sometimes irksome trope) on screen. However, we play around with our hair all the time—even when things are going well.
