Prior to the pandemic, Paris Hilton was traveling 250 days a year. But the upside to all that time on the road as a DJ and entrepreneur? She’s a bonafide sleep pro. “I can sleep anywhere: planes, trains, wherever. I always bring a bag with me that has three pillows, my blanket, earplugs, eye mask—I have my whole bag of sleeping accessories,” she says.

Sleep hasn’t always been easy for Hilton. “I used to have severe nightmares since I was teenager and severe insomnia basically my whole life. But now in the past year since I released my documentary This is Paris and talked about [my trauma], I no longer have nightmares,” she says. “When you hold any trauma in, it will affect you. As soon as I spoke about it, I felt like I had released it. Using my platform and my voice to stop it from happening to other children, it’s been very healing and that’s been amazing for my sleep.”

These days, sleep is a huge priority. “In order to give my best in everything I do, sleep is one of the most important parts of my routine,” Hilton says. To wind down at the end of a long day, Hilton and her fiancé Carter Reum have a Netflix routine. “We are watching this new show that we just found called Manifest, which we love. I also watch The Simple Life. It’s so funny,” Hilton says. “Carter thinks it’s hilarious. He doesn’t really watch reality TV, he runs a venture capital fund and is a very serious businessperson, so it’s funny to watch him watching it.”

We chatted with Hilton about the products that have helped transform her sleepless nights into relaxing evenings and the steps she’s taking to wake up well rested.

My nighttime routine

I take baths every morning and every night before I go to bed. I love having lavender bath salts or something like that to make me feel relaxed. When I get out of the bath, I do my whole skincare routine. I love U Beauty. Their Super Hydrator is amazing. I use that every single night and morning. I love using these eye masks from ToGoSpa and by 111SKIN. Barbara Sturm, I love her Eye Cream and Hyaluronic Serum. I also use Sunday Riley’s LUNA Sleeping night oil and C.E.O. Brightening Serum.

Dr. Barbara Sturm Eye Cream

Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum

Sunday Riley Luna Retinol Sleeping Night Oil

Sunday Riley C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum

My skincare secret weapon

I have this LightStim Pro Panel. After I have all of my products on or a facemask, I lie under the light while I’m getting ready to go to bed. I really believe in light therapy. It has a lot of amazing positive effects for your skin and helps with building collagen and keeping your skin glowing and beautiful.

The supplement that helps me sleep

One product that’s been a game changer for me, with sleeping, with stress, with everything, is R3set Unwind. I take it at night and it helps me relax and prepares my body for sleep. When I get up in the morning, I take R3set Calm and that keeps me focused. I’m obsessed.

My favorite pajamas

I have some really cute pajamas that my friend from Dolls Kill gave me with Care Bears and Hello Kitty. So when I want to be cute, I’ll wear that. And if I want to be comfortable, I wear silk pajamas or I have this big comfy fluffy robe by this brand called Wrapped in a Cloud that I have in like every color because it’s my favorite.

I can’t sleep unless I have an eye mask

I collect them actually because there are so many funny ones that say cute things. There’s one that says, “the bags under my eyes are Chanel” that I’ve been using lately.

How I make my room relaxing

I run a fan when I’m sleeping. Ever since I was little, my mom always had a fan in our rooms when we would travel or even at home so it would make a soft noise and blow cold air on me. I found this app called Sleep Fan, which mimics a fan noise.

My latest sleep tech

During the pandemic, I started working with a sleep doctor, Dr. Michael Breus, to learn more about normalizing my sleep. I’ve been paying attention to how well I’ve been sleeping by using the Oura Ring. I love how you can kind of gamify sleeping—every morning you wake up and go on the app and you see how much sleep you got, how much of it was REM, when you woke up in the middle of the night, etc.

Another thing that’s been a game changer for me this past year is this COVE device. It’s neuroscience technology that applies a gentle vibration behind your ears—basically it activates the part of the brain that reduces anxiety and stress. It makes you feel calm and I sleep so much better.

What’s on my nightstand

I keep everything on it that I use to go to sleep. I have a Louis Vuitton journal where I write everything that I need to do. I use the This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray—I love spraying lavender on my pillows. I also sometimes burn a Pure Love candle by CHIJI.

Pure Love Crystal Energy Candle

I sleep better at night knowing…

That I am so loved and feel safe by the most loyal and incredible man I’ve ever met in my life.

How Camila Cabello Sleeps At Night https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-camila-cabello-sleeps-at-night.html Wed, 23 Jun 2021 20:03:33 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-camila-cabello-sleeps-at-night.html [ad_1]

Mental wellness and getting a good night’s sleep are inextricably intertwined. That’s the philosophy of Camila Cabello, the chart topping, platinum recording artist set to star in a new adaptation of Cinderella out later this year. “Circadian rhythm is a real thing,” she says. “I try to not go to sleep after 10:30. When I go to sleep later than midnight, I tend to get worse quality sleep, even if I sleep the same amount.”

