Has your grandma ever sat in a famous person’s lap at a party? Jessica Chastain’s answer to this question is a slightly reluctant yes.

On The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, January 5, the Oscar-nominated actor shared a story about her grandma sitting on Bradley Cooper’s lap at a party. 

The conversation started when DeGeneres asked Chastain about her grandmother. “I was talking about dating sites, and I heard that your grandmother is either in the market or she doesn’t really need my help because she just goes up to people,” DeGeneres said.

“I’ve been trying to get her dates for a long time. I mean, it’s been maybe 15 years, 20 years, that I’ve been…I used to take pictures of her and put them on Match.com,” Chastain said. “I worked with Al Pacino, she was very excited about that; I took a picture of the two of them together and it was on her bedside table. Matthew McConaughey, she was stoked.”

Chastain then went on to tell the story about her grandmother and Bradley Cooper. “A few years ago, I had a party at my house and Bradley Cooper was there. My grandmother is now at the age where she just really doesn’t care, you know? She’s just like, ‘I’m just gonna do whatever I want.’ So in the middle of the party, she just walked over to Bradley and just sat on his lap,” Chastain said. “He looked horrified, actually. He had never met her. He didn’t know who she was.”

As a producer on The 355, the movie this appearance was promoting, Jessica Chastain made sure she and the other working moms in the cast didn’t have to choose between the project and their families, setting up a kids trailer on set. “I love bringing families on set,” Chastain told Entertainment Tonight. “We had a trailer that was for children, and so how wonderful that, yes, we can be successful and wonderful at our work, but we can also not have to shut down part of our life in order to do so.

“And I think for the longest time it’s been like, you’re either a career woman or you’re home. It’s like, there’s no such thing,” she continued. “Men have been able to do both for years. Let’s just make it possible for everyone.”

The 355 hits theaters on Friday, January 7, and also stars Penélope Cruz, Lupita Nyong’o, Diane Kruger, Fan Bingbing, and Sebastian Stan. 

Bradley Cooper just detailed a terrifying incident that took place prepandemic—and we’re probably going to stop daydreaming on the subway.

In October of 2019, prior to the COVID-19 shutdowns, the actor was held at knifepoint on a New York City subway while on his way to pick up his now four-year-old daughter. (Lea De Seine Shayk Cooper, whom Cooper shares with his ex Irina Shayk, would have been just two years old at the time.)

“I used to walk around New York City all the time with these [headphones] on—this was prepandemic—I was on the subway [at] 11:45 to pick [up] Lea downtown at Russian school and I got held up at knifepoint,” the actor said on the most recent episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, per Us Weekly. “It was pretty insane. I realized I had gotten way, way too comfortable in the city. My guard was down.”

The Hangover actor said he was alone on the end of the subway platform when he felt somebody approach from behind, thinking it was a fan looking for a photo. He said, “As I turned, I’m up against the post like it’s the French Connection or some shit, and I turned. I looked down and I see a knife.” He later added, “I look up, I see the person’s eyes, and I’m taken by how young they are.”

While Bradley Cooper may have played characters put in some pretty dangerous positions in films like American Sniper, the actor says his instincts took over—and that he did exactly what he’s heard not to do when facing down an assailant with a knife: He ran. 

“I just started booking, just started running,” Cooper said. “I jumped over the turnstile, hid around the white tiled entrance to the subway [and] took my phone out. He jumped over, running away. I took a photo of him. Then I chased him up the stairs. He started running up Seventh Avenue. I took two more photographs of him. I ran down two police officers in an SUV, showed them the photograph and I’m, like, talking to them, and the guy kept saying—it was so interesting—he’s like, ‘Are you stabbed?’ I was like, ‘No, no.’ He was like, ‘Check to see if you’re stabbed.’ What happens is people get stabbed and they’re in shock. I looked to see if he was right…. And then I got back on the subway and picked up my daughter.”

While the event was likely traumatizing, Cooper was able to joke about it a bit, telling host Dax Shepard that the entire ordeal was “scored” because he was listening to music, though he can’t remember what was playing. “I have my headphones on the whole time. I can’t hear anything,” the filmmaker said. “I’m just listening to music. So it’s scored; the whole thing was scored.” 

We’re just glad he’s okay.

Irina Shayk might be against the term “coparenting,” but she’s all for giving props to Bradley Cooper, the father of her four-year-old daughter. 

In a new interview with Highsnobiety‘s HIGHStyle the model praised her ex, Cooper, for his “hands-on” approach to raising their daughter. “He’s a full-on, hands-on dad—no nanny,” Shayk said. “[My daughter] Lea went on holiday with him for almost two weeks—I didn’t call them once.” 

Honestly, we’re not about praising dads for doing the bare minimum when it comes to raising children—especially considering society’s seemingly endless expectations for mothers—but everyone needs help sometimes, so this is honestly pretty impressive. A no-nanny policy in Hollywood is practically unheard of!

This interview lines up with another statement she gave about Cooper’s strengths as a father back in March 2021. While referring to her ex as “the most amazing dad,” she also explained why she rejects the term “coparenting.”

