Malia Obama Reportedly Joins Writing Staff for Donald Glover’s Rumored Beyoncé-Inspired Show

Malia Obama is reportedly leveling up. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter the Harvard grad is joining the writing staff of Donald Glover’s rumored new Amazon show about a Beyoncé-like figure. Per THR, the show is part of the eight-figure deal Glover just signed with Amazon after exiting his arrangement with FX. 

This isn’t the first time Obama has shown interest in working in the entertainment industry. She interned on HBO’s comedy, Girls, and worked as a production assistant on the CBS drama, Extant.

“She’s an angel,” Girls creator Lena Dunham said of Obama in 2017. The award-winning series ran from 2012 to 2017, and Obama was on staff on 2015. “She was interested and she was interning at HBO and they thought, you know, what if she comes a couple of days a week to the set of Girls. She loved the show. Obviously, we weren’t making her go get our coffee, but she wanted to do all the jobs, that was the cool thing. She was totally enthusiastic.” 

Girls co-showrunner Jenni Koner added, “She’s such a delight. You cannot believe how poised and incredible she is,” They explained that Obama’s role on the set was similar to that of a writer’s assistant. So, joining this Amazon show—reportedly called Hive—would be a natural progression.

Working at Amazon would be a huge level-up for Donald Glover, too. Per THR, the Atlanta creator and Community alum is leaving FX to develop and star in shows for the streaming service. His brother and writing/producing partner, Stephen Glover, is also joining him at Amazon. THR reports the pact is believed to include a content channel that will spotlight Glover’s work and other curated content on Amazon Prime Video’s hub.