But unwinding after a long day, especially with an inconsistent schedule, is easier said than done. That’s when Cabello turns to Calm, the meditation app she’s partnered with to release her first original audio series called “Breathe Into It.” Over 13 sessions, Cabello dives into her own journey with mental wellness and the importance of mindfulness in her sleep routine. (When she can’t sleep, her go-to is Tamara Levitt’s guided meditation on the Calm app.)

Podcasts actually play a big role in Cabello’s sleep routine. “When I can’t sleep, I will put on a cooking podcast called ‘Home Cooking’—something neutral that engages me but also doesn’t make me emotional, so I can get tired again and go back to sleep if I want to,” she says. “There’s also ‘Poetry Unbound,’ which reads a poem and dissects it. The host is incredible.”

With her crazy schedule, we asked Cabello for the full breakdown of how she unwinds and gets into a calm headspace before bed.

I sleep in…

A big t-shirt and some shorts.

Of all the books I’ve read this year, this one has really stuck with me. Journalist Lisa Taddeo follows three women across the country over the course of a decade for a can’t-put-it-down look at female desire. As one friend put it, it’s the bodice ripper you won’t be embarrassed to read on the subway.

How Venus Williams Sleeps At Night https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-venus-williams-sleeps-at-night.html Tue, 18 May 2021 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-venus-williams-sleeps-at-night.html [ad_1]

Venus Williams—tennis champion, equal pay advocate, fashion and beauty mogul, and recently acclaimed interior designer—has a lot going on. That’s just the way she likes it. “You know, it’s better than nothing going on,” she says with a laugh. “I have such a crazy schedule but that’s a blessing when you’re doing what you love to do.”

Williams recently added wellness entrepreneur to her list of titles with the launch of self-care brand Asutra, which features a dreamy line of pain relief and sleep support products that dropped at Target stores across the country this spring.

When it comes to sleep, she’s an expert with a nighttime routine she takes seriously. “I think taking some time for yourself at the end of the day is so important. A lot of us are just moving in so many different directions, whether it’s work or family or whatever—hopefully the last part of the day is just a moment for you to breathe,” she says. “I have to have those moments for my own sanity.”

As Williams puts it, “to do what you love well, you gotta sleep.” So we asked her for her favorite products that help her unwind, and how she makes sure she wakes up with the energy of a woman at the top of half a dozen careers.

My favorite sleep aid

I think a lot of people don’t really know the power of magnesium. I actually travel with magnesium drops, I don’t leave home without those. You can also absorb it through your skin and it helps to ease sore muscles but it also supports sleep. So I really love using Asutra’s Melt the Pain Away Body Butter before bed.

Asutra Topical Magnesium Chloride Oil Spray

Asutra Melt the Pain Away Body Butter

The bed requirements I won’t compromise on

The bed is extremely important. I actually have one of those beds that raises up. Serena has one so I had to upgrade my bed for my sister. Bamboo sheets are definitely a must. The mattress protector has to be soft too.

Cariloha Resort Bamboo Sheets

The sleep kit I never leave home without

The Sleep Tight Kit from Asutra has lavender in the eye cover and also a lavender spray that really relaxes. So that’s my favorite—on the road, I always have to bring it. I actually always run out because I’m always giving it away.

What’s currently sitting on my nightstand

Water. Popcorn. My Asutra Mist Your Mood lavender spray, an ankle brace, and my mom got me an Alexa.

The nighttime skincare product I swear by

My rose oil from Asutra. It’s so beautiful, it smells like roses and it’s got little petals in it and it makes your skin glow. I don’t use it just on my face I use it on my whole body. It’s good when you’re wearing something short, which I always am.

Molly Sims Swears By This Overnight Facial for Glowing Skin https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/molly-sims-swears-by-this-overnight-facial-for-glowing-skin.html Thu, 06 May 2021 15:33:47 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/molly-sims-swears-by-this-overnight-facial-for-glowing-skin.html [ad_1]

Molly Sims is not the first celebrity to launch a podcast, but she just might be the most open about what she shares, especially when it comes to our collective fascination with beauty. “Women need to be honest,” she says, “because when you have a celebrity culture where people are saying, ‘I’m not really doing anything [to my face],’ or ‘I just look like this,’ that’s not transparency. And it doesn’t make the person that’s hearing that feel good about themselves or even think it’s attainable. I’m all for plastic surgery, but come on, let’s be honest about it!”

That thinking led to the launch of Lipstick on the Rim, a new podcast with Dear Media, where the model, author, and philanthropist talks about everything from “beauty, wellness, plastic surgery, nutrition, sex, and more” with her best friend of 17 years, Emese Gormley. “My mom was big into beauty and wellness and sharing what works, and my girlfriends and I do that too,” Sims tells Glamour. “We back each other, and I think as women, that’s really, really important.”

In that same spirit, Sims shared with us her nighttime routine for how she gets a good night’s sleep, including all the products she uses, and the slippers so comfortable she wears them during the day too.

