Nicole Kidman Called Out a Reporter for Asking ‘Sexist’ Question About Ex-Husband Tom Cruise

In an interview discussing her latest film Being the Ricardos, Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman called out the journalist conducting the interview for a question about ex-husband Tom Cruise that she considered “sexist.” 

During the interview with The Guardian, published on December 26, Kidman was appalled when the journalist addressed her marriage to Cruise in response to her comments about the marriage between Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in Aaron Sorkin’s film, which is streaming now on Amazon.

“It’s about a creative and romantic relationship that doesn’t work out,” Kidman told The Gaurdian about the film, which chronicles the complicated marriage between the two television stars who ended their 20-year marriage in 1960. “But from it come some extraordinary things. And I love that. I love that it’s not a happy ending. This film says you can make an extraordinary relationship thrive and leave remnants of it that exist forever. Yeah, that’s really gorgeous. You can’t make people behave how you want them to, and sometimes you’re going to fall in love with someone who isn’t going to be the person you spend the rest of your life with.”

In response, the journalist asked if she was also speaking of her marriage to Tom Cruise. Kidman and Cruise met on the set of Days of Thunder and got married in late 1990. They adopted two children together and in 2001, the couple split.  Kidman has been married to country singer Keith Urban since 2006. 

“Oh, my God, no, no. Absolutely not. No,” Nicole Kidman replied. “I mean, that’s, honestly, so long ago that that isn’t in this equation. So no. And I would ask not to be pigeonholed that way, either. It feels to me almost sexist because I’m not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, ‘Give me my life. In its own right.’”
