Justin Timberlake Voices Support for Britney Spears Following Her Conservatorship Testimony

Justin Timberlake is publicly defending Britney Spears following her June 23 conservatorship hearing, in which she asked a judge to end the legal arrangement she’s been in since 2008. (Under her conservatorship, Spears has no control over her life and finances.)

Timberlake, Spears’ ex-boyfriend, took to Twitter to voice his support following the hearing.

“After what we saw today, we should all be supporting Britney at this time,” Timberlake tweeted. “Regardless of our past, good and bad, and no matter how long ago it was… what’s happening to her is just not right. No woman should ever be restricted from making decisions about her own body.”

He continued, “No one should EVER be held against their will… or ever have to ask permission to access everything they’ve worked so hard for. Jess [Jessica Biel] and I send our love, and our absolute support to Britney during this time. We hope the courts, and her family make this right and let her live however she wants to live.”

It’s worth noting Justin Timberlake faced backlash in February after the documentary Framing Britney shed light on his role in the slut-shaming Spears endured after their 2002 breakup. He ultimately apologized, but some fans dismissed his words as insincere. And they’re doing the same thing with these new tweets.

“The fact that it took you this long to say anything when Britney literally made your career? Performance activism at its finest,” one person tweeted

Other celebrities have voiced their support for Spears, as well. Halsey tweeted, “Bless Britney, and I hope with my whole heart she is awarded freedom from this abusive system. She deserves it more than anything. I admire her courage speaking up for herself today.”

Mariah Carey wrote, “We love you Britney!!! Stay strong.”

Other stars referenced the #FreeBritney movement, which is an effort started by Spears’ fans to end her conservatorship. Brandy tweeted, “Sending all my love and support to Britney Spears and her fans,” before adding, “#FreeBritney.”

Bebe Rexha echoed a similar sentiment: “Free Britney!!!!”