My wind-down routine

I take magnesium to get to sleep. But I can sleep anywhere, anytime, on any surface. I don’t know if that’s from years of modeling and sitting in economy while traveling all over the world or what, but I’ve always been able to sleep. I also love a glass of wine. And every now and then I drink hot cocoa like Swiss Miss, or Four Mushrooms by Foursigmatic.

Swiss Miss Cocoa Milk Chocolate Mix

Four Sigmatic Mushroom Blend

The candles that always make me feel calm

I have my candles that I love, like Golden Glow by Skylar and Feu de Bois from Diptyque next to my bed.

What’s currently sitting on my nightstand

Right now I’m reading An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. It’s really good. And Lisa Jewell’s The Family Upstairs is really good, as well as Lacey Crawford’s Notes on a Silencing.

What I watch before bed

The joke about old Molly over here is she’ll see seven minutes of something and fall right asleep, but I am watching The Servant on Netflix. It’s really good.

My nighttime skin-care essentials

If I am in a rush to take my makeup off, I’ll use a Neutrogena makeup wipe or micellar water, but otherwise I’ll use Seiso JBeauty’s Fuwafuwa foaming cleanser that is unbelievable. I love their Experience Kit as well, which has everything you need, and it’s great for sensitive skin and packed with calming and hydrating ceramides. Georgia Louise makes a really nice cleansing balm to get all your makeup off.

Then I love Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis Overnight Facial. That product is insane! And the clean beauty line, Mara, is great for sensitive skin. I love their face oils.

MARA Evening Primrose + Green Tea Algae Retinol Face Oil

For eye creams, I like the Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Crème and Tatcha’s Silk Peony Eye Cream.

Tatcha The Silk Peony Melting Eye Cream

The PJs, robe, and slippers I look forward to putting on

I love a Liberty print. I’m obsessed with Lunya, and Nevins. Those are my two new finds. They are just so pretty and soft and comfortable. I got a gift with Misa, a beautiful coral robe that’s like silk and beautiful. James Perse makes a white one that’s really great. And I love my slippers from Naked Cashmere. I wear them everywhere. They make a great cashmere robe as well.

The softest sheets and eye mask

I love Slip pillowcases, as well as their silk eye mask. And I also got a wedding gift from that famous linens company in Switzerland called Schlossberg, and they’re fantastic.

I sleep better at night knowing…

Knowing my kids are with me. As long as they’re okay, I’m okay.

‘Clarice’ Star Rebecca Breeds Has Figured Out How to Avoid Nightmares https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/clarice-star-rebecca-breeds-has-figured-out-how-to-avoid-nightmares.html Tue, 13 Apr 2021 20:37:15 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/clarice-star-rebecca-breeds-has-figured-out-how-to-avoid-nightmares.html [ad_1]

Rebecca Breeds, the star of CBS’s newest drama Clarice, typically works 16 hour days, sometimes starting as early as 5 a.m. Today she’s in the middle of a rare day off, but she’s certainly not taking it easy. “No, I’ve gone over both our finale scripts, went for a run, been for a COVID test and now I’m doing press. But I am on the couch, so it’s lovely.”

The Australia native says that working on the Silence of the Lambs spin-off series sometimes makes it hard to unwind, and if you’ve seen even one of the show’s episodes, you can understand why. “Some days you don’t really switch off,” she says. “Clarice is so in the zone, she just lives for her job, and I feel like that’s what I’ve been doing while I’ve been playing her. It’s a funny parallel.”

Breeds wouldn’t trade it for the world—she says even while portraying Clarice’s trauma, she’s having the best time working on the show. “We all just have so much fun, and I find it so satisfying to watch the episodes when they air,” she says. “I get nervous [for her], but I’m so proud of the work we’re doing.”

That includes the work Breeds is doing to make sure she stays strong and healthy. She follows the same routine each night, which includes preparing for the next day by making her morning smoothie at night and packing her work bag. “I am not an early bird,” she says with a laugh.

The 33-year-old also relies on an elaborate skin-care routine, which she says has actually been one of the perks of the job. “When I got the role, I was like, ‘That’s it, I’m investing in stuff I know I’m going to love and use!’” she says. “It’s your face, after all. It’s worth it!”

Here, Breeds walks us through how she falls asleep, from the candle that sets the mood to the “magic potions” that transform her skin.

My go-to trick to help wind down

I always have low lighting. When I get home, I only turn on the lamp lights. Growing up, I remember going to bed for me was always such a punishment because I’d hear my two older brothers laughing downstairs, and I was like, “Why do I have to go to bed just ’cause I’m the youngest?” But now I view getting ready for bed and going to sleep as a way to nurture and take care of myself.

My nighttime skin-care essentials

My skin-care routine is a part of how I wind down and puts me in the right headspace. Thankfully, Clarice doesn’t wear a lot of makeup; she’s super natch, which I love. But still, you’ve got that foundation layer on, so one of the first things I do when I come home is wash my face. Most cleansers would dry out my face until I found this company called Oumere. The founder is a science genius and she has a product called Oil of Dissolution Theory that I use to take my makeup off, and it doesn’t strip my face of oils. It leaves it really soft and dewy, and it’s really gentle. I then use a microfiber cloth called Erase Your Face with lots of hot water to gently press down on my face and get the makeup off.

