Putin has held ambitions to bring Ukraine back into Russia’s sphere of influence since his early political career, regularly citing his belief that they have always been a single nation and that during the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine was corrupted by Western powers and turned against its historic allies. (Recent polls indicate that a majority of Ukrainians favor a transatlantic military alliance with the West.) For Putin, the reasons for invading seem to be as much for a sense of sentimental national pride and historical revisionism as they are for any tangible benefits that might be achieved by gaining access to Ukraine’s resources as a country.

What will happen next?

While many are reluctant to predict the next steps in the crisis for fear of catastrophizing around what is already a tragedy, it is likely that the conflict will escalate. Today’s attacks made it clear that Putin’s intentions are not simply to annex the contested border regions, but to target Ukraine as a whole. Some are predicting that his primary objective is to overthrow the current leadership and install a “puppet regime” in its place that is sympathetic to Russian interests.

It is not likely, however, that the West will engage in physical armed conflict, but there is every possibility the conflict could usher in a new era of cyber warfare. A wide range of economic sanctions are also expected to be put in place by G7 member states and their allies, after senior politicians from around the globe coordinate their plans throughout the rest of today. These may extend as far as to impact Putin’s personal wealth and those of his closest associates, many of whom have major assets and investments in countries such as the U.S. and U.K. who are firmly opposed to Russia’s intervention. Whether these diplomatic efforts will help to deescalate the crisis in any way remains to be seen.

How can we help?

Already, major protests and demonstrations in support of the Ukrainian’s right to independence have begun taking place outside of Russian embassies in major cities across the globe, with more expected to follow this coming weekend. In terms of providing concrete support for displaced or vulnerable communities on the ground in Ukraine, however, a number of NGOs and organizations are already actively working to provide food, shelter, and medical supplies for civilians affected by the crisis.

A helpful minisite has been put together by the independent Ukrainian English-language digital news site, The Kyiv Independent. The outlet has gathered together a number of resources to learn more about the crisis as well as a selection of verified charities seeking donations, including Voices of Children, who work with children affected by the war in eastern Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Ukraine Crisis Media Center has a number of alternative means of supporting the country’s efforts to resist invasion, including supporting boycotts, joining local rallies, and reaching out to your political representatives.

I skipped prom to race in a track meet during my junior year of high school. Yes, I chose to run around in circles over getting dressed up and spending time with my friends at the biggest social event of the year. My reason? I didn’t want to “deal with” my hair.

I was one of the few Black girls at my all-girls boarding school in semi-rural Connecticut. I grew up in Brooklyn, where Black hair salons are usually a stone’s throw away and the pressure of existing in a wealthy, white space was much less crushing. So for those four years away from home, I had to balance discovering my Blackness and doing my own hair for the first time, all while being relatively new to running.

I didn’t know how to use a good wide-toothed comb and seldom had easy access to no-lye relaxer. And I definitely did not have time for regular deep-conditioning treatments amidst classmates telling me my hair “felt like worms” (yes, I told them they couldn’t touch my hair; they did so anyway). Since then, I’ve found luck with a hair care brand called Aphogee to reduce damage from too-tight ponytails and general dryness.

I was also the only Black person on the girls’ cross country team and stuck out like a sore thumb among my white teammates; I won almost every race by a landslide. Most people don’t expect an American Black girl to be a cross country runner, and especially not finishing in first place for an elite school. People stared at me before and after each meet, which made me self-conscious and deeply uncomfortable. To say that I struggled to take care of my hair, particularly in this environment, would be a monumental understatement. All my success and accomplishments just made me feel smaller. I felt like I wasn’t supposed to like running, let alone be good at it.

My teammates were as accepting as most non-Black girls can be: kind, but unaware of their privilege. One girl asked me how my summer training went after she detailed running in Nantucket under the supervision of a personal coach. Another would let me borrow running clothes if I forgot to do laundry because she had such a surplus of Lululemon. It was very clear to me that the girls never understood how our school was built for students like them; Rockefeller and Bush family members were alumni. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s muse, who inspired Bocoran Slot Gacor Hari Ini Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, matriculated in 1914. And almost 100 years later I, a young Black girl, graduated from the very same school.