“I never understood the term ‘coparenting,’” she told Elle at the time. “When I’m with my daughter, I’m 100% a mother, and when she’s with her dad, he’s 100% her dad. Coparenting is parenting.”

Shayk, who typically keeps her family life pretty private, also opened up to HIGHStyle about their “very strict” parenting style. “When she finishes eating, she gets up from the table, takes her plate, says ‘thank you.’ Without ‘please’ or ‘thank you,’ she’s not getting anything,” Shayk continued. “It’s hard, because she has so many toys. I had one doll, and I still have this doll. Blonde, blue eyes, big Russian doll. My grandma used to make clothes for her.”

Shayk continued, “I always explain, ‘Look, this is my doll. I had only one.’ Or sometimes, ‘You have this candy. I used to have candy only for Christmas.’”

Irina Shayk and Bradley Cooper called off their four-year relationship in June 2019. “I think in all good relationships you bring your best and your worst—it’s just the nature of a human being,” Shayk told Vogue in a candid interview seven months after their split. “Two great people don’t have to make a good couple.”

On June 17, just weeks after Shayk was spotted in Paris with rumored boyfriend Kanye West, the former couple was spotted together by the model’s NYC apartment. According to a source speaking with E! Online, the actor was picking up his ex, whom he dated from 2015 to 2019, for an appointment. 

“They were both talking to their daughter and she was animated and pointing at things,” an eyewitness told the publication “They seemed like a happy family spending time together.”

On June 8, the supermodel was spotted with West in France, where he was celebrating his 44th birthday, per TMZ. The source speaking to the publication claimed the pair were walking together around a luxury boutique hotel and were “100% romantically together,” though it was “unclear” how serious the relationship could be. The article also points out that Shayk has modeled in a Yeezy show and that she’s name-checked in his song “Christian Dior Denim Flow.” She even appeared in the music video for West’s 2020 song “Power,” staring down the camera.

“Irina and Kanye have been spending time together and getting to know one another,” a second source revealed to Us Weekly. “He’s always thought she was beautiful and they’re both looking forward to seeing where this goes.”

It’s actually Shayk’s discretion that reportedly gained her the support of West’s ex as well. According to another source with Us Weekly, Kim Kardashian is supportive of the new romance, which is flourishing only four months after Kardashian filed for divorce. 

“Kim doesn’t mind because she saw how quiet and respectful Irina was after she broke up with Bradley,” the source said.

This tracks with Kardashian’s statements in the latest episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. “[West] deserves someone that can go support his every move and go follow him all over the place and move to Wyoming. I can’t do that,” she cried. “I feel like a fucking failure that it’s, like, a third fucking marriage. I feel like a fucking loser. But I can’t even think about that. I want to be happy.”

Supermodel Irina Shayk is as much a mother as any other mother, which is why she doesn’t quite like the oft-used term “co-parent” as a description of her relationship with ex Bradley Cooper. 

“I never understood the term ‘co-parenting,’” she told Elle in a new profile. “When I’m with my daughter, I’m 100 percent a mother, and when she’s with her dad, he’s 100 percent her dad. Co-parenting is parenting.” Fair enough! Although, in defense of writers who have used the term, it’s not a  pejorative. It just describes two people who aren’t in a relationship but are both involved in their children’s lives, as opposed to situations where the kids live exclusively with one parent or family member.

As for the parenting that Shayk does—with and without Cooper—she described the A Star Is Born director as “the most amazing dad.” Other than that, she doesn’t really want to talk about him. “My past relationship, it’s something that belongs to me, and it’s private,” she said. “It’s just a piece of my inner self that I don’t want to give away.” Again, fair enough!

At home, Shayk strives for normalcy. “I’m not a fashion person. I’m a regular girl who is home watching Netflix,” she says of her off-duty routine. An accurate description of our past year, too.

She has a healthy attitude toward the tabloids, as well. “I don’t read what is out there. Honestly, I’m too busy raising a child. If they want to write articles [about me], they’re doing their job. I’m concentrating on my life and my friends. The rest is just noise,” Shayk said. I’m kidding, but the tune, which appears in their movie A Star Is Born and earned an Oscar for Best Original Song, is full of emotion, power, and soul. The only thing more beautiful than Clarkson’s cover of “Shallow” is how she talked about Gaga before performing it. “I love artists. I know there’s a lot of competition always with artists in the industry, but there’s a lot of us that just dig each other and really get inspired by each other and what they’re doing,” she said. “And this chick is amazing. We’re really different, but at the same time, we’re really similar in the fact that she just loves music, and that’s why she’s doing what she’s doing.”

Okay, so this is technically a parody, but it still counts. Corden and Keys riffed off “Shallow” as a way to tee up her 2019 Grammys-hosting gig, and the result is pure hilarity. And incredible vocals, of course. I mean, this is Alicia Keys.

Why, yes, it is possible to do a cover of your own song. Gaga’s arrangement of “Shallow” at the 2019 Grammys is completely different from how she sang it in A Star Is Born. In lieu of a stripped-down look and vocals, Gaga went full-on glam-pop, incorporating many of the elements that made her a pop phenomenon back in 2008.