Oumere Oil Dissolution Theory Cleanser

Erase Your Face Reusable Makeup Removing Cloth

Then I use Oumere’s No. 9 to exfoliate. It’s so good my makeup artist was like, “What have you done? Your skin is like butter—it’s amazing!” So, yeah, No. 9 is a little piece of magic.

Oumere No. 9 Daily Liquid Exfoliant

Then I use La Mer’s The Treatment Lotion, which helps make my face super nice and dewy. It’s a serum and it’s jam-packed with antioxidants. That’s my base layer and then that helps maximize the efficacy of the products I use after that. It’s an investment, but it lasts a really long time. Then I use the Oumere UV-R because I have hyperpigmentation on my face from sun damage, and it’s packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and whatever other magic she puts in there!

La Mer The Treatment Lotion

Then I move on to Oumere’s eye serum since the skin around my eyes gets so dry. To help it absorb, I use Trees and Flower’s Roll It Away Eye Massage over it. It’s a metal ball applicator that massages essential oils in your skin. It’s so refreshing; it’s like a nice little kiss for your eyeballs.

Trees and Flowers Roll It Away Eye Massage

Then I move on to my favorite facial moisturizing serum, Oumere’s Bioluminelle. It soaks in so quickly; it doesn’t leave you feeling slimy, which I really like. You just have to make sure you shake it really well.

Oumere Serum Bioluminelle

The skin-care devices I swear by

Dr. Dennis Gross’s face steamer, which I thought looked like a really elaborate breast pump! But now I’m obsessed with it. It hydrates your face and opens up your pores, so everything I apply on my face after absorbs better. Also, it just feels like a face hug. I use it every night for about three to five minutes once my face is clean and before I start my regimen. Then I use my Kora Organics Gua Sha Rose Quartz Heart and give my jaw and face a little massage. I always keep it in the fridge, which helps combat puffiness when I apply it to my face.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Pro Facial Steamer

Kora Organics Gua Sha Rose Quartz Heart

The candle that always makes me feel calm

One of my cast mates, Devyn Tyler, bought me a Harlem Candle, and they are the absolute bomb. So, while I’m doing my nighttime skin-care routine, I light my little Harlem Candle and make a little self-love environment. The one I’ve currently got is Love, which has hints of rose and sandalwood.

Harlem Candle Co. Love Candle

My pre-bed beverage

I always drink tea. I have fallen in love with chamomile tea with vanilla and honey. It just feels calming and cuddly.

Twinings of London Camomile, Honey & Vanilla Herbal Tea

The hand cream that’s never messy

Dr. Hauschka’s Rose Nurturing Body Cream. It is my favorite hand cream I’ve ever used. You can use it on your body, but I love using it as a hand cream because it actually absorbs without feeling too slippery. Plus, it smells divine.

Dr. Hauschka Rose Nurturing Body Cream

What’s currently sitting on my nightstand

When I get into bed, I have a daily journal called 365 Science of the Mind: A Year of Daily Wisdom from Ernest Holmes, who I found through a friend. A lot of these teachings are the foundations of AA and any kind of rehabilitation and healing. The wisdom [in this book is] always really aspirational and encouraging.

“365 Science of Mind: A Year of Daily Wisdom” by Ernest Holmes

The PJs I look forward to putting on

I’ve lived in a lot of cold climates, and I found a J.Crew red plaid pajama set that has long sleeves, long pants. It’s just classic, cozy, winter pajamas, and I love plaid.

The robe I cozy up in

I have a purple robe that my brother gave me. It looks like a grandma robe, but I love it. It’s a brand called Peter Alexander, which is really big in Australia, and they’re fantastic. I call it my weekend uniform.

I sleep better at night knowing…

I don’t have to get up early in the morning. If I know I have, like, a 4 a.m. wake-up call, then I find it hard to sleep because I’m anxious about the early wake-up call, which is the worst thing! But when I’m struggling to fall asleep, Louise Hay has a bunch of affirmation quotes and one of them is just “All is well in my world,” so whenever I’m having the anxieties, I repeat that over and over again. That way you create calm in yourself, because whatever it is, you’ll figure it out tomorrow after you’ve had a great night’s sleep. You won’t be able to sleep if you spend all that worrying about it.

How Whitney Cummings Sleeps At Night https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-whitney-cummings-sleeps-at-night.html Wed, 31 Mar 2021 22:03:35 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-whitney-cummings-sleeps-at-night.html [ad_1]

“Sleep is a really big deal for me,” says comedian Whitney Cummings. “We talk about sleep as if it’s only about your sheets and pillows. I did a whole chapter in my book about my sleep routine dealing with childhood trauma and migraines—I would lose sleep thinking ‘Am I going to get a headache tomorrow at this job? What if I get a migraine?’”