Black hair is as stigmatized by non-Black society as it is prized by those who wear it, and the fitness and wellness space is no exception. According to a study by Perception Institute, 1 in 3 Black women cite their hair as the reason they have avoided exercise in the past, compared to 1 in 10 white women. It comes as no surprise that the adult running community is overwhelmingly non-Black.

Dry shampoo and a Dyson Airwrap does not work for most Black folks after a 6-mile jog through the park. Even if those were viable solutions for post-run haircare, many Black runners cannot afford to spend time and money fixing styles that cost time and money in the first place. I’ve been to most boutique fitness studios at this point: SoulCycle, Rumble, SLT, Y7, you name it. And not once at any of these studios, including gyms like Equinox that have a wider variety of fitness options, have I seen products for Black hair in the locker room. I avoid using the shampoo at all these places, because their products leave my hair feeling brittle. Like my boarding school, these fitness options are not built for me either.

Have yourself a LOL at Hollywood’s latest confusing casting decision: Emmy Rossum as Tom Holland’s mom.

I’ll save you a google: Holland is 25, and Rossum is 35. Not as bad as Angelina Jolie playing Colin Farrell’s mother in 2004’s Alexander (Jolie is literally one year older than Farrell)—but still, goofy.

This pairing is for the first season of an upcoming Apple anthology series called The Crowded Room. The Hollywood Reporter explains their characters thusly: “Holland…is starring as a man named Danny Sullivan; Rossum will play Sullivan’s mother, who is always looking for a man to fulfill her dreams of salvation.” Amanda Seyfried plays a clinical psychologist.

Let’s be generous. Maybe there’s a time jump! Maybe part of the series takes place when Rossum’s character is in her 30s, and they cast her with those scenes in mind. Maybe other scenes take place when Holland’s character is in his 20s, and he took the role with those scenes in mind, and when they share the screen one of them will wear makeup or use CGI or just act really hard to sell us on the idea that they are more than 10 years apart (à la Sally Field and Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump). At least one Twitter user seems to agree with this theory:

The book that the series is partially based on, The Minds of Billy Milligan, is a nonfiction account of a man acquitted of a crime by claiming to have multiple personalities. We’ll have to wait and see how that unfolds.

In the meantime, great to know this Hollywood trend is alive and well. Speaking of Tom Holland, remember in Spider-Man when his (admittedly, hot version of) Aunt May was Marisa Tomei, while his superhero mentor was Robert Downey, Jr.? Tomei is one year older than RDJ. Something to think about!

Bella Hadid has shared her mental health struggles and various avant-garde looks freely via Instagram and in interviews, but one thing she’s kept private is her relationship status. For over a year, the model has reportedly been quietly dating art director Marc Kalman. And though she has posted pictures of him to her Instagram Stories before, there’s never been anything officially on the record.

But a picture is worth a thousand words, and the pair were papped looking every bit the serious couple at Milan Fashion Week. They’re even wearing basically the same pair of shoes.

So who is Marc Kalman, anyway? First of all, he either doesn’t have an Instagram or doesn’t use his name on it, I already checked. The good folks over at Elle found his finsta back in July, but he either deleted or changed it since, probably because it showed up in that article. The same article reports that Kalman has worked with brands and artists including Travis Scott, boyfriend/baby daddy to Kylie Jenner, sister of Kendall Jenner, who often walks runways with Bella Hadid and her sister Gigi. So there’s a connection.

According to his website, he was previously a fashion assistant at The New York Times and its style publication T Magazine. So he’s wearing a vest over a hoodie for fashion reasons, not weirdo reasons, okay? Okay.

While in Milan, Hadid also walked the runway at the Fendi show, proving that tiny sunglasses and “wet look” hair are perfect for any occasion.

Natalie Lee and Shayne Jansen are arguably the most dramatic couple from the second season of Netflix’s addictive reality dating series Love Is Blind, which has contestants get to know each other from “pods” without seeing each other or meeting in person. Couples get engaged, meet IRL, and then try to make it while working the city they live in together. The hope is that, by the end, they’ll get married.  

