Chances are you know Michelle Pfeiffer from her long list of iconic roles (perhaps Scarface rings a bell?). Her newest movie, French Exit, was released earlier this year, but these days she’s just as busy offscreen. The actor launched her fragrance brand, Henry Rose, a few months before the pandemic hit, and hasn’t slowed down since. 

With Henry Rose—named after her daughter Claudia Rose and her son John Henry—Pfeiffer hoped to fill a major market void: clean fine fragrance. Like many parents, she became aware of what was in her products when her kids were young. “I started looking at the ingredients and the safety of those ingredients and my frustration as a consumer was I couldn’t find products that performed and that were also safe,” she tells Glamour. “And then decades went by and I finally said, ‘The technology is there and the consumer is there. The demand is there. So why is this not happening?’” Since then, the market caught up to demand, and she was able to replace her entire routine with “cleaner” counterparts—except when it came to fragrance. In response, she created a sophisticated, gender-neutral line of perfume and body products she could feel good about. 

The brand is largely inspired by Pfeiffer’s scent memories, particularly the newest launch, Flora Carnivora. She says the fragrance, which is the brand’s first floral and took nearly three years to formulate, was inspired by a specific childhood memory of sneaking into her elderly neighbors’ back garden, and being enraptured by the smell of the flowers. “It sort of reminds me of a movie,” she says. “They were this elderly couple, I actually had never even laid eyes on them, but I’m sure they were peeking out at me wondering what this bare-legged, barefoot, stringy blonde-haired girl was doing in their flower garden.”

“One day I got up the nerve to steal a bunch, and I ran back to my house and threw them in a Tupperware and used something to mash them,” she continues. “And that was my first foray into perfumery. Smelling flora carnivores brings me back to that time.”

In honor of the launch, we caught up with Pfeiffer to chat her love of fragrance, her beauty essentials, and the women who inspire her. Read on for the latest round of Glamour‘s Big Beauty Questions. 

Gamour: What’s one beauty rule you swear by? 

Michelle Pfeiffer: That there are no rules. Beauty is such a personal thing to everyone. Depending on what your facial features are, what kind of skin you have, what kind of hair you have, not everything works for everyone. That also applies to fragrance; it’s such a personal thing. I think the rule would be try not to pay attention to trends.

What about a beauty rule you think is B.S.?

Not-so-controversial opinion: You’ve been paying too much for fragrances. Until now, at least, because the best perfume deals of Cyber Monday 2021 have landed—and they’re nothing to turn your nose up at. (Unless, of course, you’re about to take a big whiff.)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! this is a scent that i’ve been chasing for years and years. this is my favorite smell in the WORLD.??? fragrance has always been such an enormous part of my life and existence since i can remember, and it was a dream to create this scent and bring my ideas to life. this has been one of the most exciting things i’ve ever done. i can’t wait for it to be yours so soon!!!!!”

The product, which costs $68, won’t be available until November, but you can sign up for “early access” now on the newly launched site.

According to the press release, the fragrance is “a warm, cozy scent that feels like home no matter where you are. [It] opens with sugared petals, accented by juicy mandarin and red berries. The heart of the fragrance unfolds with soft spices, rich cocoa, and creamy vanilla. The scent is anchored by base notes of warm musks, tonka bean, and sleek woods.” 

Eilish herself told Elle, “It makes me want to be curled up at Christmas.”

She continued, “It reminds me of when I was 14. I had this shirt, and it was like a mesh black turtleneck. I don’t know why it reminds me of that shirt, but it does. I think about the closet I had that shirt in. I had it in a big wooden closet in my room, and it kinds of smells like that. So that is what comes to mind.”

There’s no denying the massive shift Rihanna created in the beauty industry when Fenty Beauty launched in 2017. But little did we know that was just the Bajan singer’s first step toward creating her own little Fenty universe, which would expand to include skin-care, lingerie, and even a luxury clothing line. Now, she’s adding a new baby to the mix with Fenty Parfum. 

The news first came on on July 28, when Rihanna posted some black and white portraits on Instagram with the caption simply stating, “#FENTYPARFUM COMING SOON?,” while also revealing a new edgy hairstyle (those dramatically long sideburns are so her). Then, a short day later, the packaging for the perfume — which is in the same vibrant blue color used for the Fenty clothing line — was revealed on Fenty Beauty’s Instagram account. 

While the outside packaging is that pretty blue, the actual fragrance bottle is an elegant amber, as shown on another post on the page. The amber bottle houses a unisex fragrance that is “raw, sensual, spicy, and sweet all at once,” according to the caption. Fenty’s Eau de Parfum is meant to embody everything that Rihanna is, plus the many places she loves and cherishes. Brown is her favorite color, so that’s why she chose the dark amber hue for the fragrance bottle. “Brown is who I am. Brown is what I come from,” she shares in a press release from the brand. “If I’m going to make a fragrance that represents me, even the body language of the bottle needs to marry that.” 

She didn’t just handpick the bottle’s color but also the fragrance notes. If you’re expecting this perfume to fall into just one scent category, don’t. There’s a reason the brand described it as sensual, spicy, and sweet — notes of magnolia, musk, tangerine, patchouli, and a few others combine together to create this scent. We’re confident that Queen Riri created a fragrance that’s mind-blowing and alluring. 

The Fenty Eau de Parfum doesn’t officially launch until August 10 and retails for $120. You can sign up for pre-launch early access here. Facials are definitely my number one, but another thing  is, I just like to work out as often as I can, especially when I’m on the road or not at home. I try to find time to do that every day.

If you could change one thing about beauty perceptions in the industry or on social media, what would it be?

I would say to just find what works specifically for you and your face and your features. Because I think with this Instagram makeup-guru world, people are trying to find themselves, and they all end up painting their faces the same way, and it looks really scary. So I think less is more. And
I think if you can be more simple with it, like a lip, cheek product, and a mascara. That’s a good basis to start with as opposed to going straight for the heavy-handed foundation or bronze or all of that. 

What music has been inspiring you lately? 

I recently found this band called Buffalo Daughter that I’m really into. Also, this Japanese
composer named Shuta Hasunuma, it’s a bit more like soundscape-y and electronic. Also, I really like this band called Yellow Machinegun. 

What’s the last internet rabbit hole you’ve found yourself sucked into? 

A lot of prints, like cartoons or anime illustrations on Instagram. Once I get clicking, I’m always led to another page and another page, and I started buying certain prints that I really like here and there to decorate my room.

You have $20 and free roam of the drugstore—what are you buying? 

A Korean face mask, one or two of those. A mascara, a red lipstick—something that’s very matte—and baby powder. 

 Who are the women who are inspiring you the most right now?

Stylewise—and also just lifewise, always—Audrey Hepburn, Eddie Sedgwick, and Siouxsie Sioux.