Cummings has had problems sleeping since she was a kid—“I was the weirdo that couldn’t fall asleep at sleepovers and then the next day would be sleeping all day covered in like Cheeto dust, Wet n’ Wild and glitter,” she says. It’s no wonder her adult sleep ritual is “an all day thing.” Addressing childhood trauma and addiction helped her create healthier habits, she says. “I’ve learned to really train my brain with routine.”

Getting on the right birth control also helped. “If you don’t have your hormones in check, if you have migraines, then you have sleep problems. I finally got on a birth control that works for me,” says Cummings, who is now a spokesperson for Annovera. “I was on a lot of birth controls that made me kind of like go numb or made me not into sex. So my gyno suggested Annovera as the best option for my migraines.”

All this is to say, Cummings has a lot of pro tips for creating a relaxing nighttime ritual—which also involves a robust skincare routine. “I have oils in every room in my house, and in my car, and in my purse and by my toilet, so in the middle of the night, when I get up to pee, I’ll reapply. I treat my skin like a piece of leather—I’m never not lubed up,” she says. “I’m a female comic—I know what’s in store for me. I love Joan Rivers, she’s my hero, but I don’t want to go that route, so I’m trying to figure out the preventative stuff. And sleep is really the number one beauty secret.”

We asked Cummings about how she sleeps on the road, her favorite pajamas, and her many, many moisturizers.

The first step in my pre-bed routine

I do my nighttime routine in stages. So I’ll use a dermal roller, and then I’ll go answer some emails, and then I’ll put one serum on, and then I’ll go make myself some tea, and then another serum.

Ora Face Microneedle Dermal Roller System

The products I’ll apply in the middle of the night

I’m actually starting to get embarrassed by how many I use—I do grapeseed oil and tomato seed oil that I get at Whole Foods. I love Vintner’s Daughter and the Rodin oil. My new obsession is from a Black-owned brand called Epara.

Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum

Epara

Comforting Body Cream

I also use this brand called Glycelene—Hillary Duff sent this to me. It’s amazing. The packaging is gorgeous and it’s all natural and vegan. Oh! And Bomb’d Aesthetics. It’s a Black-owned business, their products are unbelievable. They have these amazing Shea butters and the smells are so cozy, like smoky pine.

Skin Supplement Luxury Face Oil

Natural Glow Serum Daily Moisturizer

The headphones that block out distractions…and help my skin

I sleep in noise-canceling headphones like a corpse [on my back] so that the products actually sink in. Most people spend all this money on products and then they put their face on their pillow and the pillow gets all the treatments.

Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

The pillow I take everywhere

I have this with me at all times. It’s called a Sleepcrown—it’s like a heavy pillow that is so nice. It’s like a hug for your brain. I also like the Ostrich Pillow.

Ostrichpillow Light Versatile Pillow

The pajamas I splurge on

This is going to sound elitist. They’re Karen Mabon—these are like gifts. But also, I’m the bitch who goes on Etsy and gets vintage housecoats and sweatpants.

Karen Mabon Hot Dog Birthday Party Short Set

What’s currently on my nightstand

Headphones, an eye pillow and like nine oils. People probably think they’re looking at sex toys, walking into a 50 Shades of Gray sex dungeon. I’m like, no it’s not for sex! But I do put oil on my vagina.

How The Sculpt Society Founder Megan Roup Sleeps At Night https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-the-sculpt-society-founder-megan-roup-sleeps-at-night.html Wed, 17 Mar 2021 19:30:00 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-the-sculpt-society-founder-megan-roup-sleeps-at-night.html [ad_1]

As the founder of The Sculpt Society, Megan Roup gets asked about her wellness routine a lot. “I’m always like, ‘well, I really prioritize sleep.’ I don’t understand humans who can operate on five hours of sleep,” she says.

But now that the fitness founder is pregnant with her first child, her sleep routine is already having to be adjusted. “Pre pregnancy, I was a big advocate for CBD [for sleep] and I’ve honestly noticed such a difference with my sleep not being able to have my CBD at night,” Roup says.

We asked Roup how she’s dealing with the pregnancy insomnia, preventing stretch marks and prioritizing those last few months of pre-baby shuteye.

The pregnancy pillow I panic purchased

I’m a big stomach and back sleeper, which has been really difficult for me with pregnancy—in your second and third trimester you’re supposed to be on your side. My quality of sleep during the second trimester hasn’t been great because I’m uncomfortable in that position so I bought one of those cheesy pregnancy pillows off Amazon in a desperate move to try and cure this sleeping habit I’m in and that’s helped.

PharMeDoc Pregnancy Pillow

My pre-bed beverage

Magnesium has been a really big help for me now that I’m pregnant. The Nue Co. has a nice magnesium spray that you can spray on your skin. I also like to drink a magnesium powder drink with hot water two hours before bed.

The Neu Co. Magnesium Ease Spray

My relaxing shower routine

Nécessaire has a beautiful body wash that I like in the shower. Fearless Mama has a really nice sugar scrub, which is great too in the shower.

Nécessaire The Body Wash Sandalwood

My full body skincare essentials

I use the Elemis cleansing balm at night to take off my makeup and I always put a lip balm on—I really like Augustinus Bader.

Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm

Augustinus Bader The Lip Balm

After that my two main things are serum and body oil for my growing bump—I am determined to come out of this without a stretch mark. For serums, I’ve always been a big Estée Lauder fan. I love all of their serums.

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex

Kora Organics has a really, really nice body oil, Summer Fridays just sent me their Babymoon Belly Balm and that’s nice. Fearless Mama has a gorgeous body oil that smells amazing. And then Esker has one I love.

Summer Fridays Babymoon Belly Balm

Fearless MaMa Belly Butter

Esker Beauty Uplifting Belly Oil

The robe I cozy up in

I got my robe from Crate & Barrel. I love a fuzzy, fuzzy robe and they have a good selection.

The PJs I look forward to putting on

I think a good set of pajamas is important—like having something that you look forward to putting on that makes you feel put together and cute. I have a couple of sets from this company called Tommy Johns that are super, super soft and great pajamas.

Tommy John Short Pajama Set

The mattress that upgraded our bedroom

I went through a whole bed situation recently—we went with the avocado mattress, which we’re happy with. It’s organic and clean.

The sheet set I love

We use Brooklinen, which is great. We use their King size down pillows and their sheets as well as their duvet cover and we’ve been really, really happy with that.

What’s currently sitting on my nightstand

I usually have whatever book I’m reading. I just finished City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert. And now I’m reading Bringing Up Bébé, which is actually fantastic. It’s about an American who lives in Paris and she’s talking about how the French bring up their children a little bit differently and it’s enjoyable reading. I also have a water bottle and Seed probiotics—you’re supposed to take it on an empty stomach so I’ll have that next to me, just as a reminder for the morning.

I sleep better at night knowing…

That I have my workout outfit picked out so I’m ready for my morning The Sculpt Society IG live workout.

How Mindy Kaling Sleeps at Night https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-mindy-kaling-sleeps-at-night.html Mon, 22 Feb 2021 21:14:37 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-mindy-kaling-sleeps-at-night.html [ad_1]

Mindy Kaling has figured out a way to get more than 24 hours out of her day. At least that’s how it seems given the actor-producer-writer-director has one of the busiest professional lives on the planet and a three-year-old and a six-month-old at home. Sleep is precious—if not scarce these days. “With my daughter, I obviously went through the whole thing of waking up every three hours to feed her,” Kaling says. “But what they say is true: You completely forget about that when you have another kid. I’m in the midst of that now [with my son].”

The result is that Kaling has gotten intimately familiar with what she calls the “murder zone.” “I’ve decided that the worst time I have to wake up and set the alarm is the one that’s between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.,” Kaling says. “It’s not the midnight to 3 a.m. time, which for whatever reason is fine. That feels like I’m in college—we stayed up late, we’ll go into the diner. But the 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. time is like the murder zone. Nothing good is happening at that time. It is the time when people get murdered. Waking up is like being ripped from the womb of sleep.”

Between the murderous 3 a.m. feedings and the fatigue-inducing effects of the pandemic we’re all coping with, Kaling has developed a new appreciation for rest. “We’re all in this paradoxical thing, which is that we have more time at home, but our sleep is worse because we’re all dealing with more low-level anxiety,” she says. To cope, she’s cutting stressors out of her life, and one way she is doing that is by partnering with myWalgreens to streamline her wellness experience. “I’m really choosy about who I do partnerships with, but honestly, I couldn’t have found one more uniquely suited to my needs,” she says. “I’m loving the pharmacy chat on the app—it’s been really a godsend for me and it’s been helping me mind my health and the health of my kids and give me more of a focus on wellness in an easy way.”

For more easy ways to focus on wellness, we asked Kaling how she gets a good night’s rest—even when she has to wake up during the murder zone.

The pillows that help me sleep…and work

I am one of those people who have about a million pillows on my bed because I do 95% of my writing from bed. Whether I’m writing a screenplay or writing essays or whatever it is, I don’t want to be leaning on the pillow that I sleep on. So I need there to be all these other big buffer pillows, these oversized, overstuffed pillows that I’m leaning on, that don’t mimic my sleep experience at all. I have a Tempur-Pedic pillows I sleep on and then I have like a silky black pillow that looks like a small black cat when it’s laying on my bed, but it’s actually a pillow by Nurse Jamie that I use for beauty. I bring that with me on planes or when I go to the hospital.

The nighttime skin-care product I can’t live without

I have two. One is my Clarisonic brush. If I don’t use it, I feel like I can’t get off every little tiny bit of makeup on my skin.

And the other I use religiously at nighttime is the Joanna Vargas rejuvenating serum, which is this super-hyper-moisturizing serum that goes on underneath moisturizer. I feel like my skin just eats it up the whole night, and in the morning my pores look smaller. I feel like any acne I might’ve had has gone away.

The pajamas that keep me comfy

I wear a lot of Bedhead pajamas. I love their jersey, man. I kinda can’t handle the 100% cotton with no stretch—I need that jersey stretch in my pajamas.