But Natalie and Shayne’s engagement had a challenger in Shaina Hurley, who tried to win over Shayne before he proposed to Natalie. And once the couple tried to live their lives normally in Chicago, this triangle has created some drama and tension. 

It seems there was even more drama that we’ll never see, because someone else proposed to Nicole before Shayne did. According to a new interview, those scenes were cut from the show.

In an interview with Metro UK, Love Is Blind creator Chris Coelen said, “There was another guy who—very, very early on—was really interested in Natalie and basically proposed to her. It was very out of the blue, but he just felt like he knew, and she was like, ‘This is just weird,’” Coelen said. “She didn’t have any deep feelings for him, but he had developed very significant feelings for her. Anyway, she said no and he left, and that was that.”

According to Coelen, who did not mention who proposed to Natalie, the proposal was cut due to length and because the proposal was not significant to Natalie’s storyline because it wasn’t important to Natalie. “Again, you only have so much bandwidth within a show, and I think it’s a fascinating story, but because we’re focused on more of her story…I think for her it was less significant,” he said. “It was like, ‘Why is this guy doing this?’ versus ‘Oh, my God, I really have serious feelings for him.’ He had serious feelings for her; she was like, ‘No, I’m not interested in this guy.’ To tell that story properly would have taken up a lot of time that we didn’t have.”

Of course, that wasn’t the only proposal we didn’t see on screen. Maybe Netflix will air an episode with all the outtakes??? Here’s hoping.

Big hair—and velcro hair rollers, more specifically—is having a moment. One scroll through TikTok and Instagram and you’ll see everyone from influencers to celebrity stylists flaunting voluminous blowouts. Blame it on the ‘90s fever that’s completely dominated beauty trends the past year (blue eye shadow and scrunchies, anyone?), but bouncy, polished hair now reigns supreme in a beauty world once owned by messy beach waves. 

Celebrity hairstylist Priscilla Valles—who styles the hair of Kim Kardashian, Hailey Bieber, and Dua Lipa and has her own extensions line with Glam Seamless—has noticed an uptick in clients asking for volume and is embracing the revival. “I’ve been encouraging [the look] a lot too,” she tells Glamour. “Not everybody wants that styled, curled look. I feel like I talk about [velcro hair rollers] in every interview. We’re bringing them back. I love that look. It’s soft ’90s glam.” 

Of course, not all of us can afford to get blowouts on the regular or shell out the cash for a Dyson Airwrap, but velcro hair rollers can achieve the exact same look at a fraction of the price. They’re also accessible—you can easily pick them up at the drugstore or Sephora. The only problem? If you aren’t experienced with velcro rollers, they can be pretty intimidating. As someone who has leaned into the blowout trend, I got my own set of velcro rollers hoping to recreate the bouncy magic. They’ve been sitting in my closet collecting dust ever since. 

But Valles assures us that using it isn’t as scary or difficult as it seems. Her only warning? Make sure the rollers aren’t too small. “You really want to have that natural look,” she says. “If you think of the little ladies with their roller sets, they are so small. They have so many of them. You want the opposite of that.”

Ahead, Valles breaks down how to use velcro hair rollers, along with her best tips for achieving bouncy beautiful hair. 

Start at the top of your head.

It turns out, sectioning your hair is pretty easy. Valles recommends starting at the top of your head and working your way down. “I always like to start with on top because I want that to get the most heat and sit the longest, because it’s usually where you want most of the volume,” she says. You don’t have to be exact with the sectioning, just make sure the sections have a good chunk of hair (more on that later). “We’re going to do big sections here, because we’re not trying to have a really curly look.” 

Go big or go home. 

Valles recommends using the biggest rollers in your set for the back of the head and one size down for the sides. “These are three inch, two inch, three inch,” she says. “I go for the biggest ones, just because I really just want the volume at the root with a little bend on the ends. Obviously the tighter you go, the tighter the curl is. But I don’t really want a curl.” 

Prep the hair.

If you are working with damp hair, use a volumizing mouse or spray to get that extra oomf. Apply the product to the roots and run through the ends. Make sure the hair isn’t too damp—it should be 90 percent dry.