The perfect weighted blanket

I’m just getting into weighted blankets. I have one from Bearaby and I really do like it. If it’s too heavy, I feel like I’m dying in my bed, so it has to be exactly the right amount of weight.

What’s currently on my nightstand

A box of tissues. A picture of my dad with my daughter. A bottle of water. A lamp. And a book called The Lowland.

My secret to looking rested after sleeping on a plane

A truly annoying thing about me is that I can sleep instantly on any plane, any train, any car. I just love motion; I think it really helps me sleep. But I was on a plane once and saw a female celebrity that I know wearing this sheet mask—she looked insane, and I was, like, kind of silently judging her, but then when we got off the eight-hour flight, she looked like exquisite. I was like, “Are you wearing any makeup?” And she was like, “No, I just did my mask.” And so now I take a Joanna Vargas mask with me.

How Javicia Leslie, the First Black Batwoman, Sleeps at Night https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-javicia-leslie-the-first-black-batwoman-sleeps-at-night.html Tue, 09 Feb 2021 20:18:52 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/how-javicia-leslie-the-first-black-batwoman-sleeps-at-night.html [ad_1]

Javicia Leslie, the 33-year-old star of the CW’s Batwoman, is having a busy 2021. Onscreen, she’s stepping into the role (last held by Ruby Rose) of Ryan Wilder, a homeless woman who rises up to fight for justice. In real life she’s breaking barriers as the first Black woman to step into the iconic superhero’s shoes. “I’m really excited for people to see this new Batwoman and to really let their imagination go wild and watch the show,” says Leslie. “I think we really need that right now.”

After all that action—and a crazy shoot schedule—Leslie, who splits her time between L.A. and Vancouver, needs time to decompress. “Sometimes, when I finish work, it takes me a while to settle down and really relax to a point where I can go to sleep,” she says. “If I’m working overnight, which means I’m sleeping during the day, I have blackout shades to really help me rest peacefully.” She also swears by a special set of daylight-blocking glasses given to her by a castmate to help deal with the odd hours. “They help my eyes get adjusted so that by the time it’s time for me to go to sleep, they’re ready,” she says. “I actually wear them until the moment that I go to sleep—I keep them on my eyes even when I’m laying in bed and setting my alarm clock.”

We asked Leslie for the full bedtime routine that gets her to sleep no matter what time of night—or day—she turns in.

The secret weapon that gets my skin really clean

Before bed I kind of go through a process. It’s very important for me to take off my makeup when I get home, so I use Simple makeup remover wipes. Then after I do that, I wash my face with some Dr. Bronner’s unscented soap. I have to keep everything very simple. My skin is super sensitive, and with everything going on with having to wear a mask all the time, I feel like that’s doing the best job of helping me combat any type of bacteria buildup on my skin. My big secret that I feel everyone should know is witch hazel. It really helps to soothe irritated skin, and I think it also helps to block acne that could come from the makeup I have to wear at work and the mask that I’m constantly wearing as well.

The mask that smells so good it lulls me to sleep

I love a nice clean smell—my perfume is literally called Clean. There’s a brand called Laneige, and they have a sleep-care mask called the water sleeping mask and I love it. It’s superlight, and my skin feels protected. I think you need to make sure you’re putting some type of layer protection on your skin when you sleep because a lot of times we’re sleeping on cotton pillowcases and that can cause a lot of buildup.

The essential that protects my hair

I like to wear my hair in a scarf to protect it against the cotton pillowcases. As long as it’s satin and it’s a bonnet, I’m all good.

The duvet I’m obsessed with

I love bedding. I love bamboo sheets or nice Jersey cotton sheets. And then I love linen duvet covers. In my Vancouver place I have this burnt orange duvet cover, and it’s just all of this fluffiness around me. I love the texture. I love the wrinkledness of it. It makes me want to jump in the bed because it always looks kind of like undone, you know? I also decorate my bed with these two bouquets of dried lavender. So when I get into bed, my bed has an essence of lavender.

My nightstand essentials

In my Vancouver place, on one side of the bed, there’s a snake plant and a monstera plant, and then on the other side, on my nightstand, there’s my alarm clock, my cocoa butter chapstick, my journal with my pen, and my copy of The Artist’s Way.

The thing that keeps my dreams sweet

I try not to watch TV before I go to bed because I tend to have very lucid dreams. I try to journal before I go to sleep to leave all of my thoughts that I had from the day on a piece of paper—that way I can go to sleep without any of the heaviness of the day. But I also like to ask myself questions before I go to sleep in my journaling and allow my dreams to answer the questions that I need.

I sleep better at night knowing…

I sleep better at night knowing that my alarm is set. I forgot that last night. And I woke up 45 minutes late today. I was so pissed.

Alicia Silverstone Says This Is Why You Should Stop Eating by 5 P.M. https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/alicia-silverstone-says-this-is-why-you-should-stop-eating-by-5-p-m.html Fri, 18 Dec 2020 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.community-posts.com/lifestyle/alicia-silverstone-says-this-is-why-you-should-stop-eating-by-5-p-m.html [ad_1]

After nearly 30 years in Hollywood, Alicia Silverstone has finally accepted the inevitable: Getting up for 4 a.m. call times will never get easier. “There’s no good way I can get to sleep early enough to get up at that time and have that feel good,” she says from her home in Los Angeles. “It just doesn’t feel right. Who doesn’t like sleeping?!”

It’s because of her crazy schedule that sleep is such a sacred part of the 44-year-old’s self-care routine. “Sleep used to be a problem for me before I was vegan, but now it’s not,” she says. “I think when you eat well, when your body feels good, and your life is in order, sleeping isn’t complicated. For me, diet is everything.”

That should come as no surprise for anyone who’s followed the actor and producer since she became a household name in the mid ’90s. She cultivated her passion for the environment into an eco-friendly, healthy-living brand, starting with her 2009 best-selling book, The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet. From there, she launched The Kind Life website, aimed at diving deeper into the world of healthy, eco-friendly living. And she also wrote a second book following the birth of her son, Bear—now nine—titled The Kind Mama: A Simple Guide to Supercharged Fertility, a Radiant Pregnancy, a Sweeter Birth, and a Healthier, More Beautiful Beginning.

As if that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Silverstone’s been in demand more than ever on the acting front. She stars in the hit Netflix Y.A. series The Baby-Sitters Club and has a new movie, Sister of the Groom, about a destination wedding weekend gone off the rails. (She also executive-produces the film, which is out on digital and on demand Friday, December 18.)

“I thought the character of Audrey would be so fun to play,” she says. “I really enjoyed that she’s unraveling. She doesn’t feel that great in her skin, she hasn’t been sleeping with her husband, and she’s unsatisfied with life.”

IRL, Silverstone is almost preternaturally chill. In our latest installment of Bedtime Stories, she fills us in on the sleep mask, cozy tea, and 4:30 p.m. dinnertime that get her there.

My nighttime goals

I have to pop the dogs outside to make sure they go to the bathroom. Then my son and I brush our teeth together. We’ve been flossing, which is very monumental! And we snuggle together. And then usually I try to catch up on things for the next day. In a fantasy planet, I turn everything off by 9 p.m. That’s the goal, so I’m not touching the computer or looking at anything. That way I just can just be quiet or read or snuggle.

The 900-page book I love to read

There was one time when I read Gregory David Roberts’s Shantaram, and that was like the greatest gift. To get to read this 900-page book, I felt like I was getting away with murder. But now I had to put all the books away from my room because they were taunting me. [Laughs.] I’m working back-to-back movies, so there’s not time for that right now.

The reason I eat dinner super early

My body’s hungry at the same time every day, so I really try to make a routine out of that. I’m pretty hungry for dinner around 4:30 p.m., which is ridiculous, but it’s true. So I usually eat somewhere between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m., and then I don’t eat again because I’m fully satisfied.

What I eat for an amazing night’s sleep

My sleep changed so drastically when I changed my diet. When you get great sleep, you just feel so good. When you’re eating foods that aren’t helping your body—which most of us eat all the time—then your body’s never resting. It just spends all night processing junk, and going, “Ahhh!” It’s like trauma for the body. If I eat chocolate that day, I’m not gonna sleep well.

The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet

The most soothing nighttime beverage

If I want to have something really soothing at night, I’ll have my golden milk tea. I use MyKind Organics to make it, and it’s like having a treat because it’s turmeric, so it’s good for inflammation and boosting your immune system. Plus, it just feels cozy, so that’s a nice nighttime thing.

MyKind Organics Golden Milk Powder

Where I buy thrifted bedding and clothes

I like buying certified organic or used. There’s too much clothes in the world, so I really try to not buy new things, and if I buy new things, I’m buying organic materials or eco-friendly materials. I like The Real Real or Crossroads. The Real Real is expensive, but I find such beautiful things on there that I use forever. And then you’re just giving something another life, which I feel so good about.

My bath-time staples

I love to take a bath. I don’t do it every night, but it feels good to get in hot water and put lavender oil or other essential oils in there.

The sleep mask that works like a charm

I used to be so freaked out by a sleep mask. I hated it for most of my life, but I just finally had to. I was working nights and I had to sleep in the daytime, so I got a mask and I love it. It’s called Sleep Master and it’s big and soft and my dog tries to chew on it a lot.

My go-to nighttime skin-care routine

I really like Body Deli’s melon cleanser. It’s organic and pretty. And I like their blueberry fusion scrub. I have two favorite serums: One is by Garden Apothecary, and the other is called The Everything Oil. That one takes a minute to get used to because when you first try it, it smells awful. They told me I was going to hate the smell, and I did. I hated it. But after I got past it—like two weeks later—I fell in love with it.

But I actually don’t believe that products do things to your skin—your diet does something to your skin. So, if I want my skin to look good, I eat well. Period. End of story. Eat well, sleep well, all your problems are solved.
